Domains has moved from the Online store page to the Settings page in your Shopify admin. To access your domain settings for your online store, go to Settings> Domains.

If you have a Shopify-managed domain, then you can access and edit your DNS settings from the Domains page in your Shopify admin. If your store uses a myshopify.com URL, then you need to add a custom domain before you can access your DNS settings. You might need to edit your DNS settings if you’re doing the following tasks:

  • setting up a third-party email service on your domain
  • verifying your domain with a third-party service
  • pointing a subdomain to another website

You can access and edit the following DNS records:

  • A record
  • AAAA record
  • SRV record

When you buy your domain through Shopify or transfer a third-party domain to Shopify, the A record and CNAME record for your domain are automatically set to the default DNS records for Shopify. You can have multiple CNAME records associated with your domain, but each one must have a unique name, such as www or shop. If you want to add MX, TXT, SRV, or AAAA records, then you need to edit the DNS settings for your domain.

Changes to your DNS settings can take up to 24 hours to take effect.

    • Downtime – The websites and email hosted on this account will be down while the system changes your primary domain, which can take anywhere from a few minutes to an hour.
    • Backups – Your usernames, passwords, files, databases, etc., will not be changed however, we highly recommend that you download a complete backup of your website files and databases to your home computer as a fail-safe against possible file corruption.

    • Custom Configurations – Any subdomains, custom DNS settings, and email forwarders on the old and new primary domains will be deleted during this process, and it is your responsibility to set those up again when the change is complete.

Should You Change Your Domain Name

The reasons for getting a new web address are often quite trivial for example, it can be that the website operator simply doesnt like their current web address , or perhaps the website has changed direction and the name is no longer relevant. In cases like these, the domain name simply doesnt fit with the websites content.

However, domain changes can also be caused by a new brand or firm name, which should be reflected in its web address, or from purchasing a more SEO-friendly domain, which promises to draw in a higher number of visitors to the site. In addition, many of the new top-level domains are able to provide web addresses with a more geographical, thematic, or industry-specific domain. Website operators using an old top-level domain who wish to take advantage of this opportunity also need to register a domain change.

Redirect An Old WordPress Domain Permanently

The final step when changing the WordPress domain is to create a 301 redirect a URL redirection from your old domain to the new one. The redirect will carry over page ranking values, ensuring that your SEO efforts wont be lost when moving to a new domain.

We recommend keeping your old domain active for a while. This will allow users not aware of the domain change to reach the site and help notify search engines about the redirection.

Lets dive into the hPanel to edit the .htaccess file and create a 301 redirect:

  • Go to hPanel-> Files -> File Manager.
  • Select your old domain and click Go to File Manager.
  • Find the .htaccess file in the public_html directory.
  • Right-click and choose Edit.
  • Replace http://yoursitename.com with your new domain, and insert the following code.
  • #Options +FollowSymLinksRewriteEngine onRewriteRule ^$ http://yoursitename.com/$1
  • Press Save & Close.
  • Similar to modifying wp-config.php, you can complete this step with an FTP client.

    Rebrand Your Websites Design

Depending on your choice of domain, youll likely need to update aspects of your sites design to reflect it. For example, your logo will likely need an update, but the same goes for any other element that alludes to your former domain name. For example:

    • Your About page if your site has one.
    • Your websites footer, which often includes copyright information.
    • The tagline of your site, which is the text that appears on a browsers tab when you open it.
    • Any miscellaneous references within your content.

Fortunately, making these changes is relatively straightforward, although youll need to make sure youve removed all references to your previous domain on your site before pressing ahead.

Youll also need to let visitors know about these changes so they arent left scratching their heads. Well talk about that shortly, but before that, lets talk about redirects.
