What Is A Domain
Windows domains provide network administrators with a way to manage a large number of PCs and control them from one place. One or more servers known as domain controllers have control over the domain and the computers on it.
Domains are generally made up of computers on the same local network. However, computers joined to a domain can continue communicating with their domain controller over VPN or Internet connection. This allows businesses and schools to remotely manage laptops they provide to their employees and students.
When a computer is joined to a domain, it doesnt use its own local user accounts. User accounts and passwords are managed on the domain controller. When you log into a computer on that domain, the computer authenticates your user account name and password with the domain controller. This means you can log in with the same username and password on any computer joined to the domain.
Network administrators can change group policy settings on the domain controller. Each computer on the domain will get these settings from the domain controller and theyll override any local settings users specify on their PCs. All the settings are controlled from a single place. This also locks down the computers. You probably wont be allowed to change many system settings on a computer joined to a domain.

Setting Up The Global Domain Name For Your Network
To set up the global domain name for your home network, go to System > Settings > General. Then enter a hostname for your OPNsense router and the default domain name for your entire network. In the example below, I would be able to access the OPNsense web administration page by going to router.homenetworkguy.com.
Note: It is not necessary to have a real domain name registered if you are just using the domain name internally on your network. However, if you do have a real domain name , you may also use it internally for devices on your network. If you use a real domain name, your local DNS server on your router will know how to resolve names for devices on your local network even if they those hostnames are not included the public DNS records. You only need to add/update the IP addresses of domains/subdomains of public DNS records if you plan to host publicly accessible services on your network.
Even though you do not have to use a real domain name for your local devices, you cannot simply use any domain name you want. The help message says to avoid using local as the domain name since it interferes with the Bonjour protocol, for instance. You should also avoid using domain names of real websites that you plan to visit. I imagine you will not be able to reach such websites since the local DNS server on your router will be trying to resolve that domain name to devices on your local network.

Its not hard to run a DNS Server.
There are plenty of ways to do so on a Linux machine, such as dnsmasq. You may also be interested in setting up Pi-Hole alongside dnsmasq. But there is also an easier way.
PiHole and AdGuard Home are two advertisement blockers that work very similarly. They are both DNS servers that deny access to known advertisers. The Home Assistant community moved to AdGuard because it is easier to use.

Checking The Dns Servers On A Linksys Router

How Does The Domain Name System Work
Think of DNS like Siri on your iPhone. When you say call David, something amazing happens your phone calls David. This isnt magic its a complex process that receives and translates inputs into the desired output for an end user. Its mapping the users input of David with a corresponding output from its internal network.
DNS operates the same way, but with web addresses.
Just like every person has a unique phone number, every website has a unique domain name and subsequent IP address.
The translation from domain name to IP address is known as DNS resolution. The DNS resolution process includes several steps that happen almost instantaneously to resolve the DNS query.
Step 1: A user types a domain name or URL into their browser. The users internet browser issues a query request to the network to render the appropriate web page.
Step 2: A request is sent to the DNS recursor that was assigned to your computer from your Internet Service Provider . If the DNS recursor has the IP address cached, it will return the A record .
Step 3: If the users recursive resolver doesnt have the IP address cached, it will send a query for the IP address to the DNS root nameservers.
Step 4: The root nameservers examine the top-level domain of the query and refer your DNS recursor to the appropriate nameservers based on the TLD.
Step 8: Your DNS recursor returns the A record and renders the web address associated with the IP address to your browser.

Creating the actual DDNS entry is only half the battle when it comes to time saving and convenience. The other half is automating the whole process. Lets look at how to automate DDNS updates at the router and the desktop level.
Well be using a D-Link router running the fantastic third-party DD-WRT firmware to demonstrate, but the settings are pretty standardized across all routers that support DDNSconsult the documentation for your router or firmware to find out where the DDNS settings are, or just poke around the settings until you find them.
