What Is A Domain

What is Domain (Network) | Domain name (internet) | DNS server explained

Windows domains provide network administrators with a way to manage a large number of PCs and control them from one place. One or more servers known as domain controllers have control over the domain and the computers on it.

Domains are generally made up of computers on the same local network. However, computers joined to a domain can continue communicating with their domain controller over VPN or Internet connection. This allows businesses and schools to remotely manage laptops they provide to their employees and students.

When a computer is joined to a domain, it doesnt use its own local user accounts. User accounts and passwords are managed on the domain controller. When you log into a computer on that domain, the computer authenticates your user account name and password with the domain controller. This means you can log in with the same username and password on any computer joined to the domain.

Network administrators can change group policy settings on the domain controller. Each computer on the domain will get these settings from the domain controller and theyll override any local settings users specify on their PCs. All the settings are controlled from a single place. This also locks down the computers. You probably wont be allowed to change many system settings on a computer joined to a domain.

Setting Up The Global Domain Name For Your Network

To set up the global domain name for your home network, go to System > Settings > General. Then enter a hostname for your OPNsense router and the default domain name for your entire network. In the example below, I would be able to access the OPNsense web administration page by going to

Note: It is not necessary to have a real domain name registered if you are just using the domain name internally on your network. However, if you do have a real domain name , you may also use it internally for devices on your network. If you use a real domain name, your local DNS server on your router will know how to resolve names for devices on your local network even if they those hostnames are not included the public DNS records. You only need to add/update the IP addresses of domains/subdomains of public DNS records if you plan to host publicly accessible services on your network.

Even though you do not have to use a real domain name for your local devices, you cannot simply use any domain name you want. The help message says to avoid using local as the domain name since it interferes with the Bonjour protocol, for instance. You should also avoid using domain names of real websites that you plan to visit. I imagine you will not be able to reach such websites since the local DNS server on your router will be trying to resolve that domain name to devices on your local network.

Pihole & Adguard Home

Its not hard to run a DNS Server.

There are plenty of ways to do so on a Linux machine, such as dnsmasq. You may also be interested in setting up Pi-Hole alongside dnsmasq. But there is also an easier way.

PiHole and AdGuard Home are two advertisement blockers that work very similarly. They are both DNS servers that deny access to known advertisers. The Home Assistant community moved to AdGuard because it is easier to use.

Et viola. The DNS server has responded with a local IP address for my home server, rather than the public address.

The Purpose Of Dns Servers

It’s easier to remember a domain or hostname like than it is to remember the site’s IP address numbers So when you access a website, like Lifewire, all you have to type is the URL

However, computers and network devices don’t work well with domain names when trying to locate each other on the internet. It’s far more efficient and precise to use an IP address, which is the numerical representation of what server in the network the website resides on.

The DNS server sits in the space between humans and computers to help facilitate their communication.

How Does The Domain Name System Work

Think of DNS like Siri on your iPhone. When you say call David, something amazing happens your phone calls David. This isnt magic its a complex process that receives and translates inputs into the desired output for an end user. Its mapping the users input of David with a corresponding output from its internal network.

DNS operates the same way, but with web addresses.

Just like every person has a unique phone number, every website has a unique domain name and subsequent IP address.

The translation from domain name to IP address is known as DNS resolution. The DNS resolution process includes several steps that happen almost instantaneously to resolve the DNS query.

Step 1: A user types a domain name or URL into their browser. The users internet browser issues a query request to the network to render the appropriate web page.

Step 2: A request is sent to the DNS recursor that was assigned to your computer from your Internet Service Provider . If the DNS recursor has the IP address cached, it will return the A record .

Step 3: If the users recursive resolver doesnt have the IP address cached, it will send a query for the IP address to the DNS root nameservers.

Step 4: The root nameservers examine the top-level domain of the query and refer your DNS recursor to the appropriate nameservers based on the TLD.

Step 8: Your DNS recursor returns the A record and renders the web address associated with the IP address to your browser.

Creating the actual DDNS entry is only half the battle when it comes to time saving and convenience. The other half is automating the whole process. Lets look at how to automate DDNS updates at the router and the desktop level.

