Verify That The Domain Name Is Eligible For Transfer
To make sure your domain name can be transferred, sign in to your current Registrar and check the following:
- The initial registration of the domain name was at least 60 days ago and the domain has been with your current Registrar for at least 60 days:
Per ICANN’s Policy on Transfer of Registrations between Registrars, domains that are less than 60 days old or were transferred between Registrars within the last 60 days cannot be transferred. Please wait at least 60 days before transferring.
- The domain name is not on hold with your current Registrar.
Be As Patient As Possible
Unfortunately its not an exact science with so many variables that can go wrong. Once you or your web company initiates the transfer its completely out of everyones hands and its up to the two hosting companies involved to complete the transfer. Even once they have done their part the domains need to propagate across the world so everyone sees the same thing. Once you consider this you will understand why some hosting companies quote up to 72 hours. Im not trying scare you in anyway, but just trying be realistic as possible so you know what to expect.

Check Your Transfer Status
Domain transfers will be initiated only after payment has been made. Once the transfer has initialized, be sure to watch for an incoming confirmation letter to the email address listed on the domain WHOIS. The domain transfer should be decided within 7 days from the date listed in the confirmation letter. If the transfer was successful, then the domain’s new information should appear when using a public WHOIS lookup tool.
If your domain is not available to be managed at after successfully being transferred, or if you would like a more detailed information regarding your transfer status, please contact us via phone or Live Chat for assistance.
Update Your Contact Information
Both the registrar you’re leaving and your new DNS registry provider will need to contact you during the transfer process. As a result, it’s critical that your contact information is up to date.
Log in to your current registrar’s control panel and check your account details. Make sure your name, phone number, and physical address are all correct any missing information could cause the transfer to take longer or be rejected.

Authorize The Domain Transfer
Once you enter the authorization code, you’ll be contacted by both your old registrar and your new provider. You’ll be asked to confirm your contact details and officially approve the transfer. Is Transferring The Domain Entirely The Best Option
As discussed above in How do I transfer my domain? There are lots of different ways you can control where your domain points. If you are perfectly happy with your current domain registrant, but are having a new website build and need to point the domain to this new site consider instead a simple Nameservers or A Record change where the domain stays where it is and simply points to the new site. The process is a lot easier and often takes half the amount of time and also means there is no down time to your emails.

Will My Site And Email Be Down While The Transfer Takes Place
Unfortunately yes. Again you should plan ahead picking your quietest time for instance so that the transfer can take place. Depending on your provider and the suffix, the transfer process can take anything up to 24-72 hours, but in our experience the bottom time scale is more realistic. Make sure you have backed up all you previous email and maybe prepared a temporary or Microsoft Hotmail email account to warn all your contacts of the down time. You should also make sure your new account is set up ready to receive email as soon as your domain has been transferred.
How Do I Transfer My Domain Name To A New Registrar
If you wish to move your domain name from one ICANN-accredited registrar to another, you may initiate the transfer process by contacting the registrar to which you wish to transfer the name. Note that there are certain situations that can prevent a domain name from being transferred, such as if it is subject to a 60-day Change of Registrant lock. See FAQ #8 for more information. Absent any valid reasons a transfer request cannot be processed, the registrar will confirm your intent to transfer your domain name using the Initial Authorization for Registrar Transfer form. If you do not respond or return the form to the registrar, your transfer request will not be processed. Please note that as of 25 May 2018, if the gaining registrar cannot access registration data for a name subject to a transfer, then the gaining registrar is not required to obtain the Form of Authorization from the Transfer Contact.
Your current registrar must also verify your intent to transfer using the Confirmation of Registrar Transfer Request form. for more information on Transferring Your Domain Name.

Will It Cost Me Anything
9 times out of 10 it should cost you very little if anything at all, with careful planning as discussed in our top tips there should be virtually nothing to pay. If you are transferring the domain to your new web designers, with careful negotiation at the start, the cost of re-registering the domain with their hosts and the setting up of all your associated email addresses should be included in the cost of the project. You will normally pay upfront for the next years hosting, but this is a cost you would have had to pay your existing company anyway.
