This tutorial is for XAMPP 1.7.3 running under Windows XP with Service Pack 3. It may be similar for other version combinations, but no guarantee is made.

UPDATE 17-March-2012:If you are running Windows 7 the default security settings prevent you from running applications with administrative privileges. This means that you wont be able to save changes made to the hosts file.

Installing XAMPP allows you to develop, test, and play around with web server code on your local machine. You can configure and test out your website locally, instead of live somewhere on the web.

It does have the drawback that to access your website you have to type localhost/my-web-site, where my-web-site is actually the directory you installed your website in.

You can setup the Apache Server in XAMPP to serve up web pages as though they were actually located on instead of localhost.

This is a two step process: first, you have to redirect the web site name to your computer next, you get Apache to redirect the web site address to your installed directory.

Quoted Strings Let You Break The Rules

Quoting is magic. You can do all sorts of thingsthat you aren’t allowed normally when you quotestrings. Which first of all makes it worth notingthat you can have quoted strings in the localpart.

So You Have A Local Domain Now What

Lets start here: Its not your fault. No, really. You were unfortunately misdirected for a number of years and now youre stuck with a .local domain.

This has been fine and dandy for a number of years, but is no longer the case. Maybe a brief recap would be helpful:

When Active Directory first became a thing 15 years ago, there was not great direction for how to properly name your fully qualified domain name , so many people just chose < domain> .local for their Active Directory. Even today many active Microsoft KB Articles have directions to use a non-public TLD today. The primary reason that the .local even became a thing was to easily administrate and separate public and private namespaces. In separating your private namespace to a .local, there was a clean break between private and public DNS zones. DNS split brain is possible, but in early days you have to be exceptionally careful with DNS entries and change control.

Using A Generic Domain Name

It has been suggested, for organisations that are subject to a lot of mergers and acquisitions, using a generic domain name such as “corp.local” might be a valid option. Since domain renaming and migration is often a difficult and costly operation, there may be some validity to this, but there is no guarantee that the selected domain name might not be chosen by another admin thinking along the same lines as yourself. This would make a domain merger much more difficult. In addition, while the generic name can be hidden from the users by use of custom UPN suffixes and DNS search suffixes, an old domain name with guaranteed uniqueness could also be hidden in the same fashion.

The Domain Name Does Not Need To Resolve

Ok, so let’s leave the local part andlet’s take a look at the domain component.As mentioned above, this follows the normal DNS rules,which means it should be easy to validate, right? Imean, at least it’s case-insensitive, but… how goodare you at validatinghostnames, anyway?

For starters, who says that the domain name has toactually resolve via the DNS? Any string followingthe rules for domain names is valid here, so you couldhave an address that goes to a domain that doesn’tresolve right now, but that will resolve when somebodyregisters the domain.

But you can also use special domains, such as e.g.,the .onion domain, and then even configureyour mail server to send mail as a hidden service,which then makes the following a perfectly reasonableemail address:

When you type a web site name into the URL field , your browser sends the name to a Domain Name Server that looks up the text name and returns the Internet Protocol address for it . Your browser then connects to IP address

Before your browser queries the Domain Name Server, it first checks a file called hosts on your computer. If the requested web site name is found, it uses the IP address found in the file.

1) Locate your hosts file. In Windows XP, this file is located in C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc:

2) Open the file with a plain text editor . Using a word processor, like Word, can mess up the file when you save it.

It is very likely that the file is empty, except for the default comment and examples :

3) Add lines containing the domain name and IP address to redirect to. See the section in the red box in the image above.

  • Each line must begin with the address

  • After the IP address, type the name of the domain you wish to redirect to this address. You may only enter 1 name per line.

  • Addresses like and are different and each need a separate line.

Your address does need to be a valid top level domain . It just needs to be composed of letters , numbers , hyphens and periods . In the examples above, I used .15, .16, and .17 as the top level domain .

4) Save the changes.

5) Restart your browser .

A surprise to our beliefs when we use the same Account and password and try to join the domain manually it was successful and it worked. Other logs such as Setuperr are not created and we have the above error only documented multiple times as a final error too.

If someone faced this issue kindly reply so your’s experience and expertise could prove to be helpful for me to fix this issue.


Why Mycompanylocal Is A Bad Idea

One of the most common methods to name your internal domain is to name it something like mycompany.local. This is very common when you are naming a domain for a small business that does not plan to publish any servers on the Internet. However, this can be a very bad idea for the following reasons.

