What You Can Move

• Domains – If you purchased domains from GoDaddy, you can transfer them to Squarespace. You can transfer multiple domains, whether they’re currently parked, on hold, or connected to an old website.
• Website content – If you created a website using GoDaddy’s Website Builder and want to redesign it on Squarespace, this process involves recreating your site using our tools and moving your domains. It isn’t possible to import a site or its content from GoDaddy.

Connect An Existing Domain

Your second option is to just connect your existing domain to Squarespace. For this option, once again, youre going to click Settings, and then Domains, and now youre going to click Use A Domain I Own. Click on that. Here is an example of a domain I own.

Moving on lets say that you own this domain, but you bought it somewhere else such as GoDaddy or one of those other sites. What youre going to do is just type it in, then click Continue, then youre going to see Connect From Provider. There is also a third option to transfer it to Squarespace so that it is all in one place and you can absolutely do that but this is just the quick and easiest way to connect.

Im going to Connect From Provider. Then you need to select your domain provider from the dropdown. As you can see, we have Namecheap and GoogleDomains I purchased this one from GoDaddy, so Im going to select that and then click Connect Domain. Then this little pop-up is going to appear and all you need to do is click Connect, and its done. It is now connected.

The process will be a bit different depending on what your domain provider is it might not be as easy as GoDaddy just made it for us, but Squarespace generally has instructions for each individual provider. Then, you will see Connection In Progress. Ive always found this to be really quick, so just keep checking in until it is connected.

Whereas, connecting a domain means you will keep the domain in Godaddy but the domain name will point to Squarespace.

Honestly, if you are new to Squarespace, you can just connect your domain instead of transferring it. Once you are familiar with Squarespace and you have made your mind to use Squarespace, you can then transfer your domain from Godaddy to Squarespace.

If you transfer it to Squarespace, many things get easier and less time-consuming. For example, you can point the domain name with just one click. You can renew the domain from the same dashboard.

So, there are many similar advantages. Therefore, if you want to use Squarespace, you should surely transfer the domain name too.

What To Do After Transfer

Once you transfer your domain to Squarespace, here are some things to keep in mind and some of the things that you should do.

• If you want to make it your primary domain, you can head over to Home Menu. Clicks on Settings> Domains. You will see a ? sign somewhere.Click on the question mark sign and search for the domain. You will then see the option of making it primary.
• We recommend you not to add a G-suite account until the transfer is completed.
• You might not receive emails until the transfer process is completed. This is because DNS propagation takes time. You will have to wait until the process is completed.
• Thats pretty much it. Once you make these changes, you can put your focus back on the website.

Configure Registrar Dns Information

If a window labeled DNS Settings opened up and shows you information about your host, records, and required data, youll have to configure your DNS information yourself.

First, log into your domain registrars site. Typically, you will be looking for a domain menu that contains information and configuration options for your domain registration. Youll want to look for a DNS option, and the option to manage those DNS options.

If it seems like Im being a little vague here, its because every domain registrar has a slightly different configuration. The location of the specific menu items and buttons you need to click varies from registrar to registrar.

First, you will need to set the A records. A records are Address records. Heres a little aside about how domain names work :

Computers talk to each other primarily through numbers. Every computer and every server has an IP address that looks something like 127.0.0.1 or 192.168.1.1. When you type a domain name into your web browser, your browser checks a Domain Name System server and looks up the number that is associated with that name.

What youre setting now, through DNS records, is that association. Currently, your domain name points at some web hosting or to some default DNS servers for your hosts parking page. You need to tell the registrar which IP address it should point to namely, Squarespaces IP addresses.

Squarespace has four IP addresses youll need to configure as A records.

How To Move Your Domain Name From Squarespace Without Downtime

Moving a domain name from one registrar to another can be tricky, especially if its something you dont do often. If the domain is attached to a live site, doing it wrong could result in downtime.

I wrote this guide for myself, to remind me of some of the gotchas associated with migrating a domain name from Squarespace, which probably the most frequent type of domain move that I do.

One big thing to realize is that the domain transfer process can take seven days or more to complete from the time you initiate it at the receiving registrar. Make sure you will be around during the whole process!

Another note is that the domain that you want to transfer must have been registered or transferred at least 60 days ago.

Why Is My Domain Not Working On Squarespace

If you can access your built-in domain but not your custom domain, theres probably an issue with your DNS settings. If you use a Squarespace domain, go to your Advanced settings panel, in the Nameservers tab, click Use Squarespace nameservers, and save your changes. If you still have trouble, contact us.

When complete, youll get Domain Transfer Complete email from Namecheap .

Test the website associated with the domain, as well as any email addresses associated with it. At this point, it should be kind of a formality because the nameservers were changed previously.

Because you previously set the domain name at Squarespace to use your new nameservers, the domain will continue to use Namecheaps nameservers after the transfer, and there should be no downtime. And, FreeDNS will automatically switch to Namecheaps default nameservers with the same settings.

Unlock Domain Transfer And Copy Epp Code

The first step before getting the EPP code, used to validate domain transfer between two registrars, is to unlock the domain transfer in the BlueHost interface.

This security ensures that nobody else that got your EPP code is able to transfer on your behalf.

Unlock your domain for transfer, and then copy the EPP code in Bluehost, to paste it later on your new domain registrar to start the transfer.
