How To Find Out Domain Registrar

Don't Miss

Why Should Registrants Still Utilize Whois Privacy Services

How to Find Out Who Owns a Domain Name

The WHOIS database lists information about each domain registration online and is open to the public. In regards to Registrant information, the amount that is displayed publicly may differ based on a number of factors, including:

  • The specific domain extension
  • The type of Registrant used for the registration

This means that malicious entities are still able to quickly access this public directory and survey for potential pieces of information to exploits. By replacing your information through a privacy service, your information is effectively blocked from public access.

Identify Your Domain Host

A domain host is an internet service that manages your domain name, such as, example.com. Domain hosts use Domain Name System records to connect your domain name with email, websites, and other web services. Popular domain hosts include GoDaddy, enom, DreamHost, and 1& 1 IONOS, to name a few.

Google Cloud uses DNS records to set up online services. For example, to use your domain with Google Workspace, add DNS records with your domain host.

What To Do If Your Domain Name Expires

In case your domain name expires, you should contact the registrar that provided your domain name registration services for possible renewal options available to you. To determine your current registrar, conduct a WHOIS search by visiting whois.icann.org, as we already explained in the post.

Note: Keep all your important business information permanently recorded somewhere safe. That includes your registrar name, login username, password, and domain management somewhere with your most important business papers. Ensure that all your information is properly added when registering your domain name.

Tips To Choose The Right Domain Name

Keep it simple. If your domain name is too long it will be hard for visitors to remember, read, and type. Make it easy to spell and try to avoid using numbers and hyphens.

Choose a domain extension that goes with your website. The domain ending you choose will tell customers more about your business. For example, .co.uk shows that youre UK based.

Use keywords that match your business or service. This will help customers find your site. For example, if youre a wedding photographer from Texas then weddingphotostexas.com might be a good option.

How To Find Out Who The Domain Owner Is

Youve spent time brainstorming domain names. Youve tried different domain suggestion tools. And youve finally figured out the perfect name.

But when you go to register the domain name youre set on, you find that someone has already claimed it. What a disappointment.

Before you give up on that perfect name and start the whole process again from scratch, know there might still be hope.

Registered domain names are sometimes still availableif you know how to find the owner.

People invest in domain names for a number of different reasons. Sometimes, its to start their own website at that domain. Sometimes its purely for investment purposes. And in a few cases, it may be for a website idea that either never comes to fruition, or that falls off the owners radar over time.

If the website youre interested in isnt being actively used and updated, then the owner may be happy to hear from an interested buyer. And even if the owner is clearly using the domain name right now, if youre willing to spend enough to make a sale worth it to them you may still have a chance.

In both cases, you should anticipate spending more for the domain name than if you went with something no one else owns yet. But if youre really set on that domain name, its worth trying your chances.

    How To Find Your Registrar

    • It’s likely you have received invoices for your domain name by email it is best to search your email history for these emails to find out the registrar/company you are using. Try searching for your full domain name as a starting point. You should have an email from them with the original account creation and billing information which you can use to log in and gain access.
    • Failing this you can do a WHOIS lookup, the easiest way to do this is through the lookup website , enter your top-level domain name, for example, “mydomain.com” and click search. Look for the Registrar information this shows the company that the domain is currently hosted with. If this looks foreign check the Admin, Technical and Billing contacts and email addresses for any company name that looks familiar. You may also find a colleague’s details which you can use to track things down further.
    • Some WHOIS lookups don’t return the results you might be looking for, instead, they return a link to a provider website where you can then search for the specific details. For example, most Australian .au domain names are like this. In the public WHOIS results, you might receive a message like “Visit whois.ausregistry.com.au for Web-based WhoIs” which requires you to go to that website to perform the search and get the full results. It just depends where your domain is registered and how much information they make publicly available.

Set Up The Blank / Naked Version Of Your Domain

When we think of the web, we tend to assume all websites start with the www prefix. However, the chances are you probably visit websites on a regular basis without using www at all.

For example, you can visit LCN by either using www.lcn.com or simply lcn.com the latter address without the www is often called a naked domain.

What is actually happening here is lcn.com is merely redirecting to our proper www.lcn.com address. However, without setting this up, users will just get an error page when visiting your sites naked domain variant and this isnt a good experience for anyone.

lcn.com naked domain redirecting to www.lcn.com

You should be able to do this easily enough at most domain providers. Naturally, here at LCN its super straight-forward.

