Godaddy Stole My Domain

Michael CygerJune 14, 2012 | Updated: December 9, 201560
Does this sound like a familiar situation for you?
You:
Then, of course, you think: GoDaddy stole my domain name!
How could it not be GoDaddy?
GoDaddy saw that you did the domain name availability search, the domain name is obviously brilliant, so they registered it and who knows what they plan to do with it.
But did GoDaddy really steal your domain name?
I received the following email from a reader recently:
I searched at GoDaddy a domain name and it was available, but I didnt register it. A few days later I decided to build a website using that domain and found that GoDaddy registered it 2 days after my search and parked it in a phony web site saying buy this domain.
Its heart breaking but a good lesson learned.
Why isnt this illegal for GoDaddy to offer a domain search and then buy the ones people dont register, like you write at ?
Shouldnt they have a warning, if you dont register the domain we may register and sell the domain name you type into our search? Its almost like theyre stealing my intellectual rights.
Obviously Im new to all this but this is really questionable business practices.
Thanks for this article,
So, did GoDaddy really steal this domain name?
You bet it is.

Are Dns And Nameserver The Same
The DNS stands for Domain Name System or Domain Naming System, Domain Name Service depending upon whom you talk to. It is a global system that translates the IP addresses to human-readable domain names.
On the other hand, a nameserver is used to locate the DNS server. A nameserver is the address of the DNS server that hosts the records for that domain.

Whatsmydns.net
Whatsmydns.net is a great DNS propagation checker you can use to find where record changes have propagated around the world. All you have to do is enter your domain name, and then select the record you want to check.
Dig from GSuite Toolbox
Google has its own set of tools you can use to check DNS and diagnose common issues. Just enter the domain youre diagnosing, and then select the record you want to check. Unlike Whatsmydns.net, however, Googles tool will not show how records have propagated.

How To Find A Domain With Godaddy
Picking the perfect domain name is a crucial step of your online adventure. If you have an idea to get online or a great name for your website, we recommend registering the domain immediately before anyone else does. Your domain will be used for your website and email, and establishes your online identity. A great domain can also increase branding, marketing and communication opportunities.
Search for your domain on GoDaddy’s homepage in the domain search field. When you find the domain you want and it’s available to register, add it to the cart and complete checkout.
Some domain names may come back with a price higher than expected. These domains are known as premium domains, and they are considered valuable domain real estate. Premium domains might be more expensive, but the benefits often make up for the initial cost investment.
If the domain you requested is already registered, we provide available alternative spelling and extensions. For example, you might be able to select a .info or .net extension, rather than .com. Or you can review domains with extensions unique to your idea, such as .studio or .design.
We also offer Domain Broker Service as an option to attempt acquiring a domain that is already registered on your behalf. After purchasing the service, our dedicated broker agents will take every reasonable step to attempt to secure the domain on your behalf.
Optional: Configure Cname Record For Www
We recommend you also set a CNAME record in your zone file to allow use of the www prefix. A CNAME points a subdomain to another domain name.
For example, with a CNAME in place, visitors entering www.thisfinedomain.com in their browser will be re-routed to thisfinedomain.com. Without a CNAME record, visitors will instead reach an error page.
Step 1: Click Add under the Records table.
Step 2: Under Type, select CNAME.
Step 3: Enter www under Host.
Step 4: Enter under Points to.
Step 5: Click Save to apply the changes.
