Negotiate A Price That Works For Both Of You

How To Find A Good Domain Name for Your Website

When you get in contact, negotiate a fair price. Look up the domains history on the Wayback Machine and check out the domains Domain Authority to get a sense of its value. You can use tools such as Moz or Ahrefs to get this number.

Once you settle on a price, use Escrow to facilitate payment. Do not use your personal PayPal, Venmo, or Zelle account.

Policy For Domain Expiration

Once a domain has expired, anyone else can purchase it and run their own website on that URL, locking out your business in the process. If it happens, youll be forced to buy back the domain name at a higher cost, or you may permanently lose its access.

Before you get a domain name, check the domain expiration policy of your registrar. Though most companies automatically auto-renew your domain, you must confirm it before the purchase.

Post-expiration, reputed registration companies also lock the purchased domain to your account for a grace period, so you can renew it.

User Experience And Reminders

Finally, user experience is a crucial criterion to consider before going for a registrar company. The website of the company should be easy to navigate and intuitive. You must quickly find out the necessary information from the registrars website should you face any issues.

A registrar with a knowledge base is highly useful when support is not available immediately. Timely renewal of the domain name is essential for you to prevent losing its ownership.

When the time comes for domain renewal, an ideal registrar will send you an automated reminder before the domain expires. If you havent activated auto-renewal or got a new credit card, this feature will benefit you.

Like Wix, Weebly offers a simple website builder with a free domain name that will appear as yourwebsite.weebly.com. You will have limited access to the site-building features, but you will save annual fees for domain names. This is a great option for temporary or basic websites.

Using Publicly Available Information

How to Find Out Where Your Domain Name is Registered
  • 1Search Google for âdomain nameâ contact. If the domain ever had a public registration record, someone may have archived that information publicly.
  • 2Check the websiteâs About or Contact page. If the domain has a website that contains one of these links, you may find the name and/or contact information for the siteâs owner.
  • The person who runs the website may not be the person who owns the domain. The only way to find out for sure would be to contact the siteâs owner and ask.
  • If you canât find links to these pages, try adding sitemap.xml to the end of the domain name in the address bar and pressing âµ Enter or â Return. Look through the URLs on that page for an âAboutâ page, or something similar that might contain personal or contact info.
  • 3Find social media accounts using the same name. For example, if youâre searching for the owner of wikiHow.com, you could figure out who is using the name wikiHow as their username on various social media networks. Thereâs a chance that the user is the person who registered the domain name.
  • Most social media networks will require that you create an account before searching their user database.
  • 4Use the Whois History tool. If the domainâs owner used to have a public registration record, you may be able to find them using a tool called Whois History.XResearch source This tool provides all of the registration records ever created for the domain.
  • This service requires a paid subscription.

How Long Does A Domain Name Registration Last

The minimum registration period for domain names is one year. With Hostinger, you can also register .com, .net, .org, and other domains for up to three years.

If you want to remain the current owner of your domain and make sure that it is always registered to you and your website, we recommend setting up automatic renewal.

    Contact The Domain Name Owner

If one of the steps above leads you to the website owner, its time to reach out! Craft an email letting them know that youre interested in purchasing the domain.

To avoid looking like spam, make sure your email conveys seriousness and professionalism. If you have a professional email address at a domain name you own, that will look more legitimate than one from a yahoo or aol account. If not, consider at least setting up a gmail address, which looks a bit more respectable.

    Make sure your email includes:

    • Your contact information both email and phone, so its easy for them to choose the method they prefer.
    • Language that makes it clear youre willing to pay you may not want to include a specific offer yet , but theyre more likely to respond if they know this is a genuine business offer
    • Something that shows your legitimacy how can you show youre a real person with serious intent? Maybe thats a link to a website you already run or a LinkedIn profile.

People get a lot of spam emails, so you want to clarify that youre a real person with real interest. If you can pull that off, the chances of getting a response are much higher.

    How Is Whois Changing

In light of the General Data Protection Regulation, or GDPR, coming into force within the European Union in May 2018, many Registries and Registrars that operate within that region, or globally, are required to gain Registrant’s consent before disclosing Personally Identifiable Information to any third parties or the public. As a result of the implementation of the GDRP, much of the data historically found within WHOIS will no longer be included or be redacted. The absence of this information has a trickle-down effect throughout the domain industry, affecting WHOIS data output for domain names and Registrants that do not have an immediate or obvious nexus to the European Union

What Does It Mean To Own A Domain Name

Although people often speak of buying and owning domain names, the truth is that registries own all of their domain names and registrars simply offer customers the opportunity to reserve those domain names for a limited amount of time.

The maximum reservation period for a domain name is ten years. A user can hold onto a domain name for longer than ten years, as registrars usually let them keep renewing their reservation indefinitely. But the user never truly owns the domain they just lease it.

Wouldnt it be nice to know who owned a certain website? Previously, I wrote about how you can find out who is hosting a website, but that only tells you where the server is located. If you want to verify the owner of a domain name or see when one expires , performing a WHOIS lookup is the way to go.

If you perform a search in Google for WHOIS, youll get a bunch of results, but normally the first one is whois.net. By visiting www.whois.net, you can not only find out who owns a certain domain name, but also when it was purchased and more importantly, when it is due to expire.

Looking up a domain name on www.whois.net is very simple. All you have to do is enter in the web address you want to look up and presto all the information you wanted will appear. For example, if you look up the website address for the WHOIS site, you will find out some important information. In the screen shot below, we can tell that the domain name was purchased in 1997 and they have paid for it through 2018 .

While WHOIS is a great reference for when you want to find information about someone elses website, but it can be a problem when its the other way around. When purchasing a domain or even afterwards, most companies provide a private registration benefit that will remove any personal information about the owner.
