Once you have gone through the pre-transfer checklist, you’re now ready to transfer your domain! Please make sure to have your EPP code handy.

Step 1: Check for possible domain transfer issues

There are two ways to check your domain for possible issues – the Customer Portal and Front-of-Site.

Customer Portal

Click Domains from the left-side menu.

Click the Transfer a Domain button.

Enter the domain you wish to transfer to HostGator, then click Search.

Enter the domain you wish to transfer to HostGator, then click Transfer.

When attempting to transfer your domain, HostGator automatically checks several possible issues that may prevent your domain from transferring. You’ll receive a screen like this one:

This list checks for all of the things that HostGator can check directly.

Is your domain unlocked? If the answer is no, you will need to contact your current registrar and request to have your domain unlocked.

Is Domain Privacy disabled? If Domain Privacy is enabled, it will prevent HostGator from verifying your domain ownership. This will need to be disabled by your current registrar.

Is the domain older than 60 days? ICANN regulations prevent the transfer of a domain that is less than 60 days old. HostGator will not be able to transfer a domain until 60 days have elapsed.

Click the How To Fix button.

In the popup box that appears, click the button to send a confirmation email to your administrator email account.

Initiate A Transfer With Your New Host

Log into your new host or registrar now, and look for an option to transfer your domain. It should be somewhere on your dashboard or management panel :

Prepare Your Domain For Transfer

Before you can transfer your domain to Shopify, you need to unlock your domain and get a transfer authorization code from your domain provider.

When you transfer a domain to Shopify, your domain’s A record and CNAME record are set to Shopify’s default domain records. If additional records are present on your domain before the transfer, then make a copy of those records to add to the Domains section of your Shopify admin after the transfer. For example, you might need to add an MX record to reconnect your domain to an email hosting service.

The process for preparing a domain for transfer varies by third-party domain provider. If you have trouble preparing your domain for transfer, then contact your third-party domain provider. Shopify Support can’t log in to your third-party domain account for you, even if you give your explicit permission.

Make a copy of any domain records that you might need to configure your domain after the transfer.

Click Unlock next to the domain that you want to transfer. You might need to approve this choice by clicking on a link in a confirmation email.

Click Transfer this domain, Transfer out, or similar to get a transfer authorization code from your provider.

Retrieve The Transfer Code

Once the status is set to Disabled, a link labelled AUTH/INFO will appear. Clicking on this link will open a window that contains your AUTH/INFO code .

The code will be requested by your new registrar to complete the transfer process. You can verify the details with your provider.

Make sure to copy and paste the code as opposed to typing it by hand, since some characters are easily confused.
