Redirecting 301 Or 302

How to Redirect a Domain in cPanel

Hi,I think the part of this question has been already discussed, but not exactly the same, I think.My site requires authentication for member page. When a user try to go to member area, we redirect to 3rd party to do the authentication.1. user clicks a link to www.mysite.com/member/contents.html2. www.myauthenticate.com/login?h=somehashuniquehash454859428778545 3. login success => redirect back to www.mysite.com/member/contents.htmlWe are doing it 302, temporary redirect. But moz crawler error seems to suggest we should do it 301.So my question is:A. Should we do it 301???B. If we do 301, what happens to myauthenticate.com? since it has hashtag, I am afraid it could create a lot of duplicate contents on myauthenticate.com side…Thank you so much for your help in advance…

Avoid Making Redirect Mistakes

Avoid Redirect Chains and Loops

Redirection chains are harmful to the SEO ranking of your page because Google can delay their crawling of your website. As a result, you can lose some link equity, and the loading time of your loading page can increase.

The best way to bypass this is to avoid the connection to a URL that is already redirecting to another URL. And you should regularly audit your actual redirects.

Avoid Internal Redirects

Redirecting a website could hurt your SEO practice, with the internal links pointing to URLs that are redirected somewhere else.

While changing the URL of your page, you can forget to update the internal links to connect to the new location. But its crucial to have those URLsso make sure you enter your site and update the destination of the internal links. This is required to avoid the redirection of website visitors and search engines when there is no need.

Dont Use 302 Redirects Unless the Move of the Domain Is Temporary

You can redirect a domain with code 302 only if you plan to bring the old page back. But you can also use this code to test out a new page and collect customer feedback while the rankings of the original page are untouched.

How Does The Redirect Work

Setting a redirect does not delete your current website or any of its files. You can add hosting back to the domain in the future at any time, which then displays your original content.

Any page you visit on your current site is forwarded to the page on the redirected site. For example, let’s say you’re redirecting example.com to dreamhost.com. If you visit example.com/contact.html, the URL changes to dreamhost.com/contact.html.

Redirect A Domain Through Your Web Hosting Company

To redirect a domain from your web host, youll need to login to the cPanel or similar interface first and then change the appropriate settings. This type of domain redirection is best used for cases when you want to redirect an entire website to a new domain and your domain registration company doesnt offer free redirection.

Keep in mind that different hosts use different panels and user interfaces, so the steps may slightly change on a case-by-case basis. However, generally speaking, the process of redirecting a domain through your web host goes as follows:

  • Login to your web hosting accounts cPanel
  • In the Domains section of the cPanel home screen, click Redirects.
  • Under Add Redirect, select the redirection type: Permanent 301 or Temporary 302. This instruction helps search engines like Google and Bing understand how to treat this redirect.
  • Select the domain, and then type the web page that you want to redirect.
  • In the redirects to text box, type the destination web page.
  • Click the Add button

Now, whenever a visitor goes to your websites old domain, theyll directly be redirected to the new domain!

What Is A Website Redirect

A website redirect points your old URL to a new page. When anyone types in or clicks on that original URL theyll be taken to the page you set the redirect up to instead. It ensures visitors dont end up on a 404 page and instead find something relevant to what they were originally looking for. And it keeps you from losing the value of any links youve built to that pagewhich is important for search engine optimization , as well as the user experience of anyone that clicks one of those links.

Knowing how to set up a redirect is a valuable skill for anyone that runs a website. You can implement redirects on a page-by-page basis, or at the domain level.

Why Use A 301 Redirect

Setting up a 301 Domain Redirect in cPanel

To redirect a site permanently, one should use a 301 redirect. This type of redirect is best for SEO purposes and also informs the search engines that the site has moved permanently. If you change your domain name and want to point to a different URL, a 301 redirect is your best choice.

This is also the preferred type of redirect to use when configuring an SSL certificate where you want to redirect your site visitors from a non-secure address like http://example.com to a secure address like https://example.com.The 301 Redirect setup steps are different based on how your website was built. For WordPress users, a Plugin can be used to configure the 301 Redirect . Or you may contact us for Professional Services.Once a 301 redirect is set, the update should be instantaneous.

Note: This is only recommended for advanced users. An error could result in your website being disabled. Please also ensure that you have a hosting plan, otherwise, the .htaccess editor will not be visible on your dashboard.

The .htaccess editor is a powerful tool with which advanced users can customize their website. When using this tool, your first step will always be to select the domain and directory where you are applying the changes.

