What Is A Domain Transfer

A domain transfer is the process of switching your domain name from one registrar to another. To be eligible for a transfer, you must have been with your current registrar for at least 60 days, since ICANN enforces a 60-day Change of Registrant lock.

You might want to initiate a domain transfer for a number of reasons. Maybe your current registrar has suddenly increased their prices, or your site is taking more time to load. Maybe you’ve found a better deal somewhere else and prefer to consolidate multiple domains under a single DNS registrar.

Whatever the reason, we’ve got you covered. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to transfer a domain.

What To Do Before Transferring Your Domain

Transferring Away from Register.com

There are several blocks in place to protect your domain name ownership that can cause difficulty in transferring your domain to a new registrar. Before you transfer your domain to HostGator, you must ensure that the domain is ready to be transferred. Please refer to the instructions below for preparing a domain for transfer.

Pre-transfer checklist

The very first thing to do is check if your domain is eligible for transfer to HostGator or if you need help from Live Support to have it transferred. To know what domain extensions can be transferred via the front-of-site or what requires help from Live Support, please check out the article Transfer Domain Name Registrations to HostGator.

So once you’ve confirmed your domain’s eligibility, please do the following at your current registrar.

  • Update your name servers: Changing your name servers while your domain is being transferred may cause the transfer to fail. Be sure that you update your name servers before the transfer begins so that your domain will be working as soon as possible.
  • Disable WHOIS Privacy: If WHOIS Privacy is enabled, it will prevent your verification information from being retrieved and prevent your transfer from succeeding.
  • Update your WHOIS information: Your WHOIS information may be used to verify your ownership of a domain before the transfer completes. Updating your contact information to ensure that you can access the email addresses on your WHOIS will prevent transfer failure.

  • It may take 45 days before they send you the authorization code.
  • Is Transferring The Domain Entirely The Best Option

As discussed above in How do I transfer my domain? There are lots of different ways you can control where your domain points. If you are perfectly happy with your current domain registrant, but are having a new website build and need to point the domain to this new site consider instead a simple Nameservers or A Record change where the domain stays where it is and simply points to the new site. The process is a lot easier and often takes half the amount of time and also means there is no down time to your emails.

What Is My Epp Code Or Authorization Key

The EPP code is an authorization key provided by your old registrar and required by your new registrar to complete a domain name registration transfer. You must contact the old registrar to obtain this.

If HostGator is your registrar, you can get your EPP code within your Customer Portal. Please check out the article, How To Unlock a Domain, for detailed instructions. The directions to get your EPP code are slightly different depending on when and how your domain was registered. You would need to reach out to your current registrar if you did not purchase your domain from HostGator.

    Plan Your Transfer Carefully

You are in full control of when the transfer first initiates so take time to carefully plan when it should happen. Either working by yourself or alongside your web agency, make sure as much as possible is in place before the transfer happens. Use this mini checklist to help:

    • Choose a start date for the transfer when your business is at its quietest.
    • Back all your old emails.
    • Set up alternative Gmail, Hotmail or a similar email account so that you can keep contacts informed when the wensite and email are unavailable.
    • Have your website or even a landing in place on its new servers so that it goes live the instant the transfer finishes.
    • Likewise do the same as above for all your new email address.

    Understand Whois Information And Transfers

During the transfer-out process, if private registration or redaction is turned on, none of the information for the registrant, administrative, or technical contact will be transferred to the new registrar. For domain names with full WHOIS published, this information may or may not be transferred depending on the new registrars processes.

Upon completion of the transfer, you should re-enter and verify this information with the new registrar. This process may yield a change to registrant, administrative, or technical contact provided for the registration.

    Get Your Domains Authentication Code

To transfer your domain, your new registrar will require the domains authentication code. Typically the code consists of a series of letters and numbers, like a password. The authentication code is a security mechanism that ensures that only the rightful owner of a domain can transfer it to a new registrar. Every domain has its own authentication code.

The authentication code is sometimes called the AuthInfo code or EPP code.

How to obtain your domains authentication code depends on your current registrar. Sometimes the code is available by viewing the domain details in the control panel . Alternatively, you may need to contact your current registrar and ask them for the code. Its a good idea to do this at least a few days before you need to transfer the domain, as it can take a while to obtain the code.

Enter Your Auth Code Whois Info And Nameservers

Now you need to fill in details to show you are the owner of that domain. If you want your contact details to stay hidden, just tick the I want all my contact information private button.

This is free, by the way. We dont like unnecessary charges!

You should now see a section asking you to enter all your WHOIS information. As you might suspect, you need to make sure all your details are valid and correct and that you have followed the ICANN policy we mentioned earlier.

The WHOIS section looks like this:

See that little checkbox at the top? If you click that, it will use these details to automatically fill in the four contact fields on the domain registrations internal ownership details. These are:

    • Admin
    • Technical details

The following section is the Auth Code field.

Your current registrar should have provided you with either an Auth Code or EPP code. Make sure you fill in the fields with the code exactly as provided to you.

Once thats done, you should see the following:

Choose either Use DreamHosts nameservers or Use another hosts nameservers .

Make sure you have read the Registrations Terms, and click Continue.

You now need to pay for the transfer.

    Request An Authorization Code

To transfer your domain, you’ll need an authorization code . This code is there to protect your domain from being transferred by an unauthorized party.

Additionally, this code serves as the bridge between your old registrar and your new provider and must be supplied within five days of your request, typically by email. Some registrars permit auto-generation of codes directly from their control panels.

How To Prepare With Your Current Registrar

There are a number of steps you will need to take with your current registrar in order to complete your transfer. With your current registrar, you will need to:

    • Unlock your domain
    • Update your contact information so Domain.com can send confirmation emails
    • Obtain your transfer authorization code
    • Make sure your domain has been registered for at least 60 days, or opt out
    • Ensure that your domain is not currently involved in any legal dispute, which could result in a registry lock
    • Contact your current provider in person in order to have your authorization code released to you. Some registrars do this for security purposes.
