What Domain Registrar Should I Use

Don't Miss

So Can Any Company Become A Registrar

How To Use a Custom Domain Name with Your Web Server

The short answer is yes. However, it is always better if a company gets accredited by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, ICANN for short. The ICANN is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to manage domain names and allow companies to add and modify names on the registry. Seeing as how we now understand what a domain name registrar is and what it does, we can start thinking about what criteria should be kept in mind when shopping for one.

Domain Registrars I Use

The domain registrar is the most important domain industry company. My domain registrars are tasked with keeping my domain names safe and resolving to the right location. My registrar choice is based on several factors in varying order:

My preference is to keep my domain names consolidated at one domain registrar, but I use several registrars for my portfolio. Auction wins and private acquisitions are the primary reasons for why I use multiple domain registrars.

I saw a tweet today that inspired this article:

For the curious, here are my registrars in order of # of domains held:

EpikDynadot NameBright

I thought I would share the domain registrars I use in order of the most domain names I have registered there:

  • Network Solutions

The vast majority of my portfolio is held at GoDaddy. I appreciate their customer support the most, and I also like the added DTVS security I have enabled across the account. I can call or email my Account Manager when I cant do something on my own, and many people I buy from or sell to either have GoDaddy accounts or are comfortable enough with the company to use them.

The other registrars are used because my auction wins end up there due to their relationships with the auction house. In the case of NameBright, I trust them enough to keep up to 100 or so domain names, but usually fewer. I typically try to transfer names out of Network Solutions on a more regular basis, but it can be a challenge to get names transferred.

How A Domain Registrar Works

A domain name is a unique web address that allows people to easily find your site online. As you go through the process of choosing your domain name, youll also need to pick a place to register it. Thats where domain registrars come in. A domain registrar is the entity through which you purchase and set up your domain it also assigns your URL to a unique IP address.

Namecheap The Best Domain Names For $1 Or Less

Looking for the absolute lowest cost to register your domain? Namecheap is the way to snag your sites real estate for dirt cheap.

The company offers some of the best prices on popular domain extensions. Youll find .com domain names for less than $10 per year.

If you are looking for a newer domain extension, the price drops even lower. Thats where the real savings happen.

You can find plenty of domains that start at just 99 cents for the first year and boatloads more that are no more than $6 per year.

If youre willing to think outside the box, you can get a memorable, short domain for next to nothing. With all the new TLDs available, you may actually find a URL that works better than a .com.

I like the example Namecheap gives: instead of helpme.com, you could just go with help.me. Its shorter, easy to remember, and still preserves the keywords you want to use in the domain.

In fact, theres a lot about going with Namecheap as your domain registrar that will save you money in the long term.

WHOIS privacy is free forever with your domain. That saves around $15 per year compared to registrars who charge for it.

You also get email forwarding, which lets you set up professional email addresses with your domain name. Receive all your messages in your current inbox or set up another free Gmail to handle it. Your call, it wont cost anything either way.

And if you are unsure about DNS records or how to get your site set up, you can reach out to Namecheap 24/7.

Does The Registrar Offer The Desired Domain Name

Resource Center

Those looking to register a domain name usually know the domain name they wish to register. When considering a registrar, they should first make sure the registrar offers the desired domain name. Not all registrars have access to the same top-level domains . A good registrar should have a user-friendly domain name search that can be used to confirm whether or not they can register a particular domain name.

Com Vs Net Whats The Difference Between Domain Extensions

Are you starting a new website? Trying to come up with a domain name? Cant decide whether to choose a .net or .com domain?

Choosing a domain name is going to be one of your first steps when launching a new website. If youre like most people, youre probably thinking of using your business or organization name as your domain name, along with a .com extension.

This makes sense, as .com is the most popular domain extension in the world and you want your new website to be instantly recognizable.

As you may already have found, most good domain names have already been registered on a .com extension. If this is true for yours, you might be contemplating using a .net instead.

Since .net extensions have a far lower penetration than .com, youre far likelier to find a suitable domain name that matches your brand.

While .net domains may be more readily available, thats often for good reason.

Before you go ahead to choose a .net extension in place of a .com, you should understand what each extension means and the pros and cons of choosing either one.

How Do You Use A Domain Registrar

First, you need to determine which domain registrar is likely to be the best for you based on your requirements and the price range. Once you make the purchase, you can move on to using the software.

Im demonstrating the steps here with examples from an industry leader, Domain.com.

First and foremost, login to your account and click on the purchase domain option.

An editor will pop up so that you can type your preferred domain name, your niche, or any other related keywords. It lets you search and see various domain names that are available in the market.

The status of the name of your choice is visible on the right-hand side. In this example, the first name is already taken. You can choose from one of the remaining three choices below by clicking on the Add button provided.

Once you choose a name and add it, it automatically gets transferred to the purchasing cart. Youll get a detailed breakup of the cost youre incurring, domain information, and a sub-total in the cart.

Finally, click on the Continue to Checkout button on the bottom right. Youll get directed to the final checkout page, where youll need to finalize the order.

Once you finalize the checkout, it can take anywhere between 15 to 45 minutes to process your order.