What if the need arise to publish something on the Internet? So far, the Top Level Domain .local is not available for registration on the Internet and hence you cannot register any URL that ends with the .local for public access. In this case, you will have to publish the resource with a different name and this will sure confuse your users as they will have to remember that their website is called something else when outside the office than when they are inside it!! This will also means that they cannot save it in any script or bookmark on their laptops.

And what if the TLD .local became available on the Internet, and somebody bought the name mycompany.local? This is highly unlikely to happen and there is currently a suggestion to prevent this from ever happening from the IETF: Reserved Top Level Domain Name. However if .local became available on the Internet and somebody obtained yours before you did, it will be an issue as soon as your internal users try to check www.mycompany.local of that company to see what they sell. Your internal DNS will point them to your internal www server and they would never be able to see that site.

Host List Patterns That Match By Ip Address

If an IPv4 host calls an IPv6 host and the call is accepted on an IPv6 socket,the incoming address actually appears in the IPv6 host as::ffff:< v4address> . When such an address is tested against a hostlist, it is converted into a traditional IPv4 address first.

An Lsearch File Is Not An Out

As will be described in the sections that follow, lookups can be used in liststo provide indexed methods of checking list membership. There has been someconfusion about the way lsearch lookups work in lists. Becausean lsearch file contains plain text and is scanned sequentially, it issometimes thought that it is allowed to contain wild cards and other kinds ofnon-constant pattern. This is not the case. The keys in an lsearch file arealways fixed strings, just as for any other single-key lookup type.

If you want to use a file to contain wild-card patterns that form part of alist, just give the filename on its own, without a search type, as describedin the previous section. You could also use the wildlsearch ornwildlsearch, but there is no advantage in doing this.

Using The External Domain Name

Another common method to name your internal domain is to name it like your external domain. This can work, but you will need to have and mange two different sets of DNS servers:

  • internal — contains records for the internal servers mapped to internal addresses
  • external — mapped to public addresses
  • For example when users on the Internet try to access your website, the external DNS name will resolve that to an IP on the public Internet. However, your internal DNS servers will not forward the request to external DNS servers as they are authoritative for the zone and hence assume that if they do not know about the server www, then it must not exist. This can be solved by adding a record to the internal DNS telling it where the www server is on the Internet. The same applies to each resource that you publish on the Internet.

    As you may clearly see, this can become a management hassle and cause errors, as it is not uncommon to forget changing the internal record when changing the external one or vice-versa.

    Note that you may not be using your own servers to host the external DNS zone. Your ISP may do this for your or the hosting service that hosts your website. This complicates things even more as the hosting service may change the IP address of your website without even telling you.

    Negated Items In Lists

    Items in a list may be positive or negative. Negative items are indicated by aleading exclamation mark, which may be followed by optional white space. A listdefines a set of items . When Exim processes one of these lists,it is trying to find out whether a domain, host, address, or local part is in the set that is defined by the list. It works like this:

    The list is scanned from left to right. If a positive item is matched, thesubject that is being checked is in the set if a negative item is matched, thesubject is not in the set. If the end of the list is reached without thesubject having matched any of the patterns, it is in the set if the last itemwas a negative one, but not if it was a positive one. For example, the list in

    domainlist relay_to_domains = !a.b.c : *.b.c

    matches any domain ending in .b.c except for a.b.c. Domains that matchneither a.b.c nor *.b.c do not match, because the last item in thelist is positive. However, if the setting were

    domainlist relay_to_domains = !a.b.c

    then all domains other than a.b.c would match because the last item in thelist is negative. In other words, a list that ends with a negative item behavesas if it had an extra item :* on the end.

    Another way of thinking about positive and negative items in lists is to readthe connector as or after a positive item and as and after a negativeitem.

    Case Of Letters In Address Lists

    Domains in email addresses are always handled caselessly, but for local partscase may be significant on some systems . However, RFC 2505 suggests that matching of addresses toblocking lists should be done in a case-independent manner. Since most addresslists in Exim are used for this kind of control, Exim attempts to do this bydefault.

    To allow for the possibility of caseful address list matching, if an item inan address list is the string +caseful, the original case of the localpart is restored for any comparisons that follow, and string comparisons are nolonger case-independent. This does not affect the domain, which remains inlower case. However, although independent matches on the domain alone are stillperformed caselessly, regular expressions that match against an entire addressbecome case-sensitive after +caseful has been seen.
