When To Use A Org Extension
Using other TLDs can be beneficial in some situations. In particular, the .org extension is well-known and trusted.
.org stands for organization and is the primary choice for charity or non-profit websites. The extension is also one of the originals established in 1985, so its been around for decades. It was created for anything that wasnt commercial .
However, restrictions were removed in 2019 after the registry changed ownership, allowing for-profit companies to use the extension. If you use .org correctly, it can give you a bump in social credence or validation. Many users perceive .org sites as more authoritative and credible than alternatives.
If you choose to use a .org, youll need to brand your company with the .org tied directly to your name. Thats because, as previously noted, most users assume companies use the .com extension. Tying the .org to your brand decreases the likelihood that people will visit other sites by accident.
As far as search rankings go, the extension performs well but has less sway than a matching .com.
A Brief History Of Top
There are over 1,000 TLDs available and new ones are coming out all the time.
Top Level Domains are the suffixes at the end of every URL. .com is the most well-known TLD, but its hardly the only one. In fact, there are over 1,000 TLD options available. Not all of them are available to the public, but thats still a lot of options.
The name .com comes from the word commercial and the first domain name to use it was symbiolics.com, in 1985. Before TLDs, if you wanted to reach a website, you needed to connect to it through its IP address. Each server you connect to still has its own IP address you can reach, but that proved too unwieldy for everyday use. To tackle that problem, the Domain Name System launched in 1985.
Its thanks to the DNS you can connect to your favorite websites using simple-to-remember names. More importantly, keeping a record of registered domains enables us to avoid duplicates. TLDs are an integral part of this system and back when they launched, options were more limited. Aside from .com, 1985 also saw the launch of multiple other TLDs, including staples such as .org, .edu, and .net. Over thirty years later, all those TLDs are still common the web.
Use A Domain Name Generator
In order to make the brainstorming process much easier and productive, start your journey towards picking a domain name for your site with a list of options, rather than a blank page. By using a domain name generator, youll be able to get a broad range of ideas based on keywords or phrases related to your brand.

B: My Market Is International And This Will Be My Only Website
A ccTLD is not for you. This is why gTLDs exist.
Unless we’re talking about a gccTLD , which should perform fine in Google. Remember, though, that even though Google’s market share is huge, they’re not the only search engine in town.
Bing, Yandex, and Baidu tend to rhyme very closely with Google’s methods, and as of writing this, we have no evidence that gccTLDs are treated the same way by any of the others. So use a gccTLD here at your own risk.
Whats In A Domain Name

When we refer to a domain name, were referring specifically to the part between the https and extension . I.e., our domain name is Kinsta. Heres a visual layout to parse a domain name:
Now, lets take a brief interlude into history to answer the Shakespearean question: whats in a domain name?
In the beginning of the internet, domain names werent initially used. Instead, users associated IP addresses with specific websites and typed in a string of numbers like 192.168.0.1.
This, obviously, became pretty impossible to manage once the internet started to grow.
Words, far easier to remember than that number string, came into circulation as a new method for reaching websites. And so domain names were born.
Keeping with our address analogy, your domain name is the address of your website, but the IP address which the Domain Network System communicates with is the GPS coordinates.
Both can take you to the same place, but one is much more effective at being found by humans. Take, for instance, this address: www.dogs.com.
If you clicked on it, you were probably pretty surprised to find PetSmart load.
A strong domain name like the above example helps people find your website without any intervention. No complicated number strings or search engines necessary.

Stay Unique And Brandable
A unique domain name can help your business stand out and potentially help you avoid legal trouble. It can also contribute to your marketing efforts, so youll want it to be brandable.
StitchFix is an excellent example of a unique, brandable name.
StitchFix checks all the boxes when it comes to marketable domain names. Its fun to say, doesnt have any inherent meaning, and is easy to remember and spell.
Pointing A Domain To A Host
Lets say you have just moved your site to another hosting provider. However, your domain name stayed with the old hosting company, and it does not direct visitors to your website.
This problem happens because your domain is not connected to the new web host. You have several options on how to solve this issue, but in practice, we only recommend using one method.
You can transfer the domain to the new hosting provider. However, domain transfer usually includes additional charges as the domain will be renewed for another year.
The second option is to update the domains DNS A record with your new IP address. Nevertheless, since A records are designed to point to static IP addresses, its advisable not to use this method. If the IP changes, your website will stop working until you update the record.
The last method is changing the domains nameservers. This is the most recommended option as you can transfer your domains DNS control to the new hosting provider without changing your registrar.

