Do I Need A Com Domain

Why Go With A Gtld

How to Register Domain with Google Domains

Beyond being the address for your blogs or business home on the web, your domain name helps market your business and communicates with your readers, target audience, or customers.

I think that theres a lot of opportunity in the gTLD space, says Scott. You have the opportunity to do something interesting like .attorney or .florist something that sends a very strong signal of who you are and what you do and what your business is about before the person even comes to your website.

Why Should I Own One

As I learned first-hand, having a custom domain gives you an instant credibility boost. It doesnt matter whether youre using a personal site to help you land a job, increase your visibility in your field or industry, find freelance gigs, showcase your work, or promote your brand: The more credibility you have, the better.

Plus, custom domains are usually far easier to remember than generic ones. Imagine you told someone you met at a networking event to check out your site, janedoeportfolio.squarespace.com. Hell probably forget the link by the time he gets in front of his laptop. However, janedoe.bio will be a cinch to remember. These names also look much more sleek when you put them on business cards, in the header of your resume, or anywhere else you might be directing people to learn more about you.

A domain that incorporates your name also helps others find you in search results. When someone enters your first and last name into Google, theyre much more likely to see your website if its domain matches their search. When you search Aja Frost, for example, my site is the first thing that comes up:

This gives you the chance to really own the conversation around your personal brand, making sure people see what you want them to see first.

Help People Find You On The Internet

Just as a house has a street address, websites have domain names that help people find them online. I hope you understand how a domain name can help you look more professional, and get new customers for your company. Having one of your own is no longer a choice, but a necessity. In fact, you are losing customers if your competitors have an online presence but you do not. Grab your online space now!

Beware Of Search Engine Registration Scams

You may receive emails claiming that the visibility of your domain names on search engines is at risk and that you should pay to secure your website ranking through a domain search engine registration service.

These alarming notices are essentially scams that take advantage of unsuspecting people using familiar-sounding terminology.

The most luring aspect of these email alerts is that they look sincere and express urgency. Moreover, the emails are worded to sound official with a call to immediate action. They are often personalised with your name and contact details and appear formal.

In reality, these scammers hunt registrant details from public Whois records. For this reason, you will often receive an influx of such emails after registering or updating the records of a domain.

Note: Since the implementation of GDPR on 25 May 2018, Whois records are no longer publicly visible, which should drastically reduce this type of spam.

Dont Buy A Domain If You Cant Support It

Suppose you own several dozen domain namesare you actually going to be able to keep all those sites updated, much less fresh, relevant, and promoted? Even most full-time bloggers cannot keep up with more than 4 without a team and those are typically people who really know what they are doing.

And what kind of budget are you looking at when buying these domain names?

20 mediocre sites with chronic under-investment will never go anywhere and will never compare to 1 website done well.

If you can and you plan on supporting the new site buy the domainotherwise wait for another day. There will always be another domain name.

What Is A Website Domain

Every computer on the internet has an address. This address is called the Internet Protocol or IP address. It is a long series of numbers and hard for humans to remember. Therefore, domain names were created.

If you think you havent seen a domain name, you are wrong. Trust me, you know them quite well. You use the address bar of the browser to search for a website or a company. Here you enter a website address like IndiaTimes.com or Flipkart.com. These website addresses are nothing but the domain names for these websites.

You can quickly identify a domain name in email and web addresses. It is the name that comes after @ in an email address and after www. in a web address or URL.

For example, in the email address sales@ShopClues.com, ShopClues.com is the domain name. Similarly, in the web address https://www.Zomato.com, Zomato.com is the domain name.

That answers the question, what is a website domain name? Let us now explore what it is not. This will help clear up some common confusions.

Make Sure Your Domains Are Registry Locked

Most organisations have a change control process to prevent unauthorised changes being made to domains. Despite this, changes can still be made by:

  • current or former staff in an organisation with the right credentials

  • anything that compromises your registrars service

Every public sector organisation can sign up to the free Registry Lock service provided by the Central Digital and Data Office . This will protect .gov.uk domains from unauthorised changes to critical data. The sign-up process takes 5 minutes.

A domain name administrator must sign up to the service. Registrars or suppliers cannot sign up to Registry Lock service on an organisations behalf.

The Registry Lock service will:

  • prevent unauthorised changes being made to .gov.uk domain records and contact details in the .gov.uk registry

  • notify any relevant teams when changes to these records are made

The service will check any changes to the .gov.uk zone file for your domain as well as your contact details held at the registry. The zone file usually contains your name server records but can occasionally include other records as well. It will not prevent changes to individual DNS records like A, MX and TXT held with your DNS provider.Registry Lock will not affect your day-to-day Domain Name Service management and only works for .gov.uk domains. For other domains you should check with your registrar.

You should also check if your registrar or supplier uses MFA when they access the registry service.

