Option 2 Redirecting To The Secure Version Of The Same Site

It’s not possible to use the panel’s Redirect option to redirect to HTTPS as this removes hosting from the domain. For example:

http://example.com to https://example.com

This is also not necessary since after you have added an SSL certificate to your domain, DreamHost automatically redirects the URL visitors use to view your site from HTTP to HTTPS. The S ensures that your connection is encrypted. For example:

There’s nothing on your end you must do in order to force your site to use the secure URL. However, in some special cases, it may be necessary for you to create your own custom configuration file to force the redirect from HTTP to HTTPS.

Adding custom code is only necessary if your website requires specific code to force the redirect. If so, you will need to first disable the automatic redirect in your panel.

How to Point a Domain Name to Another Web Host

There can be a variety of reasons why one wants to redirect their domain name, but the most common one is to ensure that maximization of all traffic intended for an individual site or business.

For example, you want to own a domain name that has the keywords YUMMY and PIZZA. You checked if WWW.YUMMYPIZZA.COM is available. Unfortunately, the domain name lowermost. You chose another name, and after checking out our article on how to choose the best domain name for your business, you decided that you would settle for WWW.VERYYUMMYPIZZA.COM. Your business went smoothly. You were enjoying great traffic from your website.

After a year, the domain owner of WWW.YUMMYPIZZA.COM contacted you and offered to sell you the domain for a small price. Since the domain name is your first choice, you bought the domain. Now you own two domain names WWW.VERYYUMMYPIZZA.COM and WWW.YUMMYPIZZA.COM. The first one was enjoying good traffic, but in the long run, you know that the latter would reap you greater benefits. Should you throw all the current traffic away from the first site and wait for the second sites traffic to grow? Or should you just maintain both sites? However, you also know that you do not have the resources to maintain two websites. What should you choose?

Pointing Two Urls To The Same Website

    * This post was originally posted on February 6, 2012, and has been updated for accuracy.

Pointing two URLs to the same website is a good way to direct traffic to your site from several different domain names. You can accomplish this in two ways: either redirect one of the URLs to your primary domain, or create an alias for one of the URLs. The alias would point that domain towards your primary domain.

As we move to the higher levels of web hosting, many providers will expect customers to know a lot more about server maintenance and management. Those with virtual private servers, root access, or other administrative roles, however, are likely facing higher stakes than those with personal shared hosting accounts or blogs. Because performance and security are critical to an online business, VPS customers may prefer to rely on the experts to move their site. Those types of managed services take the stress out of the move and guarantee any downtime will be minimal.

Youll likely need a VPS host that provides some form of managed services to move your site, as unmanaged plans sometimes tend to resemble the Wild West anything goes. Some providers allow you to obscure public WHOIS information for your website. When searched, your website will return contact information for your registrar rather than your personal details. This is useful if you’re running a business out of your home or don’t want your phone number displayed. However, private domains are more expensive than public domains.

My Domain Has A Dns Conflict Alert Message

This message shows if the subdomain you’re trying to point is also linked to your site as a third-party domain, which creates a conflict in your DNS settings. If youre pointing a subdomain, you dont need to link it as a new domain. You only need to create it in your root domains DNS settings panel.

Review your domain settings to see if this is causing the problem. If it is, youll see a subdomain linked in the Third-Party Domains section of the Domains panel, which looks like this:

You’ll also see subdomain records like these in the original domain’s DNS settings:

Do you need to change nameservers and point your domain to a new WordPress hosting provider?

Nameservers tell the global domain name system where to look for a particular website. This may sound a bit technical, but changing nameservers is actually a fairly straightforward process.

In this article, well show you how to easily change domain nameservers and point to a different host or firewall, step by step.

    What Are Nameservers?

Nameservers are part of the global database of domain name system. Their job is to tell other computers where to find a domain name.

If your web hosting account is the house where your website files live, then the domain name is the street address of that house.

Nameservers tell the internet where to locate the website address associated with a domain name.

When you enter a domain name in your web browser, it first sends a request to a global network of servers that form the Domain Name System .

These servers then search for the respective nameservers associated with the domain and forward the request accordingly.

For example, if your website is hosted on Bluehost, then its nameserver information will be like this:

    ns1.bluehost.comns2.bluehost.com
