How To Forward A Domain

Option 2 Redirecting To The Secure Version Of The Same Site

How to Forward a Domain in Google Domains (permanent redirect)

It’s not possible to use the panel’s Redirect option to redirect to HTTPS as this removes hosting from the domain. For example:

http://example.com to https://example.com

This is also not necessary since after you have added an SSL certificate to your domain, DreamHost automatically redirects the URL visitors use to view your site from HTTP to HTTPS. The S ensures that your connection is encrypted. For example:

There’s nothing on your end you must do in order to force your site to use the secure URL. However, in some special cases, it may be necessary for you to create your own custom configuration file to force the redirect from HTTP to HTTPS.

Adding custom code is only necessary if your website requires specific code to force the redirect. If so, you will need to first disable the automatic redirect in your panel.

Masking Domains At Work

Why would you want to use masking? My real estate friends website has a really long URL: companyname.com/alotofrandomcharacters/his name. He forwards his shorter domain names with masking to HIS page on their site because his customers dont need to see the actual URL.

He actually has about nine domains he forwards with masking to his company page. Apparently some people know him as Richard and some as Rick and his family calls him Ricky. He also purchases domains with the addresses of properties he highlights and then forwards each domain to that propertys page on his site. Smart.

Three Ways To Redirect A Domain Name

Framed forwarding after typing domain name A, a user will see the content of domain name B displayed in an IFRAME . This method keeps domain name A in the URL bar.

Permanent 301 direct having typed domain name A, a user is automatically redirected to domain name B, with domain name B shown in the URL bar. The 301 direct also tells search engines, “domain name A has permanently moved to domain name B, please update your indexes”.

Temporary 302 direct similar to 301 direct but the message to search engines is, “please DON’T update your indexes as this is a temporary move”.

Domain Name Redirection Is The Way To Go

  • Having registered a new domain name, you now want to use it with your existing website. Alternatively, you want to forward your new domain name to your old website.
  • You’ve registered multiple domain names similar to your primary address. They’re to cover misspells, plurals, fat fingers, and different extensions, and they need redirecting.
  • You want a short, memorable and relevant URL to use on social media.

How To Enable Https Forwarding In Your Webnames Account

How To Forward Domain Email with CPanel

HTTPS Forwarding on the root domain: If you have purchased Advanced DNS or Premium DNS for the domain name you wish to forward, all you need to do is to setup forwarding from the Domain Management > DNS Hosting as indicated in the below screenshot. It just works!

Once you enter the forwarding destination and apply changes, Webnames will automatically issue and install an SSL for this domain, and enable secure HTTPS forwarding for the root domain.

HTTPS URL redirection for specific pages under a domain: You still require Premium or Advanced DNS Hosting and can use the Root URL Forwarding section , your destination domain name must include a trailing / at the end. For example, the destination domain should be entered as and this will ensure that a specific sub-page URL on the forwarded domain will redirect to the respective sub-page on the destination, as described in the below table.

HTTPS URL forwarding for subdomains: You will need Webnames Premium DNS enabled on the domain name. To redirect a subdomain such as blog.yourbiz.ca using HTTPS, open Domain Management > DNS Hosting and scroll down to the Subdomain URL redirect section to create redirects.

If your website already has SSL configured and you wish to only redirect paths on one domain to another page on the same domain, you can modify .HTACCESS on your web hosting and configure the HTACCESS file for both URL redirection and to force HTTPS.

Before you begin, please note these things:

  • In the following sections, you will be creating or modifying a file named .htaccess on your web server.Note carefully the name of the file — it starts with a full stop and hasno additional extension .

The .htaccess file is a simple ASCII text file, so to create it, you should use aplain text editor andnot a word processor like Word, Wordpad, Write, OpenOffice, etc. If you use Windows, you may use Notepad, but be sure to read my article onHow to Save a Filewith Notepad Without the TXT Extension otherwise Notepad will invisibly add a “.txt” extension behind your back. You won’t be able to spot this extension in Windows Explorer in the default Windows configuration.

  • You should also standardize all the links on your website to use the form you want. For example, if you want www.example.com, make sure thatall your internal links use that form .

If you prefer your website to be referred to as www.example.com, with the “www” prefix, read the section on how to transparently add the “www” prefix toyour domain name. However, if you want your site to be referred to as example.com, without “www”,skip to the section on how to remove the “www” prefixfrom your domain name.

Incidentally, it doesn’t matter which you choose. The main thing is to choose one and stick with it. It’s probably best to choose the form that ismost widely used by other sites to link to you instead of randomly picking one.

What Is A Url How Is It Different From A Domain Name

Domain Name Forwarding – How To Redirect One Domain to Another Domain – Simple Steps One Caveat

You usually see this at the top of a web page we commonly call it a URL. In more technical terms, it is the universal resource locator. This combination of letters and numbers includes all the info your PC needs to locate the correct page, image, document, or video on a website.

The domain name you choose for your website is included in the URL, but a domain is not the same as a URL. If we want to put it more simply, a URL is a map that tells your PC where you want to go online. But these are not the only parts of a URL. There’s also what we call TLD.

A TLD is the tail of the URL for example, in www.several.com, ‘.com’ is the top-level domain. To its left, you will find the domain name. Once you have the domain name and the top-level domain typed, your PC will know where to go online.

Another part of the URL is the ‘HTTP://,’ which stands for Secure Hypertext Transfer Protocol. A protocol serves as a command that tells your PC to scan the following info as hypertext .

The Problem Explained In Greater Detail

Having your site referred to as both example.com and www.example.com is not a problem ofconsistency. Neither is it an issue that affects branding, since most humans looking at those twonames will automatically assume they are referring to the same thing. In fact, most humans, when told to go to a domainlike “thesitewizard.com” will automatically type “www.thesitewizard.com” in their browsers, since this is the waythe majority of the websites on the Internet work, and they know it. So the problem isn’t really with human beings at all.

It is a problem with search engines.

When you have two different addresses pointing to the same page, like www.example.com/offers.html andexample.com/offers.html, many search engines will treat those two URLs as two separate pages. When you, as a human, see those two pages and notice they are identical, you will automatically realise that they are actually the same page. Apparently, the search engines do not make this assumption, and will regard those asdifferent pages with duplicate content.

The problem with duplicatecontent is a topic I have written on before, so I will not repeat myself here. You can learn more about it from myarticle How to Createa Search Engine Friendly Website.

    What Is A Website Redirect

    GoDaddy

A website redirect points your old URL to a new page. When anyone types in or clicks on that original URL theyll be taken to the page you set the redirect up to instead. It ensures visitors dont end up on a 404 page and instead find something relevant to what they were originally looking for. And it keeps you from losing the value of any links youve built to that pagewhich is important for search engine optimization , as well as the user experience of anyone that clicks one of those links.

Knowing how to set up a redirect is a valuable skill for anyone that runs a website. You can implement redirects on a page-by-page basis, or at the domain level.
