How To Find Your Web Host Provider

The registry operator, or Network Information Center , is the issuing agency of a domain name registry that is responsible for managing all top-level domains in its database. It is also in charge of transferring domains. To do this, an authentication code, or auth code, must be obtained in order to transfer authority from the old registrar to the new one.

Whys It Necessary To Have A Whois Database

The ability to find domain info quickly and accurately is important for a couple main reasons: 1. A WHOIS check is essential for people in the business of buying and selling domains. These individuals need a method of communication for their transactions. A WHOIS search will provide one or more methods for reaching the current owner of a web address. 2. The WHOIS database is a way to maintain accountability for people who operate online. For example, if you felt someone was using your trademarks on their website, the WHOIS database provides a number of ways to resolve that dispute.

Find Out More About Those Ip Addresses

Now, to find out more about those IP addresses, you need to do a reverse DNS lookup. Again, since DNS turns a domain into an IP address, you need to reverse that since were following the trail backwards.

In our example, the IP address for tonyherman.com is 34.230.210.117. Lets head over to MXToolbox and do that lookup:

The result is that its showing my website is hosted at:

    ec2-34-230-210-117.compute-1.amazonaws.com

but thats not actually true. In a lot of cases, this will give you the final answer but Im using a CDN called Ezoic, which helps speed up my website and they are using the Amazon Cloud to support their network. So this is a little bit of a dead end for this example . If you end up in this case, there may be a workaround.

If this applies to you, then go to SecurityTrails and do the same lookup in their historical DNS records.

There, we can see the 67.192.51.67 IP address, which is at our host, Rackspace, and thats where the site is actually hosted. You can set your computers host file to check this if you want.

    At this point, you know:

    • Where the domain is registered
    • Where the DNS is hosted
    • The IP address of the website hosting
    • The IP address or host for email
    • The website host

    A Quick Understanding Of Email

Find Your Domain Registrar or DNS Hosting Provider

Before moving on, please make sure you understand a few things :

    • All your email is at one host its not divided up. For example, user1@yourdomain.com and user28@yourdomain.com all use the same hosting company. You cannot have multiple companies hosting your email.
    • Email can be web-based or client-based. Web based is like GMail. You use your web browser to view it. Client-based is like using Outlook, Apple Mail or Thunderbird its a separate program you start and its not in your web browser.
    • If you use client-based email, you may have different sending and receiving hosts. You may login to one host to check/receive email and another host to send email.
    • Your receiving email host is either using POP3 or IMAP.
    • Your sending email host is using SMTP.
  • If youre keeping your email on the server and checking it from multiple locations or devices, then youre probably using the IMAP protocol .
  • If youre downloading your email every time you check it and clearing it off the server, then youre using POP3 as the protocol youre using email.
  • Email can also be forwarding from one place to another, so make sure youre checking for things like that.
  • Email can be a little tricky but there is a path you can follow and get answers, so dont give up!

How Exactly Does A Domain Transfer Work

In principle, transferring a domain from one provider to another works the same way with every web hosting provider. Nevertheless, you should always be aware in advance of the details of each individual transfer, which can vary from site to site. The fundamental procedure of a domain transfer is as follows:

    • Backup data: before approaching the new providers database, you should first save backups of all data that is saved on the old providers server. Whether its saved on your computer or an external harddrive, you should back up all your files . You wont be able to access the files on your old domain provider once youve changed, which means you risk losing the entire structure of your website.
    • Auth code: you need an authentication code, or auth code, in order to authorize a domain transfer. This authentication code works to verify that your domain is registered under your name. The code can be obtained from your previous hosting provider or registrar. You can also inform your current provider that you will take your domain to another host and cancel your contract.
    • Import the database: once your domain has been registered and activated by the new provider, you can transfer your websites data to the new server.

To check the status of the services in Windows Server, we will use PowerShell. With this in mind, press the Win+X combination and launch it:

Once the console is deployed, run the following cmdlet to check the status of the services. Indeed, for everything to be in order, the command must show that the services are running. Otherwise, if any service is stopped, it may cause problems in the system.

As you can see in the picture, all services are running successfully.

