While changing your Shopify store name is possible, its best to avoid doing so. Unless you plan a full rebranding at some point, its best to choose your Shopify store name carefully and run with it.

The Steps For Connecting Your External Domain:

These are the quick steps for connecting your domain. Well talk more about each step in future.

  • First create a free Cloudflare account if you dont have one. CF is a reliable platfrom that provides various web services. Using the cloudflare DNS service is free. With Shopify well only use the DNS part of Cloudflare.
  • Secondly, connect your domain on cloudflare by changing your Name-servers to point to the Cloudflare nameservers. CF will give you new nameservers. Take them and add them wherver you bought your domain from.
  • Log into your Shopify store and add your domain . Choose to add an external domain . Add the same domain you added on CF. Shopify will provide you with various DNS records. To get the DNS records, click the Verify Connection button. Youll get a CNAME record for WWW and an A record that points to an IP address. Add these to CF.
  • Take the records you have been given and add them on Coudflare. On Cloudflare, under the DNS tab, add the records you got from Shopify. Give time for propagation.
  • Next go back to Shopify and confirm to add/connect the domain even if it has not fully been propagated and identified by Shopify correctly. The confirmation takes some time.
  • Once the domain has fully been confirmed and connected on Shopify, feel free to make it the primary domain for your online store

    • Transfer a domain to Shopify, or
    • Buy a new domain.

Shopify domain names, by default, have the yourstorename.myshopify.com URL.

You can convert this into a proper www.yourbrandname.store URL by purchasing a domain from Shopify for a fee. If you have already purchased a domain from an external web hosting company like Godaddy, all you need to do is connect it with Shopify to use it as your online stores address.

You can also transfer your domain to Shopify if you want to pay a single provider rather than paying your domain host and Shopify separately.

    How To Transfer A Domain

When a domain is transferred, management of that domain moves to Shopify, which means you adjust your domain settings, pay for that domain and renew your domain right in your Shopify Admin panel. Shopify does not come with email accounts as part of its domain services. However, it does include unrestricted email forwarding accounts for your domain name.

To transfer a domain to Shopify, first, you need to have signed up your domain more than 60 previous days and have access to your original domain provider account. Please kindly note that to transfer your domain, you will need to keep an eye on and respond to important confirmation emails. Then, it takes you no more than 20 days from the time of initiation until the transfer gets completed.

Also, note that you have to pay for your domain annually to have it in use. For instance, if you have 3 months left until your domains expiration and then you transfer your domain to Shopify and add 12 more months of registration, you will not have to renew your domain for 15 months.

How to Change Domain Name in Shopify

If you change your domain name, you give yourself and your store the chance to have a distinctive identity online since the same domain name can’t be registered more than once. Remember, your domain name is as essential to your brand as your business name.

A domain name that uses strategic keywords makes it clear to visitors and casual browsers what your business is about and helps rank on Google. This is not only valuable but necessary for marketing purposes. In addition, a unique domain name can help your business stand out among competitors.

It’s best to use short Shopify domain names they are easy to remember and type, avoiding unnecessary mistakes that may land potential customers on other people’s sites.

How to change your Shopify domain is fast and easy. Here are three easy steps.

Don’t Miss: How Do I Get My Own Domain

    What Is My Shopify Domain

A domain is the website address, also called a URL, where people can find your store on the internet.

When you first create a Shopify account youâre asked to choose a store name. This store name is used to dynamically create your Shopify domain in the format https://yourstorename.myshopify.com. This domain is initially set as your primary domain.

This domain is used for logging into your Shopify admin dashboard. It can also be used as your customer facing URL but we strongly advise against it. Instead, we recommend you buy and use your own branded custom domain name to build credibility and trust. Customers want to do business with your brand not with Shopify.

    Free Domains From Website Builders

Website builders typically offer a free domain name when you sign up to their services, however the website domain usually includes their brand name in the URL and, unlike paid domains, they are not transferable to other service providers.

For example, when you start a Shopify store, youll be provided a free .myshopify.com domain that can be used as your stores primary domain. WordPress, Squarespace, Wix, and Weebly offer free domains that contain their own business name as well.

These default domains provide the same basic function as a custom domain, but come with a lot of downsides theyre harder for users to remember, they look less professional, and they dont come with features like email forwarding or the option to create subdomains.

You also wont be able to use these domains outside the platform theyre affiliated with. That means that even if you wanted to use a third-party service provider to add features like email hosting, you wouldnt be able to.

Generally speaking, its a good idea to purchase a custom domain. Domain registration isnt too expensive, and the charge is worth it for the advantage of being able to customize, transfer, and manage your own domain.

Shuang: So you gain this initial group of customers with partnerships with Groupon, how do you then transfer them over to your own site and turn them into returning customers?

We started with email. So we had a CRM, and we started emailing them directly saying, âHey, we caught too much lobster, and we need to ship you some, hereâs a good deal.â That was our first stage. And then platform, platform, platform, then we started doing Facebook and Google in the beginning, not a lot of success, really high marketing costs, not a huge return. So then we just got better at it. And then finally, we went to Shopify Plus, which had all the bells and whistles that would not only help us be attractive but also convert and increase cart rate. From the beginning to today is like, night and day as it relates to the platform as a whole.

Shuang: For those initial iterations of spending social ads on Facebook or optimizing research with Google, what did you tweak to understand and get better performance throughout the years?

Shuang: What was that process like adding in additional product offerings?

Shuang: How many customers are getting the live lobsters and how much of the proportion are actually just getting the ready-made meals?

So the biggest thing is lobster rolls and lobster tails. Only about 25% is live lobster. And of that 25%, 75% arrives on a Friday, which is interesting. But lobster tails and lobster rolls by far, highest velocity skew in our store.

There are four things to do at this stage.

Now, with the correct CNAME record in place, lets verify the new domain.

Tips On Choosing The Right Domain Name

It is difficult to create an outstanding domain name. First, you need to think about long-term goals. Do not forget that it is problematic to change the domain name later as you would likely lose some of your clients. Another bit of advice is that it is better to make the domain name short, but at the same time not too brief as a customer will not understand the name and the purpose of the site and, therefore, the person wont be able to find the website next time.

Also, choose a name that is not too similar to others customers get confused. Therefore, a unique name provides you with the advantage of brand recollection among your visitors. Moreover, try not to be boring and ordinary. Researchers have found that a person will remember strange and unusual things for a longer time than ordinary things. Finally, do not use complicated words, as the domain name should be easy to type and pronounce.
