Use Domain Name Generators When Stuck

What is a Domain?

At this point, you should have at least a general idea of some possible words to put in your domain. Some of those words may already be taken, trademarked, or just dont have the sound youre looking for.

Thats where domain name generators come into play. These generators can turn your ideas into fresh, available domains.

Here are some of our favorite domain name generators to try out:

  • Wordoid This tool allows you to plug in a word it will come up with ideas that either contain that word, begin with that word or end with that word.
  • Lean Domain Search This tool matches your keyword with other keywords and generates a list of available domains.
  • DomainHole This tool allows you to search keywords, find expired domains, generate new names, and more.
  • Dont Sweat Over Domain Age

The notion that the age of a domain is an important SEO ranking factor is a myth. When asked about domain registration length, Googles Matt Cutts said, To the best of my knowledge, no search engine has ever confirmed that they use length of registration as a factor in scoring. If a company is asserting that as a fact, that would be troubling. The primary reason to renew a domain would be if its your main domain, you plan to keep it for a while, or youd prefer the convenience of renewing so that you dont need to stress about your domain expiring.

What does matter to Google are things like how long itâs been since your site was first crawled or since the first inbound link was recorded. Even so, though, Matt Cutts assures that the difference between a domain thats six months old and one year old is really not that big at all.

Does Online Affect Search Engine Rankings

From an SEO perspective, the .online extension is actually quite good. In search engine ranking terms, your .online domain has as much chance of appearing in the search engine results pages as say, the .com domain.

In real terms, this means then, that your .online could easily appear ahead of .com and other extension results providing your content is the best content available for Google to select for that search query.

What would likely hold you back more is choosing a country-specific domain name like .ca, .co.uk or .de. For these, search engines will likely perceive your content to be appropriate more so for that specific country.

So really then, your focus should be on the next question

    Domain Names Are Important

A business could potentially live or die on the web, based on its domain name. Im not trying to scare you into paralysis, but I am trying to help you understand just how important a domain name really is.

A friend of mine once said, Saying that a domain name doesnt really matter, is like telling a realtor that location is irrelevant.

Think of it this way: Your domain name is the web version of your street address. Its how people find you on the Web.

Beyond being your web location, your domain name is also your identity on the web. And although many people think that their website is their first impression online, its actually their domain name that is the first impression.

Your domain name also defines your brand and can potentially affect your Search Engine Optimization.

Its as important, if not more important, than choosing your business name. Yep, you heard me correctly: Your domain name is as important as choosing your business name.

So, dont jump into it haphazardly. Take your time. Think it through and pay attention to the following guidelines:

Domain Security Measure Adoption Slow Dmarc Most Popular

Internet Domains: what Web addresses mean

Adoption of recommended domain security measures by Global 2000 companies has been slow in the last couple years, CSC stated. Measures such as DNS redundancy, registry lock, Certificate Authority Authorization records, and DNS Security Extensions have seen only very modest growth since 2020. With the risks of not having domain security in place potentially leading to phishing or ransomware attacks, and many other cyberthreats, we hoped to see a higher implementation of some of these security measures, the report read.

In contrast, adoption of DMARC has risen from 38.9% in 2020 to 61.5% in 2022. CSC cited the fact that Verified Mark Certificates now require DMARC to be set up to ascertain Secure Sockets Layer certificates as a key driver behind the adoption. Additionally, Apple announced Brand Indicators for Message Identification in September and stated that its email clients for iOS 16 and macOS will support a broad industry effort to combat brand spoofing and impersonation. Senders that support BIMI must meet a strong standard of email authentication and this includes using the DMARC security standard, the report added.

Overall, companies with the most adoption of domain security measures had the highest security score based on CSC calculations, according to the report. Conversely, 137 companies were given a domain security score of zero, with most these based in the APAC region.

    Purchasing An Available Domain Name

Once youve determined whether your domain is available, you will want to purchase it from a domain registrar or web hosting company. Some web hosts will register a domain name for you for free when you buy a web hosting service from them, while others will do it for you, but youll have to cover the registrar fees .

Its a personal preference whether to register the name directly, with a domain name registrar, or with the web host. In any case, you want to make sure you are assigned as the owner, the administrative, and the technical contacts for the domain name you purchased. If you are buying multiple domains, it might be easier to use one good registrar. But, if you are buying a domain name and planning to make a website or use it for custom email purposes, it will be easier to go with the hosting company and keep everything under one roof.

One things for sure. You have to find a reliable company to buy your domain with. There are hundreds of companies available and we will recommend you the best ones from our experience, both registrars, and hosts.

If you decide to pick a company on your own, here are some things to consider when choosing one.

