How To Verify Domain Ownership For Most Service Providers

Some service providers require that you verify your ownership of the domain name when taking the service into use. Some of the services are for example Facebook Business pages, Google Search Console and Analytics or email services like Google Workspace and MS Office 365. This is done for security reasons. All services offer multiple different ways to verify ownership but most commonly used are these.

    Verify with html file

The fastest and easiest way to verify that you own your domain is to download verification file from the service setup page. Google verification filename looks like google4ddabfacdb4fxxxx.html and Facebook’s < letter-and-number-code> .html

  • Upload the file to your website’s server in htdocs folder. You can do that for example by using a SFTP-client or with SCP in command line.
  • After this check that the file can be found by opening it in the browser: mydomain.com/< verificationfile> .html

Send us an email at if you need any help with this.

    Verify with DNS record

The other way to verify domain ownership is to add TXT-type verification record in the DNS settings. For example:

Add Subdomains Of A Custom Domain

How to Verify Domain Name on Facebook with Meta Tag – WordPress, Shopify, WooCommerce

If you want to add a subdomain name such as âeurope.contoso.comâ to your organization, you should first add and verify the root domain, such as contoso.com. The subdomain is automatically verified by Azure AD. To see that the subdomain you added is verified, refresh the domain list in the browser.

If you have already added a contoso.com domain to one Azure AD organization, you can also verify the subdomain europe.contoso.com in a different Azure AD organization. When adding the subdomain, you are prompted to add a TXT record in the DNS hosting provider.

Another Organization Already Verified The Domain

If someone else has already verified the domain, well display a warning message letting you know. In this situation, someone at your company might have verified the domain under another organization. We recommend that you find an admin of that organization and ask them to remove the domain from its list of verified domains. If you aren’t sure who to ask, contact support.

What If The Domain Is Set As The Default

It is good practice to have a default verified sender domain. Our system will use the default verified sender domain if a non-verified domain is used for the email for the account. This is particularly important if sub-accounts are using the main account sender domain or resellers want notification emails to send using their domain.

Easy Steps To Verify Domain Ownership Via Dns Record

When youre the owner of your domain then why you need to verify it? Well, we will answer it in the article later but now we will discuss how to verify domain ownership via DNS record method.

You might have seen this DNS verification in Google Search Console, or in Bing Webmaster tools. Am I right?

A domain name is a unique name of your online business ends with a TLD extension like .com, .net etc. Every domain is just a name, so to build a website on it you will need to connect it with a hosting server IP address .

DNS records help you to add this IP in your domain. An IP is considered as an A record of a domain. Similarly, there is an option to add TXT records in your domain. These txt records are nothing but a text value just used for domain verification purposes.

These TXT records are very helpful when you will need to verify your domain ownership.

So, today I will show you practically on how to verify domain ownership using DNS txt record method. For example, I will try to verify my domain in Google Search Console using the TXT record verification process.

I will use the Cloudflare DNS, but you can continue the following steps with your domain registrar DNS system.

My reasons behind choosing Cloudflare DNS are:

    • It is one of the fastest DNS resolver.
    • You no longer need to update domain name servers again after you successfully set up Cloudflare nameservers.
    • Instantly add, update or delete DNS records with zero downtime.
    • Free to use.

Add Dns Records To Hosting Provider

Login to your hosting provider and navigate to the DNS section. This area is called DNS at Cloudflare, but weve seen it called Networking in Digital Ocean and Zone Editor in cPanel.

Next, youll be asked what type of DNS records you want to add. Well go through each one individually.

    TXT Records

The first records Mailgun asks you to add are TXT records. We will add two separate TXT records, one for SPF and one for DKIM. These are required to send and receive email with Mailgun.

If youre using a subdomain, add a new TXT record with mail.yourdomain.com as the hostname and the appropriate value Mailgun provides. You can leave TTL as the default option.

Clicking Add Record will add your first DNS entry for your domain!

Add another TXT record for mx._domainkey.mail.yourdomain.com. Cloudflare only shows the subdomain, so your result will look like this:

    MX Records

Next, you need to add MX records. Mailgun requires you to add two separate MX records.

You will add the MX records the same way you did with the TXT records. The hostname in this case is mail.yourdomain.com Youll also be asked for priority, which should be 10.

    CNAME Record

Lastly, you will need to add a CNAME record. The CNAME Record is what enables Open and Click tracking. This is highly recommended to reap the full benefit of Mailgun and gain insights into your email performance.

Add the CNAME the same way as the others. The hostname here is email.mail.yourdomain.com
