What are Domain Extensions and How do I Choose a Domain Extension?

Purchase easy misspells and other popular TLDs if they are available to keep anyone from squatting on your business name.

This could be costly later once you have built up a brand and the domain squatters know that you dont really have any negotiating leverage.

I once worked with a global brand that had to spend a couple of thousand dollars per domain name to successfully reclaim domains that could have been purchased for a few dollars when they first launched.

Authenticating Nxdomain Responses And Nsec

Cryptographically proving the absence of a domain requires signing the response to every query for a non-existent domain. This is not a problem for online signing servers, which keep their keys available online. However, DNSSEC was designed around using offline computers to sign records so that zone-signing-keys could be kept in cold storage. This represents a problem when trying to authenticate responses to queries for non-existent domains since it is impossible to pre-generate a response to every possible hostname query.

The initial solution was to create NSEC records for every pair of domains in a zone. Thus if a client queried for a record at the non-existent k.example.com, the server would respond with an NSEC record stating that nothing exists between a.example.com and z.example.com. However, this leaks more information about the zone than traditional unauthenticated NXDOMAIN errors because it exposes the existence of real domains.

The NSEC3 records were created as an alternative which hashes the name instead of listing them directly. Over time, advancements in hashing using GPUs and dedicated hardware meant that NSEC3 responses could be cheaply brute forced using offline dictionary attacks. NSEC5 has been proposed to allow authoritative servers to sign NSEC responses without having to keep a private key that can be used to modify the zone. Thus stealing an NSEC5KEY would only result in the ability to more easily enumerate a zone.

What Is A Domain Name Domains Explained For Beginners

Domain name extensions

A domain name is a web address consisting of a website name and a domain name extension. The name is up to you as long as it consists of letters, numbers, hyphens and is still available, whereas the domain extension is usually a set combination of a few letters.

Just like a physical address helps people find a specific place, the purpose of a domain is to help visitors find a website. Without domain names, users can only access websites using Internet Protocol addresses.

However, IP addresses are hard to remember as they consist of seemingly random series of numbers, making them inconvenient to share. Domain names, on the contrary, can help drive traffic to your website.

In this article, we will cover all the necessary information about domain names. We will explain how domains work and their different types. Then, we will show how to register and transfer a domain name and answer some frequently asked questions.

Gtlds: Generic Top Level Domains

A generic top-level domain is an extension that does not rely on a country code. There are no specific criteria to get a gTLD. However, some extensions are sponsored by designated agencies or organizations.

Some generic TLDs are restricted to specific types of registrants. For example, an academic institution can use .edu, and a governmental agency can use .gov. If your domain does not fall under particular categories or institutions, you will not be able to use the extension.

Think About Your Social Presence

If youre naming a new business, it is ideal to make sure you can get some other social media accounts with the same business name.

Before you settle on the domain use KnowEm.com to make sure that the most popular social media handles are available.

    Restricted Vs Unrestricted Domain Extensions

Even if a domain name extension is available, it doesnt mean you can purchase it. A lot of domain name extensions are restricted. That means only certain types of companies, organizations, or institutions can use that given TLD.

For example, only educational institutions can utilize the .edu domain extensions. The same goes for .mil: only military-related websites can use that domain extension. Likewise, the .gov extensions can only be used by government websites.

However, there are still very popular unrestricted domain extensions you can use like .com, .org, and .net. Plus, most new domain extensions like .co, .xyz, and more are available for your use as well.

    Generic Domain Extensions

Three Pieces Of Advice For Finding The Name Of Your Domain

Domain name tips for startups – domain extensions

Your domain name is the main access gate to your website.

Easy to write and to say

A name which is too complicated leads to confusion and makes searching for your site more complicated. On the other hand, a name which is simple to write makes it more memorable and helps with word of mouth.

    Easily remembered and intuitive

Make it easier to memorise and assimilate your domain name by giving priority to the meaning. You can do this by encouraging your activity to be deduced from your company name, with a generic extension or with the extension of the country your target would logically expect.

Just like your company name your domain will be memorable and intuitive thanks to a clever association of keywords or concepts which will help them to be remembered. If you make delicious pizzas, for example, you could choose “delipizza”.

At Infomaniak, we are passionate about information technology. That is why we decided to express it in our name!

    Use strategic keywords

Use keywords to specify what you are doing, refocus or expand your audience. For example, you can mention a geographical area next to your name to define your catchment area or, on the contrary, use a generic name to aim at a wider audience.

Include a keyword which is likely to respond to internet user queries in search engines in order to generate visits by people who are really interested in your services or what you are offering.

How To Choose The Right Domain Extension

Think about websites you know that use .com, .org, and .net these extensions each likely carry different meanings and set different expectations for you. Its important to pick a domain name with an extension that appropriately communicates your type of service or organization.

When running an online business, .com will do the trick. However, its often not that simple with .coms limited availability. If you cant secure your domain of choice with the .com extension, alternative domain extension options can help put your site on the map.

In this section, Ill compare .com with a few popular alternatives and weigh the pros and cons of each.

    Other Domain Name Types

We focused on the different extension types above. The following are the different available structures of domain names:

    Second-Level Domains

Second-level domains are below TLDs in the domain name hierarchy. An SLD is the section of a domain name located on the left side of the last dot. Take www.hostinger.com, for example hostinger is the SLD, and .com is the TLD.

Some domain name registries use an SLD to indicate a specific type of entity registering. For example, academic institutions in the United Kingdom mostly register websites under .ac.uk.

    Subdomains

A subdomain is a separate division from a larger domain but still shares the same servers. There is no need to purchase and register a subdomain. Technically, the www on most URLs is a subdomain that indicates a site is part of the world wide web.

The most common use for a subdomain is to organize and divide web content into separate sections. For example, Google uses developers.google.com to provide specific information for developers.

Another use of a subdomain is to create another website with the same name but different languages. Take Wikipedia as an example, which has a separate subdomain for each language. It uses en.wikipedia.org for the English version and es.wikipedia.org for the Spanish one.

    Free Domains

A free web address often uses the same structure as subdomains. For example, instead of hostingertutorials.com, it would be hostingertutorials.wordpress.com or hostingertutorials.blogspot.com.
