My apologies. These real estate companies below are all real people. I dont mean any disrespect. They arent really the worst.

And some of these are okay domains, but still break at least one of my rules for good domain names for real estate.

So no offense intended, real estate brokers and sites Ive included! At least Im giving yall a backlink!

So here we go!

What Is A Domain Name

A domain name is the unique name of a website. It functions like the site’s home address on the World Wide Web.

The term domain name is used interchangeably with the term “domain.” The only difference is that one is the name of the thing and one is the thing itself.

Not including its extension, like .com, the maximum length a domain name can be is 63 characters. The minimum length can be one character.

Dont Obscure Your Purpose

So this is close to home. This is my personal website.

When I started Hood Homes Blog, I wanted HoodHomes.com. It was unavailable. I wanted to make my blog and content marketing a central part of my business. So I went with HoodHomeBlog.com.

The problem, Ive discovered, is that people dont associate a blog with a real estate site. There are hundreds of visitors to my webpage that dont seem to realize Im a Realtor. I know that because Ive had clients who were loyal readers of my blog tell me that they hadnt realized I was even an agent until months of being active on my site.

Ive tried to make it more obvious since then . But I honestly think the blog throws them off. Understandably.

Its my brand now, and Im sticking with it. But if I had to start over.

Dont confuse your potential clients!

How Domains And Web Hosts Work Together

To visit a website, two things need to be in place: a domain name, and a web server.

The web server is where youll store all of your websites files, databases, media elements, and more. This space is what youre renting from a hosting company when you purchase web hosting.

Your domain name is what people will type into a web browser to access your site. The moment someone types your domain name into their web browser, the web browser communicates with the server used to store your websites files and displays them.

What Characters Can Go In A Domain Name

What Are Some Examples Of Domain Names

A domain name can be any combination of English alphabet letters and numbers .

You can also use the dash character. For example, Class Central’s domain was originally class-central.com, but they were able to buy classcentral.com without the dash, which looks more official, and is easier to type.

You can use these names in combination with various domain name extensions, such as .com, .net, and .org. These extensions are also called Top Level Domains or TLD’s for short.

Overall, the DNS system makes for a more usable and user-friendly web.

How Domain Names Work

When you type in the URL or the domain name into your search bar, you can find the desired site in seconds. This is a process that weve all grown used to and take for granted, at this point. However, many things function behind the scenes to make this possible.

As previously mentioned, every website has its IP address stored on the server, similar to each computers IP address on the internet. However, many websites exist on the web, and these IP addresses can be long and difficult to remember.

This is where the DNS comes into play. This system is an extensive network of servers located worldwide, and it connects people to websites using the IP addresses of those sites as identifiers. The DNS converts those numerical IPs into domains so that we can understand them more easily.

What If My Name Is Already Taken

If you have a fairly common name, your full name might not be available as a .com domain name. What should you do if yours is taken?

Here are some alternatives.

  • Use a different domain extension. Instead of .com, go for .net, .us, .info or whatever else is available and makes sense.
  • Add a middle initial. If JohnSmith.com isnt free, maybe JohnZSmith.com is.
  • Get creative. Matt Mullenweg uses the domain ma.tt for example.

What Are Some Examples Of Domain Names

Now that we’ve analyzed the top and middle domains, we’ve technically covered all there is to a domain name. makeuseof.com is the domain name for this website but of course, if you look at what’s in your address bar, you’ll see there’s a lot more to it than that!

The rest of the address outside of “makeuseof.com” is called the Uniform Resource Locator . It’s not part of the domain name, but it’s used to modify and build upon it to create a functioning website. As such, it’s good to know the additional parts of a URL and how they alter the domain name to bring you the page you want to visit.

Pick A Domain Name Thats Flexible

Your domain name is one area where you dont want to put yourself into a box. While you should be specific enough to attract an audience, you dont want to be so precise that theres no room for your website to grow.

For example, shutter.photography might be perfect for a photography blog. However, if you decide to write about other art forms in the future, youll be stuck with an inaccurate domain name.

Therefore, its smart to consider how your site or business may expand over time. Youll want to make this decision with a long-term vision.