    Length Of Domain Name

It is always better to have a domain name that is short and easy to remember. Ideally, the length should be between 6-10 letters, with 8 being the sweet spot. Simple, concise, and typeable should be the rule over longer, more descriptive names.

The longer the domain, the more opportunity there is for a misspelling when typing. Also, when combining words in a domain, beware of letters that dont normally link together or are confusing, like expertsexchange.com for the site Experts Exchange. Not ideal.

Avoid using hyphens and numbers as they can complicate and frustrate users. Always remember: simple is best.

Difference Between Website Vs Domain Name Vs Website Hosting

Youll hear people talk about websites, domains and hosting. Those terms are all different, but very closely connected. Lets unpack this, shall we?

A website is a set of content, published on the internet. It is the collection of texts, images, designs etc. that you use to promote your business online.

All that information is stored on a server. This storing is also called website hosting. So thats where website hosting comes in. If you build a Jimdo website, it is stored on servers run by Jimdo.

If you register a domain name at a company, that company is called a domain host. So thats where the terms often flow together: the word host can mean different things in the context of websites.

The Difference Between A Website And Domain Name

Think of your website as a virtual, or digital, storefront. You need this storefront, this structure, for people to browse and purchase your wares. But how do these people find your digital store? This is where your domain name comes into play. Your domain name is unique there isnt another one just like it in all the internet When someone types your domain name into their browser its like an address that tells the computer where to go to find your website. Its an awful lot like following a map you need to know the name of your destination before you can punch it into your GPS to get there.

Back in the wild n wooly early days of the internet, domain names didnt exist. Instead, computers relied on strings of numbers called IP Addresses to find one another. If you typed in the right IP address, youd arrive at the site you wanted to visit. However, how many strings of numbers can you remember? We can hardly remember Pi . It became apparent to the internet powers-that-be that using IP addresses wasnt going to cut it. Humans have a hard time remembering long strings of numbers, but you know what we are good at remembering? Words, and specifically, names. And so the domain name system was born with two main purposes, the same purposes that IP addresses have:

  • To identify and distinguish web addresses.
  • To locate web addresses.
  • That domain names can also influence your brand and peoples perception of you is an added bonus!

Reducing Or Increasing Information Flow To Another Company

When a message comes from outside your organization, there are several types of replies that are automatically generated. Some types of replies are set up by users in Outlook or Outlook on the web, and others are set up by admins. Because the remote domain settings override settings configured by users, as well as mail user and mail contact settings configured by admins, you can choose which types of automatic replies are sent to everyone on a remote domain.

If a remote domain configuration blocks a specific type of reply, like a non-delivery report, from being sent to recipients in that domain, the reply is generated, but then it is deleted before it is sent. No error message is sent. For example, if you turn off automatic forwarding on the default remote domain, when users try to automatically forward email to another domain, they can change their settings or create the Inbox rule, but their messages won’t be forwarded.

The following table shows the types of replies you can control in a remote domain and the settings that each remote domain setting overrides.

What is Domain (Network) | Domain name (internet) | DNS server explained

A domain name is the unique name of a website. It functions like the site’s home address on the World Wide Web.

The term domain name is used interchangeably with the term “domain.” The only difference is that one is the name of the thing and one is the thing itself.

Not including its extension, like .com, the maximum length a domain name can be is 63 characters. The minimum length can be one character.

What Exactly Does A Domain Name Look Like

Lets use domain.com as the example. www.domain.com is what people would generally refer to as a domain name, but is that technically correct?

    Eh, sort of.

In the image above you can see that weve underlined the different parts of www.domain.com, separated, and numbered the different parts separated by the dots. Your domain name is, technically, the part that comes after the www. so its comprised of parts 2 & 3. Part 1, the www, turns your domain name into a complete web address, or URL In essence, every URL has a domain name in it, but URLs arent domain names.

Did you know that the two parts that make up your domain name, 1 & 2, actually have their own names? Part 3, what comes after the dot, is called the Top Level Domain, or TLD. Part 2, the beginning of your domain name, is called the Second Level Domain, or SLD.

So when someone asks, How do I get to your site? what theyre really asking for is your domain name.

How Does A Domain Name Work

When you clicked a link to this article, your browser looked the domain name up in the Domain Name System to see where the content for this article is stored. The DNS provided the IP address that is connected to the domain name jimdo.com. Your browser then loaded the content from the server at that IP address. And thats why you are able to read this right now.

Tech talk: Every website is stored on a server. On that server, the website has its own unique IP address: a series of numbers. Those numbers are hard to remember for humans, so the Domain Name System was introduced. Instead of the IP address, the website can now be reached by typing the domain name in a browser.
