Switching Domain From Squarespace To Webflow
Ive had a squarespace account for the last year but Im using webflow now. Im just about finishing up my site and want to be able to keep using the same domain. Is there a way for me to switch it over?
Hi Jess, did you happen to purchase your domain through a domain registrar or through Squarespace directly?
If you purchased through Squarespace, there is unfortunately an intermediate step youll need to take, but in the long term its much more beneficial for you. You will need to:
Once your domain is transferred over, you can then follow the directions for linking it to your Webflow site, which you can find here:
Because Squarespace doesnt allow transferring a domain less than 60 days after registration, its not possible for us to create a test domain and walk through all the steps and create a tutorial for you. But it would be AMAZING if you documented the steps you took and posted them here for future ex-Squarespacers to benefit from!
Hi, I am having same problem here as well. What if I have the domain more than 60 days after registration with Squarespace? Do I still need register Godaddys service as the intermediate step?
I Mapped My Domain And Now My Email Isn’t Working Can You Fix This
Unfortunately it’s not possible for Squarespace to change your domain settings, as we don’t host this. When you map your domain to Squarespace, the CNAME points the ‘www’ to us, but we don’t offer e-mail services, so your MX records should not point to us.
To receive email on your domain, there should be a setup two records similar to the following:
mail.yourdomain.com A < your provider’s email server IP>
yourdomain.com MX mail.yourdomain.com
These two records first create a named system that’s responsible for your email, then create a record that forwards your email through that system. Your provider’s email server IP is going to vary per provider — and you should contact your provider to ensure everything is configured properly.
Loss Of Brand Awareness
Brand awareness is something that you have more control over when changing your domain name. If you have frequent direct traffic site visitors , you risk losing them when you change your domain name. They may type in your old domain and when the site doesnt load, think that youve gone offline permanently.
You can mitigate this risk by using redirects and messaging. Implement a 301 redirect from your old domain to your new one for a period of at least 120 days.
Many site visitors will catch on and notice the new domain name, but you cant bank on everyone being observant. Instead, think about including a message or pop-up on your site announcing your new domain name or rebrand to make sure they see it and use the new domain name moving forward.

When youre comfortable that youve ironed out most of the issues associated with your site, you can go ahead and publish it.
Congratulations, youve learned how to make a website with Squarespace!

How To Create Custom Email For Squarespace
There are a couple of ways that you can create your custom email for your Squarespace website. It all depends on what is currently going on. If youve already got a custom email address, then you can still use it with Squarespace. If you dont already have a custom email address, then you might need to use the integration with Google Workspace , to set up a new account.
Set Up The Domain Name At The New Registrar
At this point, youll need to set up the domain name at your new registrar. Namecheap is an industry standard in domain names, and I highly recommend them.
Right in Namecheaps main menu is a link called Transfer to Us. Hover over that and select Transfer Domain.
Enter the name of the domain to transfer and follow the instructions. Youll be asked to enter the transfer key that you got from Squarespace.
Note: This is a professional review site that receives compensation when you purchase through the affiliate links at no extra cost to you. I personally test or research each product before endorsing it. This site is independently owned and the opinions expressed here are my own.

Squarespace Domain Downgrades Cancellations & Refunds
The general rule with Squarespace is that if you fail to make your payments, you get 45 days before the domain is rereleased to the registrar. That means you wont be able to use it any longer, unless you buy it again and no one else has bought it before you.
If you downgrade from an annual plan to monthly billing, your free domain will expire at the end of the yearly billing cycle. For refunds, you get a 5 day grace period, but after that you cant get money back on a bought domain.
Deleting your Squarespace site gives you the option to renew your domain, or let it expire. You can also transfer a domain you bought with Squarespace to another provider.
In short, Squarespace is pretty accommodating if you leave their service. Thats always a nice surprise with website builders.
One Year Of Free Domain For Yearly Plans

- Squarespace domains are set to auto-renew by default. You can disable the option in your Domains panel.
- After the first year, youll need to pay $20 per year for the domain. Depending on the TLD, there may also be taxes to pay on top.
Finally, if you want to buy additional domains, they will cost you $20 $70 each, depending on the TLD . Having multiple domains point to the same site can be useful for covering misspellings or translated versions of your domain name, for example.
About Squarespace TLDs TLD stands for Top Level Domain.Theyre also known as domain extensions. Squarespace lets you choose from more than 200 of them. The most common, like .com or .net are cheaper than specialised ones like .art , .software or .pizza .
Evaluate Long Term Costs
In addition to the upfront costs of getting a domain name, consider costs like taxes and renewal fees. Some registrars charge increased renewal fees when your domain registration expires, and depending on where you live, your domain name may be subject to state and local taxes.
Remember to budget for your domain name alongside other potential startup costs, like website hosting or creating a logo for your business.