    Uncovering Secrets With Dns

Every domain has DNS info that is public. You can browse this on many sites but I like to use leafdns.com. DNS is what points domain services to different servers like pointing your email to Google and your website to Bluehost. This may not tell you who owns your domain but it can tell you HOW your domain is being used which may be an important step in recovering your website files if youve lost those in addition to the domain. I often use this when Im on a call and a prospect doesnt even know where their site is hosted. It makes me look really smart!

    Use Whois Or Icann Lookup

In case you are unable to find your billing records, you can search for your domain registrar online. Simple WHOIS inquiries will tell you what the registrar knows about your domain name. The WHOIS domain database is a listing of all registered domains and is regularly used for various legal purposes.

Typically, public WHOIS records show the domain owners contact email, street address, phone, and fax numbers. Thats unless the owner is using a domain privacy feature such as IDProtect.

Additionally, a WHOIS service will also show the current registrar, DNS servers, and the domain names creation and expiration dates. To find out who your domain registrar is, you can use a WHOIS service such as who.is. Follow the steps below:

    • Input your domain name in the bar above your displayed IP address
    • On the results page, see the information in the Registrar Info block. You will find your domain registrars name, along with their website.

Alternatively, you can use ICANN Lookup to find your domain name registrar:

    • In the search field, enter your domain name
    • Click on Lookup
    • On the results page, scroll down to Registrar Information:

How To Find Out Who The Domain Owner Is

Youve spent time brainstorming domain names. Youve tried different domain suggestion tools. And youve finally figured out the perfect name.

But when you go to register the domain name youre set on, you find that someone has already claimed it. What a disappointment.

Before you give up on that perfect name and start the whole process again from scratch, know there might still be hope.

Registered domain names are sometimes still availableif you know how to find the owner.

People invest in domain names for a number of different reasons. Sometimes, its to start their own website at that domain. Sometimes its purely for investment purposes. And in a few cases, it may be for a website idea that either never comes to fruition, or that falls off the owners radar over time.

If the website youre interested in isnt being actively used and updated, then the owner may be happy to hear from an interested buyer. And even if the owner is clearly using the domain name right now, if youre willing to spend enough to make a sale worth it to them you may still have a chance.

In both cases, you should anticipate spending more for the domain name than if you went with something no one else owns yet. But if youre really set on that domain name, its worth trying your chances.

    Updating A Domains Nameservers

Its very common to update a domains nameservers. Typically, someone will update the nameservers on a domain when they move to another web hosting provider. It is very important to note that when nameservers are updated to point somewhere else this changes who manages DNS for the domain . You need to be very careful not to disrupt other services on that domain.

As weve outlined above, the domains nameservers indicate where DNS is managed. If a domain has existing DNS records that you dont copy over to the new DNS provider you will see issues such as downtime or interruption in services. If those DNS records were for certain services such as email through G Suite you will see an interruption in email services if you do not replicate the G Suite MX records into the new DNS provider.

Lets go back and explore G Suite. Were going to update who manages DNS by updating our domain to point from Googles nameservers to PeoplesHost nameservers. If your DNS provider isnt Google dont worry. Once youve figured out who your domains DNS provider is youll be able to access DNS on that domain in a similar fashion as shown below.

Since Google is currently managing DNS for this example were going to log into our Google Domains account to manage the domains DNS and update where the nameservers point to. In the Google Domains dashboard click the Manage button next to the domain youre going to update.

    What Is The Whois Database

As per ICANN regulations, when a domain name is registered, registrants need to provide registrars with up-to-date contact information.

This info is displayed publicly in the Whois data source, which acts like a gigantic personal digital assistant that anybody can see.

For example, WHOIS database can be used to check domain availability, maintain domain name registrants responsibly, and also determine trademark violations.

WHOIS confirmation can even be utilized to deal with spam or fraudulence, as administrators can track down registrants who post illegal web content or take part in phishing scams.

Additionally, the arrangements from the ICANN shield domain registrants by banning the use of WHOIS listings for advertising and marketing or spam functions, including high-volume, automatic inquiries versus a particular registrar or registry information system.
