Import Your Wix Web Store Data Into Your New Shopify Site

How to Connect your Domain to your Shopify Store

Since your Shopify site is for making sales, the proper transfer of content from your Wix store to Shopify is essential. One way is to manually upload your products, their content, specifications, cost and SEO parameters through the sidebar. This method is practical if you have a small assortment of products.

For a larger number of products export your web store data into a CSV file from the control panel of your Wix web page and import this data into your corresponding Shopify site. Use the same procedure to import customer lists and other website content. This method turns out to be a bit complicated and time consuming.

Transferring Your Domain From Shopify

In order to offer domain name registration services Shopify uses a company called Open SRS.

If you have a login for Open SRS then you can just login to that account and make the DNS changes to your domain name to point it to ShopWired by following the instructions here.

Unfortunately Shopify doesn’t, as standard, issue Open SRS login details when you register your domain name so you probably won’t have these login details . You can contact Shopify support and ask for them, but they may take a while to respond to you.

An alternative is to transfer the domain name from your Shopify account to an external domain name registrar .

To do so, you’ll need to open a free account with a domain provider, we recommend doing this with GoDaddy.com.

Once you’ve opened your account you can then begin the domain name transfer.

Can You Move Your Domain Name From Shopify

Like we said earlier, having all of your services tied to one company is never a good idea. Your store is already tied to Shopify and buying a domain name from the platform ties your domain name, CMS, and hosting to Shopify.

You get the ease of setup and use as weve mentioned several times already but this comes at the expense of the ease of moving your domain name from Shopify.

Make no mistake, you can move your domain name from Shopify. The process is called domain name transfer. Moving your domain name from Shopify is a very complicated process that will cost you quite a lot of money and effort.

Its due to the stress of moving your domain from Shopify that we recommend that users register their domains through a domain name registrar. Your business could really grow in the future and you might want to move from domain Shopify for more control and flexibility in your store, theme, website, feel, and so on.

Do I Have To Redirect Every Url From My Old Site

Can I Change My Domain Name On Shopify?

    Not necessarily.

Heres the rule: redirect every URL that has a clear corresponding page on the new site. 404 everything else.

    Whats a 404?

That just means removing the page so that your site returns a 404 message any time someone tries to access that URL. It tells people that theres nothing there.

A few years ago, I was very anti-404. I used to think that every single URL needed a proper redirect and I went a bit overboard on a site. Eventually, our hosting provider reached out and told us that we had too many redirects on our site we needed to cut them down to 1,500. We had about 2,500 at the time.

They were right, we did have too many. I was paranoid about trying to help users land on the right page. I was also worried about losing any traffic from Google and I thought 404s might reduce our rankings. I was wrong on both counts.

First, users struggle a lot more with weird redirect paths than a 404. A 404 gives a super clear message: the page youre looking for doesnt exist. A weird redirect is really tough for a user to understand.

Second, Google prefers 404s for pages that no longer exist. Its a clear signal for them and they dont reduce rankings for sites that have 404s. Theyve publicly stated numerous times how they only want sites to add redirects for pages that have a one-to-one relationship.

    Shut Down The Old Site

Once your new Shopify e-commerce site is up and running, it is time to shut down your old site. Remember that you are paying for the old site, so you would not like to pay more than a month extra. Make sure there is no data left in the old site that has not been imported. Once you verify this, cancel the subscription. Thats it! The old site is now shut down and your new Shopify e-commerce site is up and running.

  • How To Transfer Squarespace Domain To Shopify

Squarespace is a great website platform. Its a fairly simple tool that is easy to understand and has some pretty great templates that give you a wonderful looking website.

    So why transfer to Shopify?

As an e-commerce website, Squarespace simply doesnt compare to Shopify, a website tool built for the purpose of e-commerce. Ive found that Squarespace is better suited for service-based businesses such as graphic designers, acupuncturist, lawyers, etc. If you must use Squarespace for e-commerce, its a great place to start for companies with smaller product offerings.

Sooner or later though, youll run into limitations when trying to grow your business. Squarespace does have a few integrations and plugins, but nowhere near the extent of Shopify. I digress. Ill talk more about when to choose Shopify vs Squarespace another time.

How to change domain name on my Shopify store in a few clicks?

Its not uncommon for people to have issues when trying to buy a domain from Shopify. There are several reasons why you may have problems buying a domain from Shopify but here are the most popular ones

Formatting issues with a phone number: You need to input the correct dial code of your country else you will experience issues when trying to buy a domain on Shopify. Also, you may correctly input your countrys dial code but format your phone number differently than expected.

You can check and edit your phone under Settings > General section of your admin page. Ensure you input the correct dial code of your country and use the formatting you see there.

Formatting issues with your billing address: Youll have to provide a billing address when buying a domain through Shopify. How To Transfer Own Domain Name From Squarespace To Shopify

Most users face problems and multiple questions, when it comes to domain name registration and their further migration from Squarespace to Shopify after content transfer. Actually, its no wonder as both website builders are quite complicated, especially for newbies, who have never migrated their websites before and dont have a single idea of the steps the process involves.

Transferring Your Squarespace Domain to Shopify

If you have bought a domain name from Squarespace and do not plan to change it, here is a quick overview of steps you should complete to make the process a success. Before you actually proceed to the domain transfer process, there are a few issues you should be aware of. To start with, the system allows transferring the domain to another provider only in case its registration period has exceeded 60 days.

If you intend to transfer a free domain name, the free offer does not carry over to the new domain name provider. Its up to the Squarespace to charge fees for the continuation of the domain service.

  • Login with Squarespace to unlock the domain name and get the get the authorization code. To do that, go to the Home Menu of the website builder, access the Settings section and then click the Domains.
  • Pick the domain name you plan to transfer, scroll down a bit and uncheck the Lock Domain button. Then youll have to copy the transfer key from the corresponding section youll see in the control panel.

    Get Your Redirects Ready

After you get your store built, its time to build your redirects.

There are two major reasons to build a list of redirects when transferring your store to Shopify:

  • It will ensure that any customer using an old URL ends up on the correct page of your new site after the switch, so you dont lose any revenue from people landing on dead pages.
  • Itll transfer any page authority that youve built for Google searches to the new URLs, helping your new store rank for search results and keep your traffic from dropping after the switch.
  • Luckily, Shopify has an easy way to add redirects to your new store. All the redirects will go live when you launch your new store.

You can add redirects within Shopify by going to Online Store > Navigation > URL Redirects. Theres also an option to import them as a batch.

Youll want to create a redirect for every URL that has a different location in Shopify. For example, products in Shopify have a URL like this: company.com/products/product-name

If your old product URLs use a different URL structure, youll want to create a redirect for each product. Same for any other pages that have a different location in Shopify.

Check the URL path of every page and product that you create in your new Shopify store. If theyre the same as your old store, theres nothing you need to do. If they have a new URL path, create a redirect for them.
