What Are The Different Types Of Ssl Certificates

There are three types of SSL certificates, GoDaddy offers them all. Each have with varying levels of security. Understanding what kind of SSL certificate is important when doing anything involving personal user data.

    • Domain validated SSL certificate. DV certificates verify the owner of the site. The Certificate Authority sends an email to the websites registered email address to verify its identity. No detailed information about the company is required, and the DV Certificate is the easiest to obtain and thus have a lowest level of trust.
    • Organizationally validated SSL certificate. The Certificate Authority is required to validate the organization, physical location address and the websites domain name. The process takes about 2-3 days. OV certificates have a moderate level of trust, and are fine for public-facing websites with lower-level transactions.
    • Extended validation SSL certificate. This is the SSL certificate with the highest level of security and is optimum for sites that deal with sensitive information. Before issuing an EV SSL certificate, the Certificate Authority thoroughly reviews the applicant The review process entails examination of corporate documents, confirmation of identity, and verifies relevant information through a third-party database.

The Best Ssl Certificates For Subdomains Detail Research Guide

If you are reading this article, we can assume that you already have a basic understanding of subdomains. However, if the technical details related to subdomains are not thoroughly clear when you buy an SSL certificate, even a small mistake becomes irreversible and can waste your money. So, lets cover all the fundamentals regarding the subdomains first.

    What are subdomains?

A subdomain is a subdivision of the parent domain under the Domain Name System hierarchy. It is also known as a child domain. A few examples will make it clear:

In the Web address images.mydomain.com, the suffix .com is the first-level domain or TLD , mydomain.com is the second-level domain and images.mydomain.com is the third-level domain, i.e. a subdomain.

Subdomains come in multiple levels, too. In the above example, the third level domain images.mydomain.com is the first level subdomain of the root domain mydomain.com.

    • xyz.com=main domain/primary domain/root domain
    • *.xyz.com=first level subdomain, where * can be any word, letter or digit
    • For example, blog.xyz.com, login.xyz.com, mail.xyz.com, etc.

This limitation seems to be on different types of web hosting Economy & Deluxe Web Hosting Linux. It seems to appear for users in different countries too.

The only explanation for this I found was this Godaddy Forum post. This tells that if you have Classic or web hosting that was bought some years ago, they might not have a way to install an external SSL certificate.

A workaround would be to use a CDN like Cloudflare which comes with it. Its free until a certain limit of traffic, so if you have a low traffic site this might work for you.

Cloudflare is CDN, not hosting. Thus, you would still stay on GoDaddy. But Cloudflare would act as a layer in front of your hosting. Here is a video of how to install Cloudflare on WordPress.

Error Code: Forbidden You Dont Have Permission To Access / On This Server Server Unable To Read Htaccess File Denying Access To Be Safe

After some struggles, Shaun was able to resolve this issue and he posted his solution in the comments below. Thanks Shaun!

    Description of Problem:

I had no issues until I got to the redirect phase from http to . Prior to creating and modifying the .htaccess file, I checked my site and could access it through the insecure http:// and the secure https:// without issue.

So, I created the .htaccess file and copied and pasted the suggested code above:

    RewriteEngine On RewriteRule ^$ %

The result was an error code:

Forbidden You dont have permission to access / on this server. Server unable to read htaccess file, denying access to be safe

Before re-installing my site, I deleted the file to a blank one, played with other codes, contacted GoDaddy and the error code would not go away.

The solution on re-install was the following code (where replace domain is your domain name:

    RewriteEngine On RewriteCond % ^replacedomain\.com RewriteCond % 80

It worked. I dont know why at all. But, hoping the knowledge helps others.
