If you just want Wix to take care of everything: website, email, and DNS management, this is the quickest way to do it. Please note that if you added any custom DNS records at Porkbun previously, you’ll need to re-add them at Wix using their DNS editor.

Log in. You should arrive at the Domain Management screen. If you’re already logged in, click on ACCOUNT in the top-right corner and select Domain Management.

In a new tab, be sure to log into your Wix account and go to your Wix domains page. You will want to have this page open, while you add Wix nameservers in Porkbun, as noted in their guide on configuring nameservers.

A pop-up window should appear with your current nameservers. If youve never changed this setting before, the list is pre-populated with Porkbuns nameservers.

Remove all of the existing entries by highlighting and deleting them. Add the Wix nameservers, one per line. Click the blue Submit button to save your changes. For example:

So let’s get right into this Wix tutorial on how to connect a domain to your Wix website, where we’ll discuss Wix domain cost and how to change a domain on Wix.

First off, if you don’t have a Wix account yet, just . After you’ve logged in to your Wix account, hover your mouse over the website you want to add a domain to Wix to, and then click on ‘select site’.

This will redirect you to your Wix website’s dashboard. Click on ‘settings’ from the left-hand side panel, and then on ‘website settings’. Under this ‘site address ‘ section, click on ‘manage domain’. To connect a domain name you own to a Wix website, click on ‘add an existing domain up top’ and then on ‘connect a domain you already own’.

Add your domain in the space provided, click on ‘I’m looking to connect a subdomain’ so that it changes to ‘I’m looking to connect a domain’, and then click on ‘next’. First, Wix provides free domain registration for the first year when you register a new website through their platform, but after the first year your domain will renew at $15 a year. If youre not sure if creating a website is for you, this is a helpful way to save some money on your initial startup costs.

Long term however, free is not free. Its free for the first year, but the renewal rate at Wix is quite expensive and is almost double what a domain registrar like Namecheap charges.

The next benefit to registering through Wix is that your custom domain and SSL will be setup correctly and immediately. Unlike using a domain registrar where you have to wait a few hours for everything to propagate, getting your domain at Wix will have your website with its custom domain ready to go in minutes.

This technical setup may be a bit techy for beginners with you needing to create an A-record and a CNAME record in order to point your domain to Wix and have an active SSL.

Last, you can also transfer an existing domain to your Wix account if you already have one registered elsewhere, but this is costly and time consuming so we dont recommend it. Please note that the cost to transfer a domain is a separate fee from the registration and renewal costs.

Its not possible to get the domain for free at Wix for the first year and then transfer it to Namecheap in order to avoid the more expensive renewal fee at Wix.

Connecting A Domain Name To Wix

There are two options: connecting the domain name via name servers or pointing your domain name to a Wix site:

Whats the better option then?

Usually, its option 1. Especially if you are not using any email inbox with your domain name yet, its better to connect your name servers with Wix .

If you are already using an external email provider, pointing your domain name to Wix may be more convenient as your email accounts will just continue working without any further changes from your side. The only small disadvantage here: should Wix ever move your website to a new server, you may have to get your A-record updated. Not a biggie, but better if it all happens in the background without your involvement.

Keep in mind that your domain registrar will be able to assist you with these DNS changes.

Be aware that the connection process can take up to 48 hours, so dont panic if you dont see immediate results.

To Point Your Domain To Wix

Wix require you to configure the blank host name, and the www host name as A records. They also recommend creating m.yourdomain.com as an A record to make use of their mobile site function. All 3 records must be directed to 216.139.213.144. Dependent on your domains current DNS configuration, your screen may look slightly different to the screenshot below, but you must create/update the 3 records circled.

Once you have added the 3 records, select Save at the bottom of the screen. Please allow 24-48 hours for these changes to take effect.

Connecting A Domain To Wix Using The Pointing Method

Step 3: Login to the Wix site dashboard > Settings > Click on Connect Domain.

Step 4: Click on Upgrade.

Step 5: Now click on Connect a domain you already own.
