Create Private Name Servers

The assignment of domains is organized centrally. Each top-level domain is managed by a network information center , also known as a domain name registry. Nic.com is an example of a network information center and acts as a mediator between customers and administrative agencies. Private companies such as webhosts or other internet service providers enable domain registration to happen separately or combine it with other services such as e-mail hosting. For customers, the ordering process is carried out in three steps:

Domain Privacy: Why You Need It & Where To Find It

The directorys primary purpose is to provide accountability in case of technical or legal issues. More often, though, it acts as a vast repository of convenient contacts for spammers, scammers and legit but annoying marketers.

That is so uncool.

Because theres a legitimate need for the contact information, you cant get out of providing it. But you also dont have to put your name, address and phone number on the internet essentially waiting for just the right Nigerian scammer to come along.

Thanks to proxy registration and domain privacy, you can trust your contact info to a service wholl keep them private. In the event someone has a bona-fide need to contact you, theyll go through the proxy whose information is listed in your record.

Even if someone has an actual product or service to sell, cold-calling contacts found in the WhoIs database is pretty much the internet equivalent of door-to-door sales. Before private registration was available we got those e-mails and calls alltheTIME.

Now? Never.

For years weve bought domain names only from registrars that offer private registration. Since moving to private registration, we have never been contacted by someone who found our info using a WhoIs directory search.

What You Should Know About Having Your Own E

Users wishing to register a personal e-mail domain can choose any top-level domain and an available domain name within the desired namespace. Its worth noting that domain names under a TLD can only be assigned once. The choice of available endings depends on the provider. If a desired name is assigned under a particular TLD, users can switch to another ending. The new domain endings offer the opportunity to create an expressive domain name or regional reference: booking@your.hotel info@company.newyork Be aware that the respective TLD authority defines the rules by which domain names are formed. All top-level domains can be formed with letters a-z, numbers 0-9, and hyphens. Theres no difference between capital and lower-case. Some TLDs also allow special characters in the domain, such as letters with accents. Generally the use of these characters in e-mail domains isnt recommended, as these domains can lead to problems with mail servers and e-mail programs.

A Couple Of Reasons Why You May Not Choose To Protect Your Domain Name

How to Start a Blog in 12 Easy Steps

At this point, domain privacy protection probably seems like a no-brainer, so why is it that so many domain owners do not automatically turn it on? Well aside from the lack of education or potential costs associated depending on your registrar, protecting your domain also means less transparency. Which also means that your potential customers, business partners or people who wish to buy your domain name will have a harder time getting in contact with you.

Having your information out there shows your customers or potential business partners your contact info, in case they decide to dig deeper and head over to WHOIS to find it. A good workaround here is to ensure that your contact information is always displayed on your website , including at the footer of your pages and in a Contact Us page. Alternatively, if you have your domain name registered at NameSilo, you can control whether you want emails sent to the anonymized address forwarded to you.

Of course, in most cases, the benefits of domain name privacy will outweigh the transparency issue. But if youre trying to decide whether protecting your domain is worth it, then you should definitely take both arguments into consideration and solve for the potential limitations as much as possible.

Should I Make My Domain Registration Private

When you register a domain, you can choose to make your contact information public or private but what are the advantages and disadvantages to this?

When you register a domain name, whether or not it’s a personal or business site, you’re asked to provide personal information. You can either publicly register the domain, which is what most people do, or you can privately register it. A public registration allows for anyone on the web to do a WHOIS search for any domain names you own, and the search results will return your street address, e-mail address, name, and any other information you’ve entered in. A private registration hides all of that information, but it can have certain drawbacks as well.

Avoid Getting Hacked/identity Theft

As weve already mentioned, the main goal of getting domain protection is to avoid just about anyone having access to the domain contact information youd rather keep to yourself. After all, how comfortable are you knowing that random strangers might have your phone number and could call you anytime they want?

In addition to being plain uncomfortable with your information out there, skipping out on domain privacy carries another massive risk with itgetting hacked and having your identity stolen. Hackers often try to target public WHOIS information to reverse socially engineer access to a registrants account or they will target the registrant with phishing attacks pretending to be the registrar.

And if youve thought about just providing fake information, we hate to inform you that ICANN requires the contact info on a domain name to be legitimate, meaning that theres really no way around it. If you enter fake information, you could lose your domain name if you miss the yearly WHOIS confirmation emails that registrars are required to send, as that will constitute a violation of terms and conditions.

In case domain protection doesnt go far enough for you, there are also plenty of ways you could make your website more secure.

So Is Private Registration Worth It

As I said, legal issues with domain ownership probably wont be an issue for you. The general rule of thinking is that domain registrars want repeat business. They want to keep making sales. In order to do that, they need to be trustworthy. If they start trying to steal domain names from people and get into legal battles, its going to drive customers away. They want you to keep coming back and paying for private registration.

So ultimately, its up to you to weigh the pros and cons. Are you okay with having your personal information released to the world? Are you okay with getting spam emails, phone calls, and snail mail?

Id say the best choice is to get a PO box and second email address, then fill out that information when registering a domain name. That way your home address and primary email address arent on display, and you dont have much of a need for private registration. But renting a PO box can be much more expensive than private registration, so it may not be ideal for everyone.

Is Private Domain Registration Worth It

A private registration domain is most certainly worth it if you wish to increase anonymity on the web and operate a website with an extra layer of security. Having the option of hiding your personal contact details will help you to concentrate on building your business without having to deal with mountains of spam email or other unsolicited contact. Online threats may also be reduced as hackers will not be able to access your personal details.

A private domain is also worth it if you currently use one of the supported TLDs which are: .com, .net, .org, .biz, .info, .mobi, .name, .cc, .tv, .mx, and .com.mx. If your website is already associated with one of these domains, then transferring to a private domain registration on renewal is simple. All you need to do is access the IONOS Control Panel and click the “manage domains” tab. From here you can follow the “edit domain settings” link and proceed to update your settings. Once you have selected the “private” option, please wait around 24 hours until WHOIS updates the information in its database.