  • Log in to your account Hosting Summary.
  • On the left pane, click on .htaccess Editor.
  • Add one of the following code snippets into your .htaccess file (based on what you want to do.

    You Have Several Options

  • The biggest domain registrars such as GoDaddy and NameCheap offer free redirect services for any domain you register through them. However those services often don’t work very well. GoDaddy has long term known issues where redirects don’t work consistently for all clients. I’ve also never seen a registrar offer redirects that support HTTPS.
  • Point the domain name to your existing hosting account. Your host may or may not allow additional domains. They are usually called “add-on domains”. You can usually configure additional domains to redirect. It may involve .htaccess or it may not, depending on your host. Depending on your host, you may or may not be able to get a HTTPS certificate for the redirecting domain.
  • Use a third party service to do the redirects.
  • Redirect A Domain Through Your Domain Registrar

    If youve registered your domain through Domain Name Sanity, you should be able to enable Domain Forwarding through your account. If you have any issues, please contact our 24×7 support team for assistance.

  • Login to your Account at and click My Domains.
  • In the left navigation, click Domain Forwarding
  • Tick the box to Enable Domain Forwarding, enter the URL that you want the domain to forward to in the box, then click Set Domain Forwarding
  • Thats it. Within 15-30 minutes, all visitors to your domain will now be redirected to your new target web page. If you have any issues, please reach out to our support team for assistance.

    Redirect Url To Another Domain

    Let us say you want to redirect requests from website www.example1.com/sample-page to www.example2.com/sample-page, then add the following code to your NGINX configuration file. Replace the domain names as per your requirement.

    http      }...}

    In the above configuration, we create a server a block for source domain, example1.com, to listen to all incoming requests to this domain. For our page /sample-page, we create a location block and add a proxy_pass directive to pass the request to destination domain example2.com.

    If you specify the proxy_pass directive without a URI then it will append the URL stub to destination domain also. In this case example1.com/sample-page => example2.com/sample-page

    If you specify the final path in proxy_pass, then NGINX will redirect only to that path. For example, here is how to redirect example1.com/sample-page => example2.com/new-sample

    http      }...}

    In the above case, we have specified the full destination path example2.com/new-sample in proxy_pass directive.

    You can also use IP address of destination domain, instead of using domain name, if you want. Here is an example, to redirect to different IP address 54.34.23.21

    http      }...}

    In fact you can also use proxy_pass to pass request to servers running on other port numbers such as 8000.

    http      }...}

    What Is Masking And Why Are We Removing It

    Web Forwarding with masking, means that visitors to a given websitewill only see thedomainname they typed in the address bar of their browser, rather than the website or page they are being forwarded to . The URL is cloaking the real address of the website or page, of the server its hosted on. Problem Forwarding using masking does not resolve in most cases because most servers today block masked forwards from occurring. Also, with masking, visitors are unable to bookmark or share specific pages of a site . Additionally, it will have a negative impact on SEO. Search engines are actively punishing websites with cloaked URLs and flagging them for duplicate content. We are removing this feature in an effort to continually improve on our products as well as your experiences with them.

    Is It Possible To Have Emails At A Registered Domain Without Hosting

    How To Redirect An IP To A Domain & Configure Domain Redirects In ...

    The hosting for my website will expire at the end of this month. I dont really wish to stay with my current host their interface stinks and I dont use the hosting part of the service, anyway.

    Id like to keep my email address there, though I fully understand that without hosting, I wont be able to keep email on the server . Before I can decide on how to move forward with my domain, I need to know:

    • 1No, you cant. If you want to use their mail service, you need to renew your hosting with them. Or you can migrate your email service to Gmail, but as I know Gmail is not free anymore. If you dont like hosting with them, you can migrate your hosting to other hosting provider, like asphostportal.com. Their hosting plan comes wtih email account. Douglas ThomasJul 8 2015 at 6:51

    Sorry you cant. While you can point the MX record to googles mail server it will get rejected since Google doesnt not recognize the domain. You can host your email using Googles Apps, its used to be free but its $50/year now. Other email hosting service will also work but I dont know if there is any free ones available.

    You may also consider moving your domain registration elsewhere, some domain registration company, like 1and1, offers free email hosting service and forwarding with domain purchase so you dont need separate web hosting for your email.

    Another way is to get a cheap VPS server, setup web server, email server etc.. and do everything yourself.
