What To Do After Buying A Domain

Don't Miss

Verify Your Email Address

How To Build A Website After Buying Domain Name

After you buy a domain, you must verify your email address to complete your domain registration. Check your email account for several emails from Shopify that you need to review. These emails include details about the following:

  • confirming your purchase
  • verifying your email address
  • managing how your data is shared.

If you don’t receive an email about verifying your email address, then check your email inbox’s spam folder or resend the verification email from your Shopify admin. If you don’t verify your email address, then your domain might be suspended.

Note

If you already own a domain through Shopify that’s registered with the same first name, last name, and email address, then your email address might be verified automatically. If your email address is verified automatically, then you won’t receive an email about verifying your email address.

Can I Point My Domain Name To Any Website

If you want to make your site accessible after moving from another hosting provider, you must point your domain to a new host. Changing the domains nameservers is a simple way to do that. The details of your new nameservers can be found in the domains DNS settings, and the DNS will propagate once it has been copied.

  • Take note of all the Nameservers details provided, including the IP address.
  • Log in to the account where you bought the domain name, and look for the domains nameservers settings. You might find it in the Domain Overview or Domain Management menu.
  • Change the domain nameservers to the ones on your hosting account.
  • Keep in mind that it may take around 24 hours for the domain name changes to take effect. However, you can clear your DNS cache to speed up the process.

How To Register A Domain Name With Namecheap

As the name suggests, this Namecheap offers great value for money. Its .com domains start from $8.88/year, which is a low price compared to the rest of the market.

To buy a domain name on Namecheap, head over to the homepage and insert a name on the search field. Alternatively, head to the Bulk Domain Name Search tool and enter up to 5,000 keywords and find multiple domains at once.

The site will redirect you to the search results page. Feel free to sort the available domains by cost, extension, or alphabetical order. Click Add to Cart on the name you want to register and the Checkout button on the bottom-right corner to continue with the payment process.

The page will preview the order and suggest several add-ons to add to the cart, including PremiumDNS for a performance and security boost. This domain registrar also provides a free privacy and protection feature.

Confirm the order to move on to the next step creating a Namecheap account. Insert your contact information, including your name, phone number, email, and physical address. Enter a company name and tick the Im registering on behalf of a company box if applicable.

Press Continue to go to the Setup page. Here, specify the contact information for the domains registrant, administrator, technical support, and billings. If youre responsible for all these things, select User default account contact. Otherwise, choose to Add new contact where appropriate.

Choosing To Build Your Own Site

If youre going to build your site yourself then you need hosting.

Although I recommend them for domain registration, I dont suggest using Godaddy.com or Namecheap for hosting.

Instead, I suggest getting a hosting account through a company that specializes in hosting. I have a few recommendations for you if youre interested.

LiquidWeb.com is fantastic if you need a robust platform and you have a lot going on. For instance if youre hosting your own online course platform through a WordPress LMS plugin then youll have what I consider a lot going on in your hosting account. Liquidweb is pretty expensive though at about $99 a month for the cheapest WordPress hosting plan. Liquidweb makes more sense if you have multiple sites or one large site with a high volume of traffic.

Kinsta.com is a great WordPress host. They offer fairly affordable plans for a single site which start at about $30 a month. However, depending on the number of visitors you have, it can get expensive. Hopefully as you get more visitors, youll be earning more to offset the increasing charges.

If you want to start out with a less expensive plan that can still grow with you, then SiteGround is perfect. You can start with a $10 a month plan and move up from there.

Sign Up With A Web Host

Buying a domain name does not automatically give you a website. A domain name is just a name that you can attachto any website you want. It’s like in the brick and mortar world, where if you want to open a shop, you first have toregister a company name. Getting that business name doesn’t mean that you automatically get shop premises. You have todo that separately, by looking for a place to rent , then setting up your shop there.

In the same way, on the Internet, registering a domain merely means that you get a name to use for your site. You will still need to get a place on which to put your website. This “place” is usually obtained by signing up with aweb host. The latter are companieswith computers that are set up in a special way so that any document you place there can be viewed by people on the Internet. You can find a list of web hosts here, from which you can choose one, to place your site.

Incidentally, some domain registrarsare also web hosts. If you have already signed up for a web hosting account with them when you bought your domain, you can skip this step. You already have a web host.

Redirect Your Domain To Your Social Media Profiles

If you just dont want to invest in anything yet want to effectively use your parked domain, you can simply login to your domain registrars dashboard and redirect the domain to your social profiles like Twitter profile or Facebook page.

This can be done free of charge.

For example, https://www.facebook.com/swadhinagrawalofficial can become https://swadh.in

    • Disable your domains privacy settings.
    • Ensure the admin contact information is updated and correct.
    • Get your transfer authorization code, also known as an EPP code.
    • Depending on your registrar, you may need to contact them directly for your code.
  • Ensure your domain is at least 60 days old or opt-out of your domain lock.
  • Make sure your domain isnt tangled up in any legal disputes as thats a quick way to get it locked at the registry level.
  • What is the 60-day domain lock?

As of December 1, 2016, domain registrars are required to impose a lock that prevents a domain name from transfer for 60 days post-change to a registrants information.

The good news? Registrars can provide a way to opt out of the 60-day lock. Not all registrars offer that ability upfront, which can make life difficult when managing domain names.

At Domain.com, we believe you should have total management of your domain name, so we provide the option to unlock your domain right from your account dashboard. Simply toggle your domain lock on or off, depending on your needs.
