Shopify and Squarespaces interfaces arent a million miles apart in terms of layout both give you a menu on the left hand side of the screen that you use to get to different parts of the content management system .

The right hand side of the screen can be used to edit content, view data, add products and so on.

On the whole I would say that Squarespaces interface is currently the more elegant of the two, and is a bit easier to use than Shopifys, especially where general content management is concerned.

Its approach to setting up site navigation and its superb layout engine which allows you to drag and drop content into pages in a very user-friendly way make it extremely straightforward to use.

Map Your Domain To Squarespace

This post will take you through how to point your domain to Squarespace. After you connect your domain over at Squarespace , a new panel will open providing you the records you need to enter into the Advanced DNS Editor at Reclaim Hosting so your domain can be pointed correctly to Squarespace.

For Squrespace you need to create two CNAME Records and four A Records. The CNAME records appear to be used as a way to verify your account. You can see an example of the two I created below. Keep in mind the Name field for the verify.squarespace.com CNAME will be have a unique code in front of your domain. What I have listed below for the Name field will be a value Squarespace will provide.

The second CNAME you create will have www.yourdomain.com in your Name field.

You will then need to add four A Records pointing to four different IP address that Squarespace provides you.

Below is a look at the four A Records I created for this domain.

That should be all you need to get your domain mapped to Squarespace. I have never seen a service use both CNAME and A Records for one domain, I imagine they are building in a lot of redundancy, which is not necessarily a bad thing, just a bit more work at the point of setup.

During the initial setup, a change may take between 24 and 72 hours to complete. It is referred to as directory service waiting time, or the amount of time it takes for changes to be made across the web. There are numerous factors to consider, and Squarespace cannot predict the exact timing or make any changes.

The most critical step you can take is to update your DNS information in order to keep your account safe on online services such as Google or Facebook. When you are unable to access your site or account, it is critical to ensure that the DNS settings are up to date. Email Connected To A Domain Complicates The Decision

If you have an email account associated with your domain, that email account will no longer be active when you begin the transfer process, meaning your business won’t have access to email until the transfer is complete. You will need to create a new email account after the transfer. To have domain email through Squarespace or Weebly, you will purchase a monthly subscription of their built-in Google G Suite email plan.

You may be able to back up email from your previous email provider and restore the messages if your new and old email systems are compatible, but you need to ask your current domain provider in advance, before you initiate any transfer process, to make sure this is the case.

For clients who already have email through a third-party domain registrar, I generally recommend they connect their domains to avoid the disruption of losing active email accounts.

The Difference Between Connecting And Transferring A Domain

Choosing to connect a domain purchased elsewhere to your new website means that you continue to pay your domain registrar for domain renewals. If you have email services through your domain registrar, you continue to use that service. You pay Squarespace or Weebly only for a website hosting plan. You work with two companies to keep your website active one keeps the domain and email active and the other, Squarespace or Weebly, keeps the website files active.

Transferring a domain moves responsibility for the domain from the original domain registrar to Squarespace or Weebly. Both your website files and your domain are managed by one company, but you will have to establish a new email account through the integrated Google G Suite plan provided by Squarespace or Weebly.
