Transfer The Domain To Your Name

Finally, you need to find an ICANN-accredited registrar for your new domain so that you can transfer ownership to your name. You can use the same registrar the old domain owner used.

While many registrars have their internal transfer process, most require you to confirm that the old owner has sold you the domain and that you are the new owner. The registrar will then process the transfer and notify both parties once the transfer is complete. The domain transfer process may take up to 60 days, and you may need to pay a fee.

If the old owner purchased the domain less than 60 days ago, the domain might be subject to a Change of Registrant lock. Youll need to wait until this period passes to change ownership.

Choose The Right Domain Extension

When picking the extension or TLD for your domain name, .com is still the best choice unless you have a reason to choose something else.

While Google confirms that your choice of TLD will not impact rankings, it does affect consumer perception. Many people view other TLDs as less trustworthy.

That said, .net or .org extensions are not uncommon, so they can be good secondary options if you find the perfect name and the coveted .com isnt available.

But if you do decide to go with an extension other than a .com, make sure you take a look at what type of website is currently on the .com extension. Someone is bound to go there accidentally while looking for your brand. If the site holds fishy or offensive content, you might want to steer clear of that name altogether.

Does A Domain Name Registration Expire And What Happens If It Does Before I Renew It

When you register a domain name, youll see the registration date as well as the expiration date. Every domain name expires at some point, whether thats in a year, a couple of years, or a decade. You can save time by buying a domain with a longer expiration date. In any case, youll need to manually renew your domain when that expiration date is approaching.

The good news is that you can renew your domain name registration before it expires, which allows you to keep your domain name. This is especially important if you have a very simple domain name thats highly sought after. Typically, youll receive your first reminder to renew your domain about a month before it expires. If you still dont renew your domain name after receiving this message, youll get another reminder about a week before your domain expires.

So, what happens if you forget to renew your domain name before it expires? As long as the domain name hasnt been registered by somebody else, you can reactivate your domain name after the expiration date. Keep in mind that some domains are in much higher demand than others, and there are even some bots out there that automatically register high-profile domains when they become available.

Why Change Domain Names

There are many reasons for wanting to change, perhaps you dont like your domain name, or maybe youve had feedback that your customers dont like it.

So, what happens if a name just isnt working for you anymore?

There are benefits of domain name changing. You might be able to get your hands on a shorter and more memorable domain name one thats marketable, modern, and appeals to your customers.

Lets take a closer look at four reasons you might want to switch names.

Reason 1. You want to rebrand

Maybe your company was bought and you need to undertake a domain name change, or a brand agency recently swept you off your feet, resulting in a company name change, and therefore a pressing need to change your domain name?

Perhaps you own a company that sold blue dog collars and registered for the name billsbluecollars.co. After a short while, you start to realize that red collars are more popular. You no longer want that .co domain, you want a .com, and to revamp your domain name entirely.

Its perfectly understandable that if a complete overhaul and fresh design are happening, you might need a new domain to match.

Reason 2. Youre relocating

Imagine youre an actor. An exciting move from a small US town to Toronto in Canada might mean that your acting portfolio website needs to change from a .us to a .cato reflect your availability.

Reason 3. Your business has changed

Reason 4. Your dream domain name is up for grabs

When Do You Need To Buy A Domain Name

How to Buy a Domain Name | Domain Name Registration for Small Business [2021]

According to Verisign, there were over 367 million domain registrations close to the second quarter of 2021, a 0.7% decrease from last year.

While domain name buying is slowing down, this shouldnt placate you. Its much harder to buy a domain from its owner than register it yourself. So, you should buy your desired domain name as soon as you know it, as you dont want someone else to take it.

If you have an idea for your domain, you are already on the right path to choosing a domain name.

When buying your domain name, consider purchasing any other names you want. That includes domains for your:

  • Customer support program
  • Customer loyalty program

If you want to use a domain in the future but not immediately, you can install a coming soon page on your domain with a WordPress extension like SeedProd. You can also park your domain. Domain parking is widespread, as ICANN estimates 52.95% of domains are currently parked.

Domain Registrar Vs Web Host

Theres a lot of info out there about this, much of it convoluted and confusing mostly because most registrars provide web hosting services, and most web hosts also register domain names. And you dont have to get your domain from your web host . The hardest part is keeping everything straight.