Before using a domain registrar, its good to know exactly which characters are allowed for use while choosing a domain name. For example, Domain.com doesnt permit special characters, non-English alphabets, and spaces.

Trick #: Shop Around For The Url And Extension You Want

How to Point Domain Name to Web Hosting

Generally speaking, any available domain name can be purchased from a reputable domain registrar, including the tools listed earlier in this guide. But some registrars only offer certain TLDs. This is usually the case if domain registration isnt the primary service offered by a particular platform.

So if the URL and domain extension you want cant be registered from the first place you looked, dont assume that its impossible to get. Shop around and look at other domain registrars. You can probably find what youre looking for elsewhere.

This is especially true if you want a really unique extension. You might not be able to get an extension like .wedding or .cool from a web hosting provider. But a service that specializes in domain registration will have more options.

Domain Name Vs Ip Address: What’s The Difference

With a domain, you dont have to enter a long set of numbers in the address bar. Instead, you only need to type an easy-to-remember domain name and it will get you to your desired location.

To better understand how this works, take a look at this brief explanation of the entire process:

  • When a user enters a domain name in their web browser, it first sends a request to a global network of servers that form the Domain Name System .
  • The servers then search for the name servers that are related to the domain and forward the request to them.
  • Next, a hosting company forwards the request to the computer where the website is stored, which is called a web server and it has special software installed that helps it act as a server.
  • The server then fetches the web page and information related to it and sends the data back to the browser .
  • Domain names and information are registered and maintained by domain registries. They work with domain registrars in order to provide registration services to users. The end-users select the registrars that provide the registration service and that way registrars become designated for the domain chosen by the user.

Finally, only the designated registrar is able to modify or delete information about domain names in a central registry database, and that is the reason why users sometimes switch registrars. This is called a domain transfer process between registrars and it is governed by specific domain name transfer policies.

    Registration Period And Renewal Rates

    Resource Center

Most domain registrars offer promotional pricing for your initial contract term. Some limit your initial contract term to one or two years, while others may give you five to 10 years.

So if youre looking to save money, your best bet is opting for the longest registration period available. Max out the discount for as long as possible.

This is also a great way to ensure no one else can buy it, since you dont have to remember to renew it every year.

Of the domain registrars that Ive reviewed in this post, Namecheap, NameSilo, and Google Domains will each allow you to purchase a domain for the full 10-year term at checkout. Domain.com maxes out at five years. There arent any tricky rebate policies with any of them, though, which is why I like these registrars the best.

With Hostinger, you get a free domain for the first year when you sign up for hosting and the renewal rate is usually only a few dollars more.

For Hostinger and the domain registrars, both the promotional and renewal prices will vary according to the top level domain you choose. See the table below:

As you can see, the price changes a lot depending on the TLD . Another name for TLD is domain extension, so you might see that term, too. They are the same thing.

Lets talk a little bit more about these TLDs and how to choose a registrar that will make your hunt for the perfect domain as easy as possible

Ology For Choosing The Best Domain Registrar

With different domain registrars having such similar features, how can you determine the best option for you?

There are certain factors that you need to look for when youre shopping around for the best domain registrar. Ill explain these elements in greater detail below, so you can weigh the options according to your personal needs.

This is our methodology for finding the best domain registrar:

Be Careful When Buying Existing Domain Names

As I mentioned a couple of points above, buying an existing domain name is a bit different from buying a new one. First of all, since its not new, this means it already has a history. And you can never be entirely sure what that history is.

    • On the bright side, the domains history may give you a boost in Google since youre not starting from scratch Google already knows the domain.
    • But, on the flip side, if the domain has featured any kind of non-kosher stuff , then it may be banned from Google entirely.

Buying your domain from a marketplace such as Flippa gives you some safety, since every domain is validated at least in the most basic way. However, to make things a bit safer, you should also perform checks of your own.

First, do a manual check by going to Google and searching for:

    site:YOURDOMAIN.com

This will tell you whether Google has any pages indexed from that domain. Finding anything is a good sign. It means the domain isnt banned. Not finding anything doesnt have to be a deal-breaker, though.

    • If the domain is blank no website then theres nothing for Google to find in the first place.
    • However, if there is a website but Google cant see it , this is a red flag.

You can also do checks via tools such as bannedcheck.com and ismywebsitepenalized.com. But also keep in mind that these things are not foolproof. Consider them helpers.

But we can still do more:

    Several Options For Registration Timeframes

Choosing a Domain Name: Do This FIRST!

You cant register a domain name for one or two months. The legal minimum is one year. Therefore, you should expect to pay for an entire year when looking for a domain registrar.

However, some registrars require you to sign up for more than one year. If you stumble upon a registrar like this, think about looking elsewhere.

The best situation is to have multiple options for registration timeframes.

We like seeing a registrar that offers commitments for one and two yearsor even more. This way you can decide on how long you would like to have the domain, and potentially receive a discount for a registration of multiple years.

The maximum amount of time you can register a domain for is 10 years. After the ten years, you need to renew.

In general, we would recommend registering for one year unless theres a significant discount for anything more than that. Also, domain registration length being an SEO ranking factor is a myth!

AFAIK most registrars don’t provide registration length anyway. That’s not what you want to spend your “SEO time” on.