Plurals The And My Forms Of The Domain Name
Very often, if you can’t get the domain name you want, the domain name registrar will suggestalternate forms of the name you typed. For example, if you wanted website.com, andit was taken , it might suggest forms like:
thewebsite.commywebsite.comwebsites.com
and the like, if they were not already taken as well. The question is, should you take them?
My personal opinion is that if you take the “the…” and “my…” forms of the domain name, you must always remember to promote your site with the full form of the name.Otherwise, people are likely to forget to affix the necessary “the” or “my”. For that reason,I always advertise my sites as “thesitewizard.com” and “thefreecountry.com” in their fulldomain name forms, rather than just “Free Country” or “Site Wizard” .
On the other hand, I would not take the plural form of the domain name if Icannot also get “website.com”, since the chance of the visitor failing to type the “s” in thename is very great. Think about the famous name tussle between etoys.com and etoy.com. Manypeople wanting to go to etoys.com were apparently going to etoy.com instead. If it happenedto them, it can happen to you too.
Pick A Domain Name Thats Flexible
Your domain name is one area where you dont want to paint yourself into a box. While you should be specific enough to attract an audience, you dont want to be so precise that theres no room for your website to grow.
For example, shutter.photography might be perfect for a photography blog. However, if you decide to write about other art forms as well, youll be stuck with an inaccurate domain name. So its smart to consider upfront how your site or business may expand over time.

Create Dhcp Static Mappings
If you have any static IPs you would like to set for some of your devices such as your server, you have the option to specify a hostname. This hostname will be used instead of the hostname set on the device itself if the DHCP Static Mappings option is set.
You also have the ability to set a different domain name for the static mapping for the device if you so desire. It is likely unnecessary in most home network environments, but perhaps it is useful if you are hosting multiple domains on your network.
Com Domains History And Ranking
You should always pick the .COM before any other extension. This is because .coms have become the industry standard for domain names. Whenever you hear someone start saying wwwyou naturally expect a .COM at the end. It also ranks best because, in the beginning , .COM was created to represent commercial usage. Since businesses naturally embraced the domain extension, its presence and familiarity took off. This large presence of .com domains helped establish its reputation forever on the Internet.
.COM domains rank easily and quickly. I always pick .COM domains whenever possible. I even prefer a long .COM to a short .NET or .ORG. More examples are given near the end.

So Why Is Www Or Not Still An Issue
Why are we still debating this now? Cant people just use what they prefer, and the rest of us leave them to it?
Yes, of course.
But you see, if youre an administrator of a web site, you probably want to make an educated choice. Because as with most things on the internet, not everything was thought through when we started using them. Things like cookies.
How To Choose The Best Domain Extension For Your Personal Site

By now, you know how important it is to have a personal resume website in your arsenal. We’ve also shared a few tips on making your resume website more interactive and provided the crucial mistakes you should avoid.
But, there is another important consideration to make before purchasing a domain name for your website, and that is the domain extension.
When youre creating a personal resume website, its important to go with your name. After all, this website is all about you and presenting yourself in the best possible light to potential employers. Choosing anything else for a domain name would be just plain silly.
Another point to keep in mind is that your site is the very beginning of your personal brand. Changing your domain later on, could hurt not only your brand but your search rankings as well. Thats why its crucial to settle on the right combination of your first and last name paired with the right extension now.
However, finding the best domain name extension might prove to be more difficult than you imagine. If you have a relatively common name, there is a good chance that someone already grabbed their personal domain with a .com extension. What should you do then? What if your name is already taken?

Choose A Domain Name You Can Actually Legally Own
Infringing on a trademark can mean a really bad day. And, while I realize hardly anyone registers a domain name with the intent to infringe on anything, those things do happen every once in a while.
Therefore, as a rule of thumb, whenever you have a nice domain name idea and youre just about to register it, simply google the name and look through all of the first and second-page results. What youre looking for are businesses that already use this name and operate in a similar market or niche.
If you find anything, you likely need to pick another domain name.
