How To Transfer A Domain Name

How To Use a Custom Domain Name with Your Web Server

Domain transfer is the process of changing a domains registrar. As domain registrars offer different support and maintenance, some users transfer their domain for better service.

With Hostinger, users can perform a domain transfer from any registrar.

All you have to do is enter the domain authorization code or EPP from your current provider and confirm the transfer. The process can take from 4 to 7 days.

Unfortunately, some extensions are not transferable. However, there is an option to point the nameservers to a particular hosting company if a registrar doesnt accept certain TLDs. You will need to change your nameservers for this.

Note that changing the web server information can only be done from where you purchased the domain. However, if your registrar does not allow changing nameservers, it is still possible to point a domain to a different registrar using an A record.

What Is The Website Domain

Once in the browser, users can open web pages by entering a uniform resource locator in the address bar, like so:

When users dont know the URL of a website, they can use a search engine, like Google, to find it. Computers communicate using unique number strings called IP addresses, which look like this: 172.17.234.8.

If you type in an IP associated with your website, youll end up seeing your website in the web browser. Now, imagine that you would have to memorize countless IP addresses to access websites daily. Its highly unlikely that users will memorize all of this information. So, this is where domains come in place.

A website domain is a user-friendly version of your IP address. Its an easy-to-remember way for users to access your website. Google.com, Amazon.com, and Youtube.com are some of the most popular domains on the web.

Oftentimes, users confuse domains and URLs. So, lets make it clear. A URL is a complete web address used for locating files on the web.

Whereas, a domain name is a form of web address located in a URL. For example, Colibris URL looks like this: https://colibriwp.com/

A domain name inside this URL looks like this: colibriwp.com

Keep The Domain Name Short

Short domains work much better than long ones. The reasons are quite obvious: theyre easy to type and remember, resulting in positive user experiences.

Today, short domain names are becoming more and more important as the number of mobile users continues to increase. Thats because they fit the small screens compared to long ones, making it easy for mobile users to remember the site they visit. Also, long URLs often scare site visitors. If you make your domain names unnecessarily complicated, your audience might raise suspicions about you.

How To Register A Domain Name

Registering a domain name is quite simple once you know how to do it, and it can be done in a matter of minutes.

1. Choose a website to get your domain name from. You can register through a online presence provider like Web.com or resellers.

2. Use that website to check that the domain you want is available. If its available, you can move forward with the transaction.

3. At this point in the process, you might also add additional products and services to your cart. Services such as private registration, a hosting package, and additional years on your registration can be very beneficial to your small business website.

4. Pay the registration fee.

When is the best time to register a domain name?

The moment you have an idea for a business, product or brand, you should register a domain name for it. The right time to buy a domain name is when you have a business idea and you are ready to make it a reality. If someone else has the same idea as you, they can register the domain name before you do. Then, if you still want it, you will probably have to pay them for it, and domains on the domain aftermarket arent always cheap.

Purchase And Register Your Domain Name

Domain.com

Although its possible to register your domain name for free and meet the requirements of the global ICANN registry, not everyone is comfortable with their private information being available on the public ICANN registry. A domain name registrar will typically offer the option to provide the necessary information to ICANN while also protecting your privacy. For this reason, many people choose to use a private domain name registrar to purchase and register their domain name. This privacy protection may come with an additional fee.

Once you have chosen an available domain name, you can purchase the name for a nominal fee, typically around $10 to $15 per year. This fee is typically paid on an annual basis, but some registrars offer multi-year terms. When registering the name, youll want to pay close attention to the duration of the registration.

Rather than choosing a long-term registration, you may want to consider a shorter duration with automatic renewal. This way you still have the option to transfer your domain name to another company if youre dissatisfied with the service, but you arent vulnerable to the domain name being scooped up by another party in the event it expires before youve had a chance to renew the registration.

You may also be able to bid on a domain name that is already owned, but a word of warning: the costs can be quite high, depending on the popularity of the domain name.