What Does It Cost To Purchase A Domain Name

Domain names can range from free though always with an asterisk related to later costs to tens of dollars to millions of dollars. There are many factors that will determine how much it costs to register a domain name, including the following:

  • What is the TLD? The cost of new registrations and renewals are is regulated by ICANN and the respective domain name registries that set the prices . Registrars will have to pay that cost whenever a domain name is registered through them, which is why prices and special offers may differ from one registrar to another. *.com, *.net and the other popular TLDs are usually less than $40 per year, while some newer TLDs like *.ceo cost hundreds and *.rich cost thousands.
  • Is this a new registration or does someone else already own it? As previously mentioned, new registration costs depend on those domain name registries like ICANN and your registrar. However, if someone else already has your preferred domain names, you may have to pay them for it.Note: if someone else owns a domain name that violates registered trademarks you own, you have a clearer path to securing it. At that point, it becomes a legal matter. We recommend referring to ICANNs Uniform Domain-Name Dispute-Resolution Policy for what options are available to you.

Why We Recommend A Com Extension

A .com domain name is the most common extension and still generally carries more significant value for companies.

Thats because most of your customers are going to assume your website is .com. That is unless the extension is part of your trademarked business name .

The big question is: does a .com extension have any direct impact on your search rankings?

While it seems that .coms are Googles preferred extension, its probably not the case.

Googles only reason to prioritize one extension over the other is that Internet users default to .com domains. People expect sites to use the extension many associate real businesses with .coms, and Google tends to play on user assumptions.

In fact, more than 50 percent of all websites on the web use the .com extension.

So one could say that a .com extension helps your rankings because users are more likely to click on abcd.com than abcd.anythingelse. Additionally, .coms are easier to remember, and a person is more likely to type in the wrong URL with other extensions.

    Increase Professionalism With A Domain

An often-overlooked benefit to registering a business domain is the ability to create and use domain-specific email addresses. Many small business owners still use free email services like Gmail or Yahoo to communicate with their customers.

Consumers are becoming more tech-savvy, and they expect the businesses they use to have a certain level of professionalism. In a highly competitive market, small differences like having a business email can be the factor that tips the scale in your favor.

Prevent Other Competitors To Get The Domain You Want

There are cases that competitors have similar names or they want to use some catchy keywords in their domain. If you move fast you can get the good domain before them and have an advantage in the online world that can be translated to real value.

You will also protect your brand name better if you own a domain with your companys name or you will be associated with a keyword-rich domain that is directly connected with your industry.

What If The Com Address Is Already Taken

You may be researching this question because the .com for the domain you want is already taken. If the domain is in active use, you probably wont be able to buy it. So, what do you do?

The best option is often to choose a different domain. And by this I mean choose a completely different domain name instead of using the same name with a different TLD. There are two reasons for this:

  • Companies often trademark their names. If you use the same name as an existing company, you risk running into legal trouble with the original company. The name doesnt need to be trademarked either companies can still take you to court via common law. The bigger the company, the more likely you are to face this problem.
  • Many users, if they cant remember your TLD, will automatically search for the name of your company with .com attached. If this domain belongs to another company, these people will end up on the wrong site. If youre lucky, they will then go to Google to look for your business. However, these people may assume youve gone out of business and not go looking for you at all. This could result in a large amount of lost business.
  • To create a different domain name with a similar feel, consider adding a word, subtracting a word, or changing the spelling of a specific word in your domain. There are endless ways to create a unique domain, including the use of domain name generators.

Searching For Your Website Domain Name

Those who have an operational company with a brand name have different options from those who are just starting up.

In the first scenario, you will likely want to buy the .com or .in version of your business name. For example, if you have a real estate company with the name Goel Realtors, you would want to buy the domain name GoelRealtor.com or GoelRealtor.in, or both.

Check the availability of your domain name now

On the other hand, if you are just starting up and have not yet named your business, you have all the freedom to search domain names that suit you best. Type the desired domain name in the search box of GoDaddy. GoDaddy not only tells you whether that domain name is available or not, but it also suggests alternative options. Continue searching until you find an available domain that fits, then use that for your business name.

    A Brief History Of Top

There are over 1,000 TLDs available and new ones are coming out all the time.

Top Level Domains are the suffixes at the end of every URL. .com is the most well-known TLD, but its hardly the only one. In fact, there are over 1,000 TLD options available. Not all of them are available to the public, but thats still a lot of options.

The name .com comes from the word commercial and the first domain name to use it was symbiolics.com, in 1985. Before TLDs, if you wanted to reach a website, you needed to connect to it through its IP address. Each server you connect to still has its own IP address you can reach, but that proved too unwieldy for everyday use. To tackle that problem, the Domain Name System launched in 1985.

Its thanks to the DNS you can connect to your favorite websites using simple-to-remember names. More importantly, keeping a record of registered domains enables us to avoid duplicates. TLDs are an integral part of this system and back when they launched, options were more limited. Aside from .com, 1985 also saw the launch of multiple other TLDs, including staples such as .org, .edu, and .net. Over thirty years later, all those TLDs are still common the web.