Tip : Decide On Targetable Domain Types

Creating sub-domains doesnt always make sense. A sub-division of your web address can also be confusing to web visitors, for example, if you generally dont have a lot of content or if the sub-domain distracts too much from the actual domain name. Therefore, only decide to use an individual third-level domain if you have a clear concept in mind for this. A specific sub-domain is useful for the following scenarios, among others:

    • Differentiation of different language versions
    • Separation of content from other offers such as a service area, a blog, or a forum
    • Marking a specific web service such as an app or an FTP server
    • Operating an online store in parallel to the website under the same second-level domain

    How Companies Fight Impostor Sites

As we mentioned above, the top-level domain is customisable. Unfortunately, if you get a domain name that ends in .com, it doesn’t automatically mean that .co.uk, .net, and other top-level domains are under your control.

If you own a business called Purple Cat Pottery, and you registered www.purplecatpottery.com as your site, it doesn’t automatically “reserve” www.purplecatpottery.co.uk. Someone in the UK could make their own company with the same name and register their site under .co.uk, and it’ll go to their website instead of yours.

People can exploit this to harm users. Let’s say your pottery starts taking off, but you only own the .com domain. Someone could register www.purplecatpottery.net and create a fake clone of your site. They can use this to distribute malware or set up phony buy orders for your pottery to visitors who arrive at the wrong website.

Businesses tend to register multiple top-level domains which redirect back to the main website to combat this. You can try it on this site try going to https://www.makeuseof.co.uk and watch what happens to the address as it loads.

    MAKING A MARK: It

Secure sockets layer certificates are only granted to websites with an FQDN. As a result, its not only beneficial for anyone looking to establish trust its also a necessity.

    But whats an SSL certificate?

When you shop online, you may notice that your browser bar changes when you make a transaction. As shown in the image above, this change is usually in the form of a padlock and an https in front of the URL.

It may be a subtle change, but its an important one. The change is thanks to SSL certificates, which are small data files that secure and encrypt the connection between a user and a website. As a result, SSL certificates are extremely important for safe transactions and establishing trust.

However, the only way to get an SSL certificate is to have an FQDN for your website. Since SSL certificates try to link an organizations identity to a location ,

While we wont dive too deeply into the types of SSL certificates, note that one is required for each FQDN on your website. In other words, if your site has FQDNs www.myserver.com and shop.myserver.com, then youll need two SSL certificates if you want to secure both.

What Is A Domain Name 5 Straightforward Examples

What is a domain name and how do they help you on the web? Let’s find out all about the technology behind these names.

Every time you use your web browser, you enter domain names of sites you want to visit into your browser’s address bar. But what’s the technology behind these names, and how do they help you get to the places you want to visit?

Let’s break down what a domain name is, and why we use them.

What Are The Parts Of A Domain Name

Domain names are typically broken up into two or three parts, each separated by a dot. When read right-to-left, the identifiers in domain names go from most general to most specific. The section to the right of the last dot in a domain name is the . These include the generic TLDs such as .com, .net, and .org, as well as country-specific TLDs like .uk and .jp.

To the left of the TLD is the second-level domain and if there is anything to the left of the 2LD, it is called the third-level domain . Lets look at a couple of examples:

For Googles US domain name, google.com:

    • .com is the TLD
    • google is the 2LD

But for Google UKs domain name, google.co.uk:

    • .com is the TLD
    • .co* is the 2LD
    • google is the 3LD

*In this case, the 2LD indicates the type of organization that registered the domain .

Tips For How To Find A Good Domain Name

Here are some tips to help you find a domain name:

    1. Keep It Short. The longer your URL is, the harder it will be to remember, and the more likely people will misspell it.

    2. Make it Easy to Remember. A string of six random letters might be really short, but its not easy to remember. Your domain name has to stick in peoples minds in order for them to remember it and tell others about it.

    3. Work With Your Brand. If you already have a brand name, you really need to find a URL that works with your brand. People will try to type in the name of your company with a .com at the end anyway, so you might as well go with it. It goes without saying that you dont use someone elses brand or brand terms without their written permission. For example, WordPress is a brand, so you cant use that term in your domain name.

    4. Use Keywords. Using search terms as part of your domain name can increase your search engine rankings and increase the chances of people finding your site. They need to fit into the name naturally, though. What keywords would people search under in order to find your type of business? Can you work one or more of them into your domain name without it sounding too awkward?

    5. Relevant and Descriptive. It may help if your domain name describes what your website does in some way. It doesnt have to , but it makes it make it easier for visitors to know what you do, especially if youre not Amazon, Google or Yahoo.
