Map Your Domain To Squarespace

How to Transfer a domain from Godaddy to Squarespace? (2021)

This post will take you through how to point your domain to Squarespace. After you connect your domain over at Squarespace , a new panel will open providing you the records you need to enter into the Advanced DNS Editor at Reclaim Hosting so your domain can be pointed correctly to Squarespace.

For Squrespace you need to create two CNAME Records and four A Records. The CNAME records appear to be used as a way to verify your account. You can see an example of the two I created below. Keep in mind the Name field for the verify.squarespace.com CNAME will be have a unique code in front of your domain. What I have listed below for the Name field will be a value Squarespace will provide.

The second CNAME you create will have www.yourdomain.com in your Name field.

You will then need to add four A Records pointing to four different IP address that Squarespace provides you.

Below is a look at the four A Records I created for this domain.

That should be all you need to get your domain mapped to Squarespace. I have never seen a service use both CNAME and A Records for one domain, I imagine they are building in a lot of redundancy, which is not necessarily a bad thing, just a bit more work at the point of setup.

Add The Second Cname Record

On the second line of your Squarespace DNS Settings, you will see a www that appears directly below the Host column. This record must point to ext-cust.squarespace.com.

In your provider’s DNS manager, create a CNAME with the value listed on your Squarespace DNS Settings.

Squarespace Note: Depending on your provider, you may already have a CNAME set up with a www Alias. If so, edit this existing CNAME so that Points To is ext-cust.squarespace.com.

Note Your Dns Parameters

After connecting Squarespace to your domain, a new panel opens with records that you need to enter in your PlanetHoster account for the reverse operation, that is, connect your domain to Squarespace.

Creating records is necessary in order for your Squarespace site to be properly linked to your PlanetHoster domain.

The records are listed in the Required Data column:

Keep this panel open for reference. If you close it and need to access your DNS settings again, open Domains in the Settings panel. Then click on your third-party domain name.

Your domain records may be green or red, depending on what Squarespace sees from PlanetHoster. The problematic Current Data is shown in red under the column with the same name:

How to Manage Multiple Domains | Squarespace 7.1 Tutorial

Take a read over this article to learn how to edit your DNS settings. It shows you how to find where to configure your DNS even if youre not using Plesk to manage the records. In that article, look specifically for the A record section and take a quick read through it.

Heres a few tips:

  • If you have multiple domains, make sure you youre managing the DNS records for the right domain! .
  • Ensure you are editing the correct A or CNAME record. You have many records by default and the correct one will have no subdomain/host value. . Example: if your domain is mydomain.com then it is not the A record for ns1.mydomain.com that you need to edit, but rather the A record for: mydomain.com.
  • How best to configure the www. subdomain:
  • If your DNS records are managed in Plesk and your External Provider indicates to also change the www. record, we recommend trying leaving it at the default instead. It should continue to work without changing it in Plesk. If, after 24 hours of changing your root DNS record the www. record still does not work, then please do change it as recommended by your External Provider
  • If you your domain is registered with us and you have configured its name servers with the option to âManage my DNS records manuallyâ, then your DNS hosting is managed within our Client Centre and not within Plesk. In this instance, we recommend setting the www. record as indicated by the provider.

If you added the www version of your domain earlier, youll want to set up a CNAME record as well. A CNAME points a subdomain to another domain name.

For example, with a CNAME in place, visitors entering www.mystunningwebsite.com in their browser will be redirected to mystunningwebsite.com. Without a CNAME record, visitors will instead reach an error page.

  • In the Website Defaults section, hover over the records, then click the trash can to delete your default records. Your domain cant point to another site when these defaults are in place. You can always add them again if you need them later.
  • Scroll down to Custom Records.
  • From the Record drop-down menu, select CNAME.
  • In the Host field, enter www.
  • In the Data field, enter the sites primary domain.
  • Click Add, then click Save at the top of the page to complete the process.