Well be using a D-Link router running the fantastic third-party DD-WRT firmware to demonstrate, but the settings are pretty standardized across all routers that support DDNSconsult the documentation for your router or firmware to find out where the DDNS settings are, or just poke around the settings until you find them.

On DD-WRT youll find it under Setup > DDNS. By default, it is disabled. Open the drop down menu, as seen below, and select Custom. As you can see DD-WRT come with pre-configured entries for various DDNS services but the custom entry offers the most flexibility .

After selecting Custom you will need to enter the following information: the DYNDNS server , your username and password , and the hostname you selected in the previous section of the tutorial . If you arent sure what your DYNDNS server is, consult the documentation for the service you signed up for.

Leave the rest of the settings as they are. Click Save. Your router will now update the DDNS server every time your IP addresss changes .

    What Is A Domain Name

New computer users often confuse domain names with universal resource locators, or URLs, and Internet Protocol, or IP, addresses. This confusion is understandable. It is worth learning the differences between them because these terms are ubiquitous. It is also helpful to be able to use terms correctly when communicating to technicians or other people within a professional organization.

This naming convention is analogous to a physical address system. People find web pages in a manner similar to the way that they use maps to find physical locations. If the Internet is like a phone book, and a web page is like a physical building, the URL would be the precise street address of that building. The IP address would be like the car that travels to its destination. There are also other useful metaphors for understanding this relationship.

Why Should I Regularly Check My Dns Server

To stay safe on the internet, you must verify that your computers DNS requests are fulfilled by a trustworthy server.

Connecting to an untrustworthy DNS server carries serious security risks, such as identity theft and malware infections.

If you unknowingly use a DNS server operated by a hacker, it could redirect your browser to fake and dangerous websites.

Sadly, malware created by cybercriminals can hijack your computers DNS requests and have them processed by rogue servers in their control. These are commonly referred to as DNS attacks.

To fully check your DNS requests are being fulfilled by a trusted DNS server, run a DNS server check with our tool prior to visiting and/or logging into a website.

Our DNS server check tool doesnt simply look up your devices or routers settings. Instead, it uses advanced technology to determine the DNS server in actual use.

How Do I Change My Device’s Dns Server

Now all the devices on your home network are using fast, secure DNS, but you’ve probably got some devices that don’t stay on the home network. When your laptop or smartphone connects to the free Wi-Fi at that sleazy internet café, you’re also using whatever DNS server the owner chose as the default. Who needs cache poisoning when you have total DNS control?

That’s why you should change the local DNS settings on your laptops and mobile devices. Just how you do that varies by platform. On Windows 10:

  • Press Windows+I to open Settings,

  • Tap Private DNS provider hostname, and

  • Tap Save.

  • That next-to-last step is the reason I said its almost easy. Android doesnt let you enter an easy IP address like or Instead, you must enter the corresponding hostname. For Google Public DNS, thats not too badits But for CloudFlare, youll have to type

Apples iOS protects you from all kinds of security problems by locking down settings that other operating systems leave open. This added security can get in the way, though. You can change DNS settings on an iOS device, but you must do it again every time you connect to a new Wi-Fi network. As for your cellular connection, theres no way to change its DNS settings. Those using iOS need a third-party app to get global DNS control. A VPN would do the job, as would Cloudflare’s app.

    Dns Is Constantly Evolving

Now you know more about domain name servers, how DNS maps domain names to IP addresses, and how to choose your domain name and configure it to work within the distributed system of DNS servers around the world. Furthermore, you’re in the zone with zone files and registered for success with domain name servers.

You should understand that DNS is not a static concept. In late 2018, ICANN finally rolled out new security features for DNS. In short, those changes affected the cryptographic keys used in the Domain Name System Security Extensions protocol, known by techies as the root zone key signing key . The security improvements were necessary, says ICANN, because of the way networks are rapidly changing and expanding, in part due to the Internet of Things, which brings millions of new interconnected devices into the internet’s fold .

Those safety measures are incredibly important because criminal-minded hackers often try to tap into the DNS system to steal personal information or simply wreak havoc, for example, in attacks like DNS hijacking. That means defense-minded computer users and IT professionals alike must stay up to date on preventative measures to prevent DNS poisoning attacks and denial-of-service attacks, among others .
