Shopify Godaddy Domain Setup – Connect Your Godaddy Domain To Shopify In Minutes

And if youre a complete noob when it comes to DNS settings and name servers, maybe sticking to Shopify is the best option for you.

2) Buy your domain inside of Shopify

Within Shopify theres an option where you can buy a domain and they will register it for you and set everything up correctly. Shopify will also automatically request an SSL certificate for you which is required to encrypt your store whenever you accept credit card payments.

However, you cant register all domain endings. So if you want a local domain ending like .de or .es or something exotic, youll have to use a third party service like GoDaddy to get those domain names.

At the end of the day both options are great.

Ive used Shopify as well as third party services to buy domain names and it was straight forward in both cases. Buying the domains directly within Shopify always gave me less technical headaches though.

None of this is rocket science, it just needs to get done.

So ask yourself whats more important: Saving money or having less technical headaches?

That should point you in the right direction.

Custom Domain Setup On Shopify

Your domain is automatically set up as the primary one when you purchase a Domain through Shopify. By default, it will carry a URL name as xyzshop.myshopify.com. To change the domain name, you need to add a custom URL such as www.xyzshop.com. There are two ways to do it on Shopify.

You can buy and have the custom domain setup through Shopify. It will automatically become your primary domain. If you already own a third-party custom domain name, you can use it by connecting it to your Shopify store or transfer it to Shopify.

In addition to your primary domain xyzshop.myshopify.com, you can have up to ten domains/ subdomains added to your Shopify store. If you are a Shopify Plus member, you can add unlimited domains or subdomains. You get a new SSL certificate when you add a custom domain name to Shopify.

What Is A 3rd Party Domain

Lets start by clarifying what we mean by 3rd party domain.

With Shopify you get three basic options when it comes to domain names:

  • You can simply go with the free domain Shopify gives all store owners which is yourstorename.myshopify.com
  • You can buy and host your domain name with Shopify
  • You can buy and host your own domain name with a 3rd party provider such as GoDaddy, NameCheap, Google Domains or wherever and point it to your Shopify store
  • No. 3 is what we mean by a 3rd party domain, i.e. where your domain is hosted by someone other than Shopify. It is also the best option.

    Prepare Your Domain For Transfer

Before you can transfer your domain to Shopify, you need to unlock your domain and get a transfer authorization code from your domain provider.

When you transfer a domain to Shopify, your domains A record and CNAME record are set to Shopifys default domain records. If additional records are present on your domain before the transfer, then make a copy of those records to add to the Domains section of your Shopify admin after the transfer. For example, you might need to add an MX record to reconnect your domain to an email hosting service.

    Note

The process for preparing a domain for transfer varies by third-party domain provider. If you have trouble preparing your domain for transfer, then contact your third-party domain provider. Shopify Support cant log in to your third-party domain account for you, even if you give your explicit permission.

    Steps:

  • Log in to your third-party domain provider account.
  • Confirm that the email address associated with your account is up to date and doesnt belong to the domain that you want to transfer.
  • Make a copy of any domain records that you might need to configure your domain after the transfer.
  • Click Unlock next to the domain that you want to transfer. You might need to approve this choice by clicking on a link in a confirmation email.
  • Click Transfer this domain, Transfer out, or similar to get a transfer authorization code from your provider.

Youll have to consider cost, availability of themes and options, the importance of having your own domain name, the size of your business, how much bandwidth you’ll need and ease of use, among other factors. How To Connect Your Domain To Shopify

Getting a domain directly from Shopify may cost you more than getting it from a third-party site such as GoDaddy, HostGator, NameCheap, BlueHost, Hostinger, and many more. This is one of the main reasons why a lot of e-commerce sellers get domains from a third-party site and not from Shopify. Aside from the domain purchase, you also need to consider the renewal price.

If you also hold a lot of stores, it may be beneficial for you to get it from those third-party domain registrars. When you connect a third-party domain to Shopify, it points your domain name to your Shopify store. So when someone enters your URL into their browser, theyll be directed to your Shopify e-commerce shop.

In this tutorial, we will walk you through the general setup on how to connect your domain to your Shopify. It doesnt matter what third-party site is, the process will be the same.

Can You Change Your Shopify Store Name

It depends if you want to rebrand your store by changing just the name that shows on your store front or if you want to also rebrand your domain name. Remember that the name displayed in your Shopify store and the URL are separate things.

Its possible to change the domain name, but there are serious risks involved for established brands and many, many hours of additional work necessary to ensure that any damage to your brand is minimal. For that reason, we suggest keeping the domain as it is and simply changing your Shopify store name.

Generally, we recommend that your store name be the same as your domain name in order to keep consistency and give the right message to customers who visit. However, your marketing strategy may not fit with this best practice. For example, you may want to focus your store on a particular product or audience so you need to change the store name for that purpose.

In such cases, updating the store name is easy by following these steps.

  • In the backend of your Shopify store, go to the tab Settings located in the bottom, left side of your screen.
  • In the Store name field, change the name to the new store name and it will be applied to the store front.