Make Sure Your Domain Is Easy To Pronounce And Spell

You probably want your domain name to be original and memorable. However, novelty isnt always a good thing. If you modify the spelling of a common word to get that .com extension , you might confuse your audience.

While word-of-mouth advertising is powerful, it only works when people can actually pronounce your domain. This also makes the name easier to remember, increasing the odds that people will visit and pass the site along to their networks.

In recent years, more businesses have opted for 4-letter combinations of easily pronounceable domains. In addition to being incredibly memorable, this is also due to the ability for domains to hold aftermarket value. That is, if the business fails, the domain can still be sold. One very popular 4-letter pattern is c-v-c-v , exemplified by Snap and Meta.

Cost To Buy A Domain Name

What is a Domain Name? – A Beginners Guide to How Domain Names Work!

While you can get a domain for free, you may want to purchase one instead. A free domain will contain a designated prefix of the registrar, which is best if youre establishing an online presence or only temporarily need a website.

If you want your website to professionally stand out and grow with your brand, however, then invest in a domain name.

With Wix, the cost of a domain name depends on several factors, including:

  • The plan you purchase

However, all Wix premium plans come with a domain for one year, which cost between $14 and $39 a month. After a year, you can renew your domain for anywhere between $13.95 and $15.95 a year.

You can also purchase a domain that already exists from another person or business. This is why having a desirable domain name can be good for your bottom line if you ever want to sell it, you can make significant money. For example, in 2001 hotels.com was sold for $11 million. In a 2012 interview with BBC Today, hotels.com CEO, David Roche explained that at the time, this was considered a crazy sum of money. He then added, Now we look back and think, what a bargain.

If Its Not A Parked Domain Find The Owners Contact Information

If you find that the domain has a fully built-out site, then its not a parked domain. The domain is being used by a real business. Luckily, you still have recourse if you want to buy the domain.

First, determine how likely it is for the owner to sell the domain to you. Does the website look like its been recently updated? Is it under construction? If you cant find the owners contact information on the site, try searching for the owner through ICANN. Keep in mind that a good portion of domain name owners hide their contact information for privacy reasons.

Some of the most popular domain registrars include GoDaddy, Bluehost, and Domain.com, although there are many more to choose from. Be sure to carefully consider pricing and policies for each one before choosing your domain registrar, as it will be managing your domain name.

What To Do When The Name You Want Is Taken

Learn how to register a domain name by using most popular domain ...

Earlier, we discussed what makes a domain name great for your business from keyword inclusion to geo-targeting to finding something that fits your brand and is easy to remember. Its like striking gold when you come up with a domain name that includes everything you need. But with hundreds of millions of domain names already registered, there is a strong chance that the domain name you want is already taken. So now what do you do?

Make minor changes

The first thing you need to ask yourself is if you can make minor changes to the name and still have it work for you. Can you adjust the geo-target? Can you swap the order of any of the words in the name? Can you use a different extension?

Try adding an additional word to your domain name to see if you can get the .com extension. For example, if you want sarabakescakes.com and its not available, you could try something like sarabakesgreatcakes.com instead. You could also choose a domain name with a more well-known extension like .co or .net.

There are always emerging trends in the realm of domain extensions. Even though most people would prefer the .com extension, it is worth looking into .net or .biz versions of the domain name you want. Some of the current ones gaining traction are .tech, .health and .photo. Keep yourself up to date on whats becoming popular, especially in your industry.

An Introduction To Domain Privacy

When you register for a domain, you have to enter your personal details. This information is available to anyone who tries to access it.

However, there is a system in place that protects your data. Domain name privacy refers to domain name registrars that protect personal information from being publicly displayed in the WHOIS directory.

This directory is a public database of all website domain names. It includes the contact details of every domain owner. The WHOIS directory is maintained by ICANN :

When you search for a domain in the ICANN lookup tool, it provides you with information such as the date of registration, nameservers, and domain status. It also displays some details about the domain owners, including their phone numbers and email addresses.

This information is available to the public. However, you can implement domain privacy to hide this data.
