Does Transferring A Domain Name Affect My Custom Email Address

Moving your domain name doesnt mean you have to move your email hosting.

Are you using a third party to host your email? If so, it shouldnt be affected by transferring a domain name. Domain.com does not make changes to the name servers for your domain during the transfer process.

If your custom email address is hosted with your domain provider, a transfer could affect you. To avoid that, make sure to transfer your email accounts MX records to your new registrar while transferring your domain. By doing this, youll ensure your email account is linked to your domain name. However, youll continue to manage your email with your original provider.

Find Out Who Owns Your Dream Domain

The first step in buying a domain someone else owns is finding out who the other person is. You can do this by using WHOIS. This is like the white pages of a phone book. Many times the name, email and phone number of the person who owns the domain name is listed there.

There are times, however, when the person uses a privacy service or the information is out of date. Privacy on the WHOIS acts like an unlisted phone number it adds other information on the WHOIS to guard the owners personal information. The privacy email information almost always forwards to the real owners email address, so it is still possible to try and contact them through the private email listed in the WHOIS directory.

There is also a new law in Europe the EU General Data Protection Regulation that allows people to remain more or less anonymous on the WHOIS. You can still contact them if they have their domain name registered with GoDaddy by scrolling to the bottom of our WHOIS lookup and choosing the option to Contact Domain Holder.

How Do I Transfer My Domain Name To A New Registrar

If you wish to move your domain name from one ICANN-accredited registrar to another, you may initiate the transfer process by contacting the registrar to which you wish to transfer the name. Note that there are certain situations that can prevent a domain name from being transferred, such as if it is subject to a 60-day Change of Registrant lock. See FAQ #8 for more information. Absent any valid reasons a transfer request cannot be processed, the registrar will confirm your intent to transfer your domain name using the Initial Authorization for Registrar Transfer form. If you do not respond or return the form to the registrar, your transfer request will not be processed. Please note that as of 25 May 2018, if the gaining registrar cannot access registration data for a name subject to a transfer, then the gaining registrar is not required to obtain the Form of Authorization from the Transfer Contact.

Your current registrar must also verify your intent to transfer using the Confirmation of Registrar Transfer Request form. for more information on Transferring Your Domain Name.

Guide To Moving Godaddy Domain To Another Account:

To get started with moving a GoDaddy domain to another account, you need the following details from the buyer:

  • GoDaddy Account number
  • Registered email address on GoDaddy
  • Once you have it:

    • Select the domain which you wish to transfer.

This will bring up domain settings and here you need to scroll down, find and click Transfer domain to another GoDaddy account

It will display a pop-up where you need to enter the other GoDaddy account holders login ID and registered email address.

Make sure to click on Keep the current nameservers for these domains or else GoDaddy will change the DNS to point to GoDaddy servers. If you have a site on that domain and its hosted on any 3rd party server, the site will start showing an error.

Enter the details and click Next:

Since you are not using the domain anymore, I recommend you select the second option which says: Use details from specified customer account. This will update the domain registration information using the new domain holders details.

On the next page, you will have to approve the TOS. Do so, and click Next.

This will save and update the changes. Now, if you go to your domain manager page, it will show the domain status as Changing accounts.

Now, check your email from GoDaddy and approve the domain transfer:

Similarly, the person who is receiving the domain name, will also receive an email and they have to approve receiving the domain name by clicking the link on email.

    Registrar Transfer Example In Action

In this example, Ill explain how to perform a registrar transfer from GoDaddy to HostGator. Before you begin, it is strongly advised that you create a backup of your website.

    Step 1: Unlock the Domain

The party making the transfer must first unlock the domain for transfer in their GoDaddy account.

    • Sign in to your GoDaddy account
    • In the Visit My Account tab select Domains and click Manage.
    • Under the Settings tab find the Lock tab, click Manage and check Off.

Your domain should now be unlocked.

Step 2: Request an Authorization Code

The party making the transfer must request an EPP/Authorization Code. This will be provided to the receiving party, and it lets the releasing registrar know that the party making the transfer has authorized this action.

    • Using the same Settings tab locate the heading and click email my code.
    • Provide this code to the receiving party.

Step 3: Initiate the Transfer at the Receiving Registrar

    • This step should be completed by the receiving party.
    • Visit HostGators domain transfer page& initiate the transfer by entering the domain name.
    • Checkout and enter the EPP/authorization code received from GoDaddy.

    Step 4: Approve the Transfer

    • This step should be completed by the party transferring the domain out of their account.
    • Log back into your GoDaddy account and navigate to the domains page.
    • In the green menu bar find Domains -> Transfers
    • Select the appropriate domain and click Accept.

Can I Make Changes To A Domain While Its Being Transferred

You cannot make any changes to a domain name when its actively in the transfer process.

    This means youre unable to:

    • Update nameservers.
    • Change the WHOIS registration information.
    • Renew the domain registration.

If you must make one of those edits, youll need to contact the originating registrar with a request to cancel the transfer. Otherwise, youll need to wait the standard 5-7 business days for the process to finish so you can make your edits.

Transferring From One Registrar To Another

The exact steps youll need to take will vary depending on which registrar your domain is currently registered with and where the domain is being transferred to, but it will consist of these essential steps:

    1. Disable WHOIS/domain privacy.

The new registrar will need to verify who owns the domain name, which wont be possible if you have WHOIS privacy enabled so make sure that privacy setting has been switched off.

    2. Ensure admin email is up-to-date.

Double-check that the domains current registrar has the most up-to-date administrative email address so theyll be able to contact its owner during the transfer process. Note that changing this field can result in a 60-day transfer lock on the domain , so having an outdated admin email could delay the transfer process.

    3. Unlock the domain.

The domain likely has a transfer lock applied to prevent unwanted or accidental transferring of the domain. In this case, it will need to be unlocked.

    4. Get the transfer authorization code.

This is like a password that, in theory, should only be accessible by the true owner of a domain name. Some registrars may use a different term, like EPP key, secret code or auth code.

    5. Request a domain transfer.

Have the new domain owner request a domain transfer. This will typically involve purchasing an additional year of registration, which will begin once all the remaining time on the domain name is used up. The authorization code from step 4 will be needed in order to request a transfer.
