How do You find Your Computer DOMAIN name [DNS – Domain Name System]

Domain names function on the Internet in a manner similar to a physical address in the physical world. Each part of the domain name provides specific information. These pieces of information enable web browsers to locate the web page. The naming system is closely regulated in order to prevent confusion or duplicate addresses. As demand increased exponentially, a new Internet Protocol version, or IPv6, was created to expand the number of domain names available.

In Microsoft Windows terminology, a domain is a group of networked computers and resources managed by an Active Directory server. Businesses typically use Active Directory domains to manage logins and access to shared resources like servers and networked printers across multiple computers. If you acquire a new computer for your business, you might need to connect it to your existing Active Directory setup and the appropriate local domain.

At times, you might want to disjoin a computer from a domain and have it work independently.

How To Find The Domain Name Of A Server

Im having trouble finding the domain name of my schools server, I read another question similar to this but their commands didnt work.

I tried to use nslookup and then when I was prompted I entered server. I get the following output. I dont understand where the domain name is stored. Im using a wired LAN connection from my university.

Default Server: 127.0.01Address: 127.0.0.1#53Default Server: ::1Address: ::1#53
  • please would you clarify and then when I was prompted I entered server , you do know the server ip right? thxJan 21 16 at 0:28
  • yes I do know the servers ip

You should nslookup the IP. It will return. Example.

$ nslookup>   bro-ns-01Server:         10.100.1.2Address:        10.100.1.2#53Name:   bro-ns-01.angelsofclockwork.netAddress: 10.100.1.2>   10.100.1.2Server:         10.100.1.2Address:        10.100.1.2#532.1.100.10.in-addr.arpa name = bro-ns-01.angelsofclockwork.net.>

Im assuming youre using dnsmasq or otherwise, because your server address is set to your localhost. If thats the case, it should still be transparent enough to pull the information.

You could also look at /etc/resolve.conf if youre on the same network. Youre more than likely being given a reverse DNS entry that has the same domain suffix of static servers.

$ cat /etc/resolv.conf   generated by /usr/sbin/dhclient-scriptsearch angelsofclockwork.net.nameserver 10.100.1.2

Selecting Your Logon Context In Windows Xp

If you have Windows XP on a business network , your logon screen will look something like the picture below. By default, the logon context is hidden until you click the Options button.

When you click Options, you’ll see this:

Notice there is a drop-down arrow, which you can click to see the list of all domains available on your network. One of the entries in the list will be the name of the computer you’re on. Windows helpfully lets you know by putting “this computer” on the same line. Everything else in the list is a domain managed by a Domain Controller. You will never see the name of other computer workstations or servers here.

Below is an example of a computer named WORKSTATION4, which is on a network with two domains, named JDFOXMICRO and LAB.

In the example above, if the user kgibson only has an account on the LAB domain, he will have to select that in the Log on to box to be able to log on.

    What Is A Domain Name

    New computer users often confuse domain names with universal resource locators, or URLs, and Internet Protocol, or IP, addresses. This confusion is understandable. It is worth learning the differences between them because these terms are ubiquitous. It is also helpful to be able to use terms correctly when communicating to technicians or other people within a professional organization.

    This naming convention is analogous to a physical address system. People find web pages in a manner similar to the way that they use maps to find physical locations. If the Internet is like a phone book, and a web page is like a physical building, the URL would be the precise street address of that building. The IP address would be like the car that travels to its destination. There are also other useful metaphors for understanding this relationship.

    How To Leave A Domain

    If your computer is a member of an Active Directory domain, you can disconnect it from the domain and make it part of a local work group, a simpler alternative to a domain that can even encompass only your one computer.

    First, log in to the computer with an administrator account. If you don’t have the right credentials, ask your IT department for assistance. Once you’re logged in, hold down the Windows key on your keyboard, and press X to open the Windows Tools menu. Click “System” in the menu.

    Within the “System” menu, click “Change Settings.” On the “Computer Name” tab, click “Change.” Choose “Workgroup” instead of “Domain,” and type the name of a new or existing work group. Click “OK,” and restart the computer for the changes to take effect.

    You can also use this same configuration screen to join a computer to a domain. You may need to work with whoever manages your domain controller to get the necessary permissions and accounts set up to connect your computer to a new domain and log in with your user account.

    Find The Information You Need In Whois Records

    If the domain owner is interested in selling their domain, their contact information is typically available in the Whois records. However, youll sometimes find that the information youre looking for has been blocked by the domain provider for privacy reasons.

    If the domain that youre interested in is being sold by someone who is looking for a willing buyer, the steps outlined above is the easiest way to start negotiating a purchase. But if the seller has hidden their contact information or is not interested in selling their domain, dont despair! There are workarounds for those who are interested in a domain that has already been registered.

    What Is A Computer Name

    How to Find Out Where Your Domain Name is Registered

    The computer name, also called device name orhost name, is used to identify a computer in a network. For computers with a pre-installed operating system, the random working name of a computer is already predefined. However, if the computer is part of a computer network, each device needs a unique and unambiguous name, because double naming in a computer network can interfere with data transfers, IT infrastructure, and overall problem-solving.

    Thats why its sometimes necessary to change the computer name manually. However, this can only be done if you know how to find out the name of your computer.

    Remember that the computer name isnt identical with the user name or IP address. While multiple user accounts may exist on a device, the computer name is the same for all users of the device. The IP address can be thought of as the telephone number of a computer and as with any telephone number it requires a corresponding name. The unique computer name allows you to recognize the computer in a network overview of routers, call it, and then access it via the network.

    What Is A Domain Name Registrar

    Domain Registrars are companies that can register and maintain domain name information for customers. That is accredited by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers .

    Any place where one can register a domain name must use a domain registrar. Domain registrars make sure that there are no multiple registrations of identical domain names. Domain name registrars are also accountable for keeping the attached contact information current for the domain names registered through them. That protects the person that purchased the domain name from third-party attempts to steal said domain name.

    After you purchase a domain name from a registrar, you are capable of the following administrative actions:

    • Manage the contact information on the registration entry.
    • Manage the nameservers that your domain uses.
    • Create a Secure Space by adding an SSL/TLS to it.

    Note:

    Although we often refer to registering domain names as purchasing and owning them, the fact is that registries own all of their domain names, and registrars only offer the opportunity to reserve domain names for as long as the customer keeps paying for that reservation.

    In case you have failed to pay for your domain renewal in time, keep in mind that many registrars honor up to 45 day Auto-Renew Grace period which allows you to redeem an expired domain name.

    Who Should Control My Domain Name Registration

    Your domain name is one of the most important parts of your online presence. It is your address on the Internet, and points to your digital home base: your company website.

    The domain name system is not terribly complex, but its just complex enough that not everyone understands how it all works. For this reason, many organizations turn over all control of their domain name to an agency or web firm to manage. This has some pros and cons and Id like to offer a brief overview of how domain names work and then offer some perspective on who should control your domain.

    A domain name is an address that defines a realm of authority on the Internet. It can be thought of like a physical address for your office. Your address is where mail is sent and where people drive if they want to visit your office. A domain is similar. If someone wants to visit your website, that person will use your domain name to access it. Your domain name points to your website just as your physical address points to your office.