So keep this in mind

A domain name is an address on the World Wide Web. And a website is like the building at that address. You can usually get both in the same place, but not always.

How To Search For Domains At Godaddy

The worlds biggest registrar, GoDaddy has searching for domains down to a science. GoDaddy has an easy to use domain name search tool for mobile and desktop users, as well as a few other options for securing just the right domain name.

Simply follow these steps to register a domain name with GoDaddy:

1. Visit GoDaddy.com

Open up your preferred browser and go to GoDaddy.com. Once the home page loads, youll see a search bar where you can begin your domain search.

2. Enter your domain in the search bar

Enter your preferred domain name, and click Search. At this point, one of two things will happen:

If your domain name is available, great! Youll be presented with the opportunity to add it to the cart.

If your domain name isnt available, youll be prompted to search for a new domain name or select a different variation.

The good news? Even if your domain name is already taken, GoDaddys suggestion tool will list new ideas, with different extensions or variations, that you can review.

If you like one of the options, great! If not, enter a few of your other domain options into the search bar until you land on one thats available.

Pro tip: Dont shy away from different domain extensions. While .com is still one of the most widely registered domain endings, the availability of hundreds of new domain extensions gives you the opportunity to register a domain that perfectly represents who you are and what you do.

Find Your Domain Name On Your Chosen Domain Registrar Website

Buy The Domain Name You Want

Weve already covered choosing your domain registrar. Once you do, look up your chosen domain name to see if its already taken. If it is, the domain registrar will present alternatives either for the domain itself or for the TLD.

It may offer choices such as .net, .org, and .info. Generally, we recommend sticking with a .com TLD because its highly recognizable.

What Happens To An Expired Domain Name

Expired domains usually go through 4 stages:

1. Expired Status & Grace Period

Domains that arent renewed first go into expired status. The domain registrar will pause all services but the owner has time to renew it.

This period can vary between 10-45 days.

During this period, the owner simply needs to pay the renewal fee to keep the domain.

If you want to find out the expiry date of a domain name, you can check the WHOIS database. Simply type in the name and youll see the domain details including the expiry date.

2. Domain Redemption Period

If the domain owner fails to renew the domain name during the grace period, it passes into the redemption zone.

The domain registration is canceled but its inaccessible to the public market. So no one will be able to register it.

If the domain owner chooses to renew the domain during this period, theyll have to pay a redemption fee + renewal fee to get back the domain name. For instance, Bluehost charges $70 redemption fee + the normal renewal fee.

3. Domain Auction or Public Market

Once the redemption period expires, the domain is now free to be auctioned to the highest bidder.

It could also just be released for registration on the public market.

These periods could vary so much that its hard to figure out when exactly youll be able to register the domain.

4. Backorders

You can think of a backorder like pre-ordering a product before its launched. So before the domain goes back on the public market, you can place a backorder.

A Note On Social Handles

In a perfect world, youd pick a domain name whose social handles are also available. This isnt a perfect world. My take on this is that its hard enough to get a good domain name. Dont make it even harder or nearly impossible by also adding this criteria.

When it comes to picking up the social handles, youll have options. You can get creative, or even potentially acquire the handles from the current owners.

Its a good idea to consider social handles when making your final decision, but dont let that stop you from picking the right name.

Find Out Who Owns The Domain

There are two ways to complete this step:

  • Figure it out on your own
  • Hire a domain broker to do it for you

Doing it on your own can be tricky. You could run a quick WHOIS lookup, but most people wont have their personal information listed. Using Google to your advantage can be helpful. Some domains might be linked to another website or social media profile. You could potentially find the owner that way.

Personally, Id recommend using a broker. Sedo is one of my favorite domain marketplaces and brokerage sites.

Brokers can almost always find out who owns the domain because they have such a massive network. Theyll determine if the domain is actually for sale and how much the seller is asking for. Your broker can even handle the negotiations on your behalf.

The downside of using a broker is that youll have to pay a brokerage fee. But in most cases, youll only have to pay if the sale actually goes through.

Other great places to find a premium domain online include:

If a domain is for sale, youll be able to get the ball rolling with Sedo or one of the other options listed above.
