Create Dhcp Static Mappings
If you have any static IPs you would like to set for some of your devices such as your server, you have the option to specify a hostname. This hostname will be used instead of the hostname set on the device itself if the DHCP Static Mappings option is set.
You also have the ability to set a different domain name for the static mapping for the device if you so desire. It is likely unnecessary in most home network environments, but perhaps it is useful if you are hosting multiple domains on your network.
Domain Names And Ip Addresses
An Internet Protocol, or IP, address is different than a domain name. The IP address is an actual set of numerical instructions. It communicates exact information about the address in a way that is useful to the computer but makes no sense to humans. The domain name functions as a link to the IP address. Links do not contain actual information, but they do point to the place where the IP address information resides. It is convenient to think of IP addresses as the actual code and the domain name as a nickname for that code. A typical IP address looks like a string of numbers. It could be 188.8.131.52, for example. However, humans cannot understand or use that code. To summarize, the domain name is a part of the URL, which points to the IP address.
Use The Right Domain Name Extensions
When you choose your domain name extension, you can be sure of one thing: .com is still the best.
According to research from Domain Name Stat, 37% of all domains have the .com extension.
Why? Well, .com is the most familiar and easiest to remember.
While there are many successful websites with a .net and .org, your website will probably do better if it has a .com extension. Its the safest bet.
Our advice: Go with .com. If thats taken, try .net or .org. If these are taken too, youd be better off brainstorming a new domain name. And oh! Avoid those weird extensions like .club, .space, .pizza and so on.

Make Sure Its Easy To Type
Think of some of the most popular websites in the world. What comes to mind?
Google, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Yahoo, CNN
One big thing they have in common is that theyre all easy to spell.
Your visitors should be able to type your domain name without a problem. If you have to explain the spelling more than once for it to be understood, its too complicated!
The last thing you want is for the potential visitors to mistype your domain and end up on a different website!
Heres an easy way to test this
Tell 10 people your potential domain name and ask them to spell it. If more than a few people struggle to spell it, you need to simplify it.
Avoid Hyphens And Numbers
Remember how your domain name should be easy to spell and pronounce? Hyphens and numbers make it more difficult.
Imagine explaining Facebook if it had a hyphen in there
Have you seen this new site Face-Book? Theres a hyphen in there by the way, between the Face and the Book.
Facebook might not have spread so quickly if that was the case.
The bottom line? Your domain name should be smooth and punchy hyphens and numbers get in the way of that.

Complete the following steps to use the Domain Account Manager to create a local domain on a computer.

How The Locator Finds A Domain Controller
This sequence describes how the Locator finds a domain controller:
On the client , the Locator is started as a remote procedure call to the local Netlogon service. The Locator DsGetDcName application programming interface call is implemented by the Netlogon service.
The client collects the information that’s needed to select a domain controller. Then it passes the information to the Netlogon service by using the DsGetDcName call.

Viewing A List Of All Hostnames
The easiest way to see a list of hostnames for all of your network devices is to go to Leases page by navigating to Services > DHCPv4 > Leases. It will show the MAC addresses, hostnames, IP addresses, online/offline status, and if it is statically mapped. The page is fairly self-explanatory. I am not including a screenshot since I would have to blot out most of my device information .
Now you should be able to refer to devices in your home network by their hostname and domain name !

Setting Up A Dns Server Using Bind
Setting up a name server using BIND is quite straightforward, so I’ll show you how to do so on any computer you might have available for experimentation. This little lab project will show you how to install and configure BIND on your computer as a caching name server, test it, then set it up as a primary name server with a zone file that you can use as a name resolver for your network or just for testing.
Setting up a name server on any GNU/Linux computer you have available is technically possible because it will not interfere with other hosts on the network or their operation. However, you should probably not do this on a computer that you do not own or have the right to modify unless you have explicit permission to do so.

Set Up A Caching Name Server
A caching name server is not an authoritative source for any domain. It simply caches the results of all name resolver requests from the network that it serves to speed up responses to future requests for the same remote host.
Note: The named.conf file is very particular about syntax and especially punctuation. Semicolons are used to delineate the end of an entry and the end of a stanza as well as the end of a line. Be sure to add them in correctly as shown in the samples.
For the initial setup of the caching name server making a couple modifications to the default /etc/named.conf file is necessary, so edit that file using your favorite editor. First, add the IP address of your local test host to the “listen-on port 53” line as shown in Listing 2, below. This enables named to listen on the external IP Address of your host, so that other computers can use it as a name server as well.
Add a “forwarders” line as shown below. This tells your caching DNS server where to obtain IP Addresses when they are not already cached locally. The IP Addresses in the listing below is for the You could use your local ISP or OpenDNS or some other public name server as your forwarder. It is not necessary to define any forwarders and, in that case, BIND would use the Internet root servers as defined in the file /var/named/named.ca to locate the authoritative name servers for domains if no forwarders are defined. But for this exercise, please define the forwarders as I have in Listing 2.
Using The External Domain Name
Another common method to name your internal domain is to name it like your external domain. This can work, but you will need to have and mange two different sets of DNS servers:
For example when users on the Internet try to access your website www.companyname.com, the external DNS name will resolve that to an IP on the public Internet. However, your internal DNS servers will not forward the request to external DNS servers as they are authoritative for the zone companyname.com and hence assume that if they do not know about the server www, then it must not exist. This can be solved by adding a record to the internal DNS telling it where the www server is on the Internet. The same applies to each resource that you publish on the Internet.
As you may clearly see, this can become a management hassle and cause errors, as it is not uncommon to forget changing the internal record when changing the external one or vice-versa.
Note that you may not be using your own servers to host the external DNS zone. Your ISP may do this for your or the hosting service that hosts your website. This complicates things even more as the hosting service may change the IP address of your website without even telling you.

How Do Domains Work

How To Publish Local Domain Names On My Local Network
I’m developing several websites locally, each of them having its own pseudo-domain name, and its Apache VirtualHost:
I’d like to make these websites available to any computer on my local network, which would allow me to test my website on mobile devices .
Is there a way to “publish” a name such as mywebsite.localhost or mywebsite.local to my local network, so that these names would resolve to my computer’s IP address for any computer on the network?
I don’t think I can configure my ISP’s router in any way to act as a DNS server.
While researching, I read about mDNS and Bonjour, but can’t find if they are what I’m looking for, and even less how to make that work.
Any help appreciated!
.localhost is a reserved TLD so you’ll want to change that so you don’t run into issues.
One way to do this would be to run a DNS server or forwarder, such as dnsmasq, make sure all clients are using it and the propagate the zones with the mappings you’re after.This adds quite a bit of overhead and can be problematic if it’s not configured correctly.
Assuming you can control the applications domain names, a quick and easy option is xip.io with no configuration required.
e.g. your server is 192.168.0.23 point a client on the same network subnet to http://192.168.0.23.xip.io/ and it should work.
