How To Transfer A Domain Name

What is a Domain?

Domain transfer is the process of changing a domains registrar. As domain registrars offer different support and maintenance, some users transfer their domain for better service.

With Hostinger, users can perform a domain transfer from any registrar.

All you have to do is enter the domain authorization code or EPP from your current provider and confirm the transfer. The process can take from 4 to 7 days.

Unfortunately, some extensions are not transferable. However, there is an option to point the nameservers to a particular hosting company if a registrar doesnt accept certain TLDs. You will need to change your nameservers for this.

Note that changing the web server information can only be done from where you purchased the domain. However, if your registrar does not allow changing nameservers, it is still possible to point a domain to a different registrar using an A record.

How To Buy And Sell Domain Names And Make A Profit

While most people are familiar with the term house flipping, they may not be as well-versed on the phrase domain flipping. In laymans terms, domain flipping means the buying and selling of a website domain for a profit. Done right, buying and selling domain names can be a lucrative side hustle or small business.

The most expensive domain name ever was business.com, purchased by RH Donnelly for $345 million. While you can guess that this is far from the norm, there are ways to make a profit buying and selling domains. Here are some domain flipping tips to get you off to a successful start.

Understand the value

A domain name is much more than just the website address for a company, organization, group or individual. It is an important part of a business or personal brand. Domain names help people remember websites and serve as representations of a person or company online. A web address can be as important as the website it is associated with it’s a highly valuable asset.

Manage expectations

Buying and selling domain names can be fun and profitable but you should know the risks of domain investing. Keep things in perspective and have the right mindset. People are making a living buying and selling domain names but the selling of high-priced domains is rare. Don’t expect to make a lot of easy money.

Other Domain Name Types

We focused on the different extension types above. The following are the other available structures of domain names:

Second-Level Domain

A second-level domain is below TLDs in the domain name hierarchy. An SLD is the section of a domain name located to the left of the last dot. Take www.hostinger.com, for example hostinger is the SLD, and .com is the TLD.

Some domain name registries use an second-level domain to indicate a specific entity registering. For example, academic institutions in the United Kingdom mostly register websites under .ac.uk.

Subdomain

A subdomain indicates a separate division from a parent domain that still shares the same servers. There is no need to register a subdomain. Technically, the www of most URLs is a subdomain that shows that a site is part of the world wide web.

The most common reason to create subdomains is to organize and divide web content into separate sections. For example, Google uses developers.google.com to provide specific information for developers.

Another use of a subdomain is to create another website with the same name but in different languages. Take Wikipedia as an example it has a separate subdomain for each language. It uses en.wikipedia.org for the English version and es.wikipedia.org for the Spanish one.

Free Domain

A free web address often follows the same structure as subdomains. For example, instead of hostingertutorials.com, the domain would be hostingertutorials.wordpress.com or hostingertutorials.blogspot.com.

How Domain Names Work

When someone is ready to visit your website and enters a domain name, they simply hit the return key, and almost instantly your website homepage appears on their screen. Easy enough, right? Well, thats the idea but it actually involves a complex series of steps that occur in a few seconds. After typing in a web address, a web browser first sends a request to a network of servers throughout the world that is part of the Domain Name System .

These servers process the request and begin searching other servers for your websites technical address. Once the address is located, a request for access is issued. The server that houses your website is managed by your hosting company. Your web host has a system in place to gather the data associated with the requested web page and send this information back to the browser that initiated the process. Soon, your page opens and is ready for viewing.

Domain Names Can Communicate Expectations

Website hosting and Internet domain names web concept with domains ...

Sometimes you cant find a great branded domain name or your market is too competitive to earn business through brand recognition. In these cases, you can strategically use your domain name to set consumer expectations and increase click-through rates.

For instance, if you operate a lawn care service in a large city like Tampa, you might find it difficult to grow a brand identity due to the amount of competition. Rather than choosing a branded domain name that few people would recognize, you might get more value by picking a domain name like TampaLawnCare.com.

While you cant trademark the name because it is a general term, it does help you clearly set expectations to your website visitors. Moreover, choosing targeted keywords in your market or industry can help you improve your local SEO.

What Does It Cost To Purchase A Domain Name

Domain names can range from free though always with an asterisk related to later costs to tens of dollars to millions of dollars. There are many factors that will determine how much it costs to register a domain name, including the following:

  • What is the TLD? The cost of new registrations and renewals are is regulated by ICANN and the respective domain name registries that set the prices . Registrars will have to pay that cost whenever a domain name is registered through them, which is why prices and special offers may differ from one registrar to another. *.com, *.net and the other popular TLDs are usually less than $40 per year, while some newer TLDs like *.ceo cost hundreds and *.rich cost thousands.
  • Is this a new registration or does someone else already own it? As previously mentioned, new registration costs depend on those domain name registries like ICANN and your registrar. However, if someone else already has your preferred domain names, you may have to pay them for it.Note: if someone else owns a domain name that violates registered trademarks you own, you have a clearer path to securing it. At that point, it becomes a legal matter. We recommend referring to ICANNs Uniform Domain-Name Dispute-Resolution Policy for what options are available to you.

A websites URL will always include the sites domain name. However, as you can see, there are several other sections of the URL that are required to access any resource or page of a website.

While there is only one domain name for a website, there can be an endless number of URLs.

    How Domain Name Works:

When the domain name is entered in your web browser, a request is sent to the global network of servers that form the Domain Name System , which is like a phonebook of the internet.

The server then searches the name servers related to the domain and forwards the request to the name servers. The name servers are big computers, which are managed by hosting companies. The hosting company forwards the request to the webserver where your site is stored. The web server fetches the requested web page or information and forwards it to the browser.

The Domain Names System is managed by Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers . It is a non-profit organization that creates and implements the policies for domain names.

ICANN authorizes the companies called Domain Name Registrars for selling domain names. It also allows them to make changes to domain names registry on your behalf, and to sell domain names, manages their records, renewal, and transfer to other registrars. As a domain name owner, you are required to renew your domain registration before it expires.

    What Is A Domain

A domain, or domain name, is a web URL or address. Youll see the domain name after the http:// or www. in a URL string, or after the symbol in an email address. A domain name serves as a user-facing digital destination. It’s the equivalent of the physical address of a store. When you type a domain into your web browser, you’re giving your computer directions to a specific location on the web.

Sometimes, the domain name is simply the name of the brand. Shopify merchant Mikokos, for example, uses mikokos.com as its domain.

Some brands add to their domain names as their preferred domain name may already be taken or cost too much. Swimsuit brand Viera for example, adds the word swim to its domain name, using vieraswim.com as its URL.

Depending on your industry, and how competitive it is, you may have to get a little creative when deciding on your domain name. This may include using a different domain extension such as .org, .cc. or adding more words to include in your domain.

If you’re selling cars for example, Cars.com is already taken. But you can experiment with cars and see if there is availability.

While it’s likely not possible to land a short or popular domain name without spending a signifiant amount of capital, a little creativity goes a long way when choosing a domain name.

    How Do Domain Names Work

Domain names are unique digital addresses that are easy for people to remember and use. When you enter a URL, your device sends a request to the global Domain Name System network of web hosts. When someone enters your domain name into their browser, they will be directed to your web page.
