What If I Own The Domain But The Host Wont Give It Back

This is where youre in luck, and precisely why you should always keep your domain registered in your name. If you dont host the domain and dont have access to it, but it is registered in your name, then most of the time you can simply transfer it back directly through Nominet or the registrar in question.

What Happens When A Local Domain Expires

• The landing page will be replaced with a 1-grid home page.
• 0 5 days thereafter the domain will be suspended and set to inactive
• 5 10 days after expiration, the domain is set to pending deletion
• 10 30 days the domain is set to Closed Redemption period
• After 30 days the domain is released and available to the public for purchase
• If a third party purchases the domain name while the domain is available, the domain name will no longer be available for renewal on your account.

How A Domain Expires

Contrary to popular belief, domains do not expire when they say they do. If the owner of a domain does not renew by the expiration date of the domain, the domain goes into expired status. For 40 days, the domain is in a grace period where all services are shut off, but the domain owner may still renew the domain for a standard renewal fee. If a domain enters this period, it is a good first indicator that it may not be renewed, but since the owner can re-register without penalty, it can also just be a sign of laziness or procrastination.

After 40 days are up, the domains status changes to redemption period. During this phase, all WhoIs information begins disappearing, and more importantly, it now costs the owner an additional fee to re-activate and re-register the domain. The fee is currently around $100, depending on your registrar. When a domain enters its redemption period, its a good bet the owner has decided not to renew.

Finally, after the redemption period, the domains status will change to locked as it enters the deletion phase. The deletion phase is 5 days long, and on the last day between 11am and 2pm Pacific time, the name will officially drop from the ICANN database and will be available for registration by anybody.

What Do I Do If I Lose Access To My Domain

It can be very difficult to get a domain back if someone else is technically the owner, even if youve been paying them to host it for you. The first thing to do is simply ask politely for it to be transferred to you. Its a very quick task, so there shouldnt really be any cost involved in this, but if the web designer or agency in question asks for a reasonable fee for their time its probably worth paying it just to get the domain back. If the owner refuses however, then things can get tricky, and can often result in a long, drawn-out court battle.

• The Registry is the name of the organisation that is responsible for maintaining the record of domain names for a given top-level domain like .com or .org.
• The Registrar is an organisation that is authorised to register domain names.
• The Reseller is a person of company that sells domain names on behalf of a registrar.

Can I Transfer My Domain Name To Hostinger

Yes, its possible to transfer a domain name from another registrar to Hostinger.

However, there are a few requirements before transferring a domain to your web hosting account:

• More than 60 days must have passed from the registration or last transfer date.
• You must have the domains auth-code from your current registrar.
• The domains WHOIS privacy protection has to be disabled.
• You have to point your domain name to Hostinger.
• The domains status cannot be Pending Delete or Redemption.

To transfer a domain to Hostinger, go to the Hostinger Transfer Domain page and enter your domain name. Then click Transfer.

After finishing the order and entering the domain EPP code, the transfer process will begin and youll receive an email regarding the domain transfer that you will have to confirm.

The domain registration will also be renewed for a year after the transfer, except for ccTLDs like .es, .co.uk, or .com.br.

Keep in mind that your website might be unavailable during the DNS changes, which can take up to 24 hours to propagate fully.

Establish A Purpose And Move Forward

Typically, what you do at this phase is just add some links to your money site, or at least a site in your blog network, to link things up. If youre linking to your main site, try to find in-context opportunities for links from some content to other content, rather than linking direct to a landing page or homepage.

You can also choose to run the site as if it was your own, and put more effort into it. If you do this, it might pay to slowly replace all of the old content and branding with your own, so you have more control and less of a chance that the previous owner will take umbrage.

Whatever you choose to do with the site, do it quickly expired domains lose value sharply if they arent re-upped, so you dont have a lot of time to go through this whole process before it becomes no longer valuable to do so.

For Those Who Signed Up With Their Web Host Themselves

If you are one of the people who actually followedmy guide faithfullyand only got a designer after you’ve personally signed up for a domain name and a web host, and you’re payingthe bills directly to your registrar and web host, you probably don’t need to do the things mentioned in this articleto regain control of your website.

Even if your web developer has changed the password for your web hosting accountto lock you out, you can get it back. Simply contact your web host and explain the situation. You may have to verifythat you’re the real owner, but that’s usually quite easy to do if you’re their customer on recordand are paying the bills directly to them. Your web host will probably just change the password to a new one of yourchoosing, and you’ll have regained control of your site.

Of course if your web host and your web designer are one and the same, this won’t work for you.

What If Its Too Late For Good Hygiene

If youve already lost access to your account and cant renew your domain name, its important to act quickly to secure it. If your name does not appear on the domains WHOIS record, then you likely havent been getting renewal notices. That means the first sign of trouble might be your website going down, or clients no longer receiving your emails.

If the domain is expired, you have two options. First, you can reach out to the person whose name appears on the WHOIS record and ask them to transfer the domain to you. This option rarely works due to the circumstances surrounding the three Ds, as outlined above.

Your next best option, then, is to go through a primary contact change process. This process differs from company to company, but the general steps are similar in most cases.

Youll start by reaching out to your customer service agent to let them know that your domain name is expired. Tell them you do not have access to the email address on file, but you do have proof of identity. Expect them to ask you to provide identifying information, such as a fax of your drivers license. Think of this step as being a bit like entering the DMV of the domain world.

Be Ready To Prove Previous And Recent Ownership Of The Lost Domain

Iâve been contacted by individuals about reclaiming lost domain names. They were able to prove the legitimacy of previous ownership without a shadow of a doubt. In return, I transfer the domain at cost or no cost, if under a certain amount.

But Iâve also had people try to get over on me too with a sob story of how they lost a domain that was never theirs, to begin with. In short, they are essentially trying to steal the domain from me.

Nevertheless, contact the new domain owner to explain your situation of how the domain was lost. But donât count the new owner rolling over and just handing over domain because of your story. Always make a reasonable, market-driven offer when contacting a domain owner. Understand their asking price may not be cheap at all.

Most honest domainers aim to work a reasonably priced deal of some sort with you. You may have to legitimately prove previous ownership of the lost domain name that are in question. In some cases, domainers gladly return lost domain names to you at no cost but donât count on it.

See, if the new owner of the lost domain has paid money using either a backorder service or bought the domain name via an expired domain auction, then you may very well have to pay the new domain owner the amount that they paid for the lost or expired domain name.

This reason alone makes reclaiming lost domain names a very costly experience.

V Renewing Your Domain Name

When you register a domain name, you’re able to use it for the period of time you registered it for, which is typically between one to ten years. If you want to keep using the domain name and any of the services associated with it you need to renew the domain name registration prior to its expiration. If you don’t, you risk losing your domain name. ICANN does not have the authority to transfer domain names, including expired ones, back to you.

How do you avoid losing your domain name and causing significant disruption or damage to the information, service, brand or business associated with it? Here are a few pointers to help you avoid the hassle of disruptions, or the possibility of losing your domain name altogether:
