What is DNS (Domain Name System)?

The acronym for Domain Name System is DNS. It is a naming system that works hierarchically and is decentralized for computers, servers , services, resources, network devices and components that are present on large networks such as the public Internet.

For example, in layman terms, it is a phonebook for computers on the Internet.

It translates and maps alphabetic domain names to the numeric Internet Protocol addresses of computers or servers. And it also does the reverse process. DNS uses User Datagram Protocol . DNS service uses port number 53.

Technically, computers or technically the routers use DNS servers to contact to get any domains translated and converted to an IP address of the server hosting a website. The entry for DNS servers could be few or many, as there would be multiple DNS servers. The examples are OpenDNS servers, or Google DNS servers.

It is a system that uses at least one DNS server to resolve DNS-names. DNS is used because computers and servers do not understand human-readable alphabetic domain names, where humans do not understand and remember numeric IP addresses, which the computers and servers can.

DNS service or server is an Internet service in general, thus maps or translates human readable domain names into machine or Computer readable IP addresses.

Why Are There Only 13 Dns Root Server Addresses

A common misconception is that there are only 13 root servers in the world. In reality there are many more, but still only 13 IP addresses used to query the different root server networks. Limitations in the original architecture of DNS require there to be a maximum of 13 server addresses in the root zone. In the early days of the Internet, there was only one server for each of the 13 IP addresses, most of which were located in the United States.

Today each of the 13 IP addresses has several servers, which use to distribute requests based on load and proximity. Right now there are over 600 different DNS root servers distributed across every populated continent on earth.

What Server Types Are Used In A Dns Check

There are 4 different types of DNS servers involved when performing a DNS check. Each has a different role and may not be needed at all depending on the situation, having all these different server types is what contributes to DNS propagation issues.

Recursive Resolver – The DNS server your device communicates with is called the recursive resolver and is issued to you automatically by your ISP, but can be also configured on your router or individual devices. These DNS severs are ideally located in close geographical proximity to return results as fast as possible. These servers will cache a copy of the DNS results to speed up future DNS lookup requests.

Root Name Server – This type of DNS server is responsible for returning the IP address of the TLD nameserver. For instance, if it is trying to resolve example.com, the root name server returns the IP of the TLD name server that runs .com domains.

TLD Name Server – This name server returns the authoritative name servers for each domain under the Top Level Domain it’s responsible for. The .com TLD name server will return results for example.com but not example.org.