Simply find your domain name from the Domains section of your account, look for DNS settings, and from here selectAdd an A record.

When adding your new A record, ensure you leave the hostname field blank, and add the IP address for your server .

As with everything at LCN, if you get stuck, just give us a call or get us on LiveChat and well have the problem fixed in minutes.

When Do You Need To Buy A Domain Name

According to Verisign, there were over 367 million domain registrations close to the second quarter of 2021, a 0.7% decrease from last year.

While domain name buying is slowing down, this shouldnt placate you. Its much harder to buy a domain from its owner than register it yourself. So, you should buy your desired domain name as soon as you know it, as you dont want someone else to take it.

If you have an idea for your domain, you are already on the right path to choosing a domain name.

When buying your domain name, consider purchasing any other names you want. That includes domains for your:

    • Product lines
    • Customer support program
    • Customer loyalty program

If you want to use a domain in the future but not immediately, you can install a coming soon page on your domain with a WordPress extension like SeedProd. You can also park your domain. Domain parking is widespread, as ICANN estimates 52.95% of domains are currently parked.

    Initial Prices And Renewal Pricing

Most domain registrars require you to pay one year at a time, or you can choose to pay for multiple years to get a discount. The price for your first year of registration is often lower than the rate for subsequent years. So, while a low year one rate might catch your eye, youll want to make sure that the subsequent renewal prices are both affordable and in line with those of other registrars.

    Check Your Billing Records

Checking your billing records is probably the easiest, and therefore, the first method you should use. Typically, your domain name registrar is who you bought your domain name from. If you dont remember who that registrar is, try searching your email archives for records regarding your domain name registration . The domain registrar should be listed on your invoice.

Its imperative that you keep your domain registrar up to date regarding changes to your email address and/or contact information. Registrars send renewal notifications to the email address they have listed.

Identify The Owner And Find A Broker

First, you need to go to the website and find the owners contact details. Generally, there are three possible situations here:

  • A domain trader owns the domain. A domain trader is someone who registers and sells domains for money.
  • Someone owns the domain, but they dont use it or have parked it
  • Someone owns the domain and is actively using it
  • Once youve figured out which situation youre in, its time to consider hiring a broker. A broker will act on your behalf and ensure the seller doesnt take advantage of you. Some brokers take a percentage of the money you pay for the domain, while others charge a flat or hourly fee.

Youll likely need a broker if you dont know who owns the domain or if someone else is using it .

Register Your Domain And Verify Your Ownership

Next, youll need to register your domain. Your registrar will do most of the heavy work for you behind the scenes, and the process may take several days.

Youll need to confirm your details to ensure your registration is complete. Depending on your registrar, you may need to verify your email address or phone number.

Additionally, you may need to provide extra verification to purchase TLDs like .edu. If this is the case, youll need to follow the registrars instructions to verify your identity.

Remove The Registrar Lock On Your Domain

How To Find A Good Domain name

Now that youve checked that the admin email address for your domain is correct, youre ready to start transferring your domain.

First, check whether your domain has a registrar lock on it. A registrar lock is a status code assigned to the domain that prevents the domain being transferred to another registrar. If your domain is locked then youll need to unlock it before you can transfer it.

The easiest way to see if your domain is locked is to login to your current registrars control panel and view the details of your domain name. If your domain is locked then youll probably see a message or icon to this effect . Often you can click the message or icon to unlock your domain. If youre unsure how to check for a registrar lock, or how to remove a lock, ask your registrar for help.

You can also check for a domain lock by looking at the domains WHOIS record . Look for a Status line that says something like Registrar-Lock or clientTransferProhibited.

Why Is Some Of Registrant Data Still Public

WHOIS can trace its roots back to 1982 when a protocol for a directory was established by ARPANET users. Initially, the directory simply listed contact information that was requested by anyone transmitting data across the ARPANET.

However, as the internet became available to more users, WHOIS began to serve the need of different stakeholders that ranged from Registrants, governments and corporations. For decades WHOIS data was open to the public to ensure that all stakeholders, from Registrant and domain investors to government agencies and corporations are able to quickly determine who owns a domain name online
