Why Should You Find Domains Owned By A Company

How to Find Out Who Actually Owns a Domain Name 3 Ways

During a black box, or grey box penetration testing engagement for a company, one of the main things you will need to discover is the domains owned by the company. This technique is also useful for other, marketing and business analysis purposes.

The first steps to perform is basic search to find out their website and thus their domain name.

You will use this domain to perform a whois lookup to find out the Registrant Organization name for this domain. Reverse Whois lookups is a powerful way to identify relatioships between registrants information.

NOTE: Some domain owners have opted for Private Registration. In this case their contact details will not be available in the public whois database.

How To Check The History Of A Domain Name

The first computers started connecting to one another through Wide Area Networks in the 1960s. However, it took several years before the Internet exploded in 1990. The World Wide Web was created a year later, which also gave way to commercial service providers to begin operating. The registration of domain names became an official part of the process.

Initially, owning a domain name was free but the exponential increase of Internet use needed to be controlled. Registration services were offered, and the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers was created. ICANN is a nonprofit corporation that manages the domain name system of the Internet, as well as its other elements, including IP address allocation and protocol parameter designation.

Fast forward to today, it is estimated that there are more than 19 million registered domain names. Approximately 40,000 are registered each day, proving that there is nothing that can stop the Internet from growing. Buying a domain name from a domain registrar is now a simple process which takes less than 2 minutes.

Who Legally Owns A Domain

Searching for a domains owner can turn up multiple names provided as contacts for functions such as technical support, administration, and billing. But, the legal owner of a website is the registrantthe person or entity in whose name the domain has been registered with a dedicated domain registrar or hosting provider. As long as registration fees are kept up to date, that owner retains full rights to the domain and has sole control over selling it at any time, whether or not the domain is nearing expiration.

Why Do Some Whois Queries Have More Information Than Others

Domain Registration

With WHOIS now in a state of change due in part to privacy laws such as GDPR, the data displayed in a WHOIS lookup can vary to some degree as each of the Registrant, Registrar and Registry have a jurisdictional nexus with such laws.

Where a nexus with the EU’s GDPR is present, Personally Identifiable Information will often be removed or redacted from WHOIS output.

The Internet is the first place customers will look to find out how to access your products and services, and they must be able to discover your business. To get them the information they need, you need a professional online presence. That includes a domain name thats clear, unique, and distinctive. How Can This Tool Find Out Registered Domains From An Ip Address

This is one that I’ve never really known how to do, and it’s been nagging me from time to time for years. I’ve read all I could find, including all the answers here. None of them gives a real answer to the question. So please read carefully before flagging a duplicate it is not.

dig, host, nslookup… none of them seems to be able to get what I’m after.

At most I can get pointers like ec2-xxx-xxx-xxx-xxx.us-east-2.compute.amazonaws.com.

But if I use this online tool, I get exactly what I’m looking for: every domain that resolves to the IP address given . In this case, it’s a freemium service, so it’ll only list the first few, but it works. In the following image, I use three domains that I own and serve from a VPS. They are totally unrelated, but they all appear here:

What black magic are they using? How can we replicate it?

  • Noted it doesn’t work at all on IPv6 – too much data to index. And it also misses things that don’t start in www. CriggieJun 5, 2019 at 1:07

It’s brute force.

They have looked up the IP addresses of every domain name they can find, and then compiled the results into their own database.

  • 3The only part that is unclear to me is how they find a list of every domain name as there isn’t a central list anywhere. Edit: Looks like they don’t have everything because my website that has been up for years is not listedJun 5, 2019 at 4:38

    How Is Whois Changing

How Domain Ownership is Determined (& Why it Matters)

In light of the General Data Protection Regulation, or GDPR, coming into force within the European Union in May 2018, many Registries and Registrars that operate within that region, or globally, are required to gain Registrant’s consent before disclosing Personally Identifiable Information to any third parties or the public. As a result of the implementation of the GDRP, much of the data historically found within WHOIS will no longer be included or be redacted. The absence of this information has a trickle-down effect throughout the domain industry, affecting WHOIS data output for domain names and Registrants that do not have an immediate or obvious nexus to the European Union
