How to setup a Domain for your Minecraft server

Head over to Freenom and create an account first. From there go to Services > Register a new domain. Choose your domain name and claim it. There will be a checkout process, but no worries, no payment details are asked if you go for a free domain name.

After you successfully “ordered” your domain name, go to Services > My Domains > Manage Domain. Keep this page open for later.

What you want to do is possible, but not necessarily a good idea. Using an SRV record, you can have a web server and Minecraft server on the same address. Some computer configurations will not see SRV records, and players with those configurations will not be able to connect to your server. If this doesnt concern you, then you can carry on, otherwise just use separate domains. Its less hassle.

Minecraft supports SRV records, but browsers dont, so youll need to replace your existing DNS record with one for your web server.

First, create a separate A or AAAA record that points to your Minecraft server. It doesnt matter what you name it, as long as its different from your web server. Lets say its play.chaoticmc.com.

What If You Dont Want To Host Your Server At Home

Hosting any kind of server from home means youre exposing your home network to the world.

If youd rather not take that risk, then you can use a hosting provider instead. Youll need to pay a monthly or annual fee, but you wont have to deal with the hassle of managing the server hardware.

A GoDaddy Virtual Private Server is a good fit if youre just getting started. Just keep in mind that youre sharing hardware with other users, so keep an eye on resource usage.
