Pointing A Domain To A Host

Lets say you have just moved your site to another hosting provider. However, your domain name stayed with the old hosting company, and it does not direct visitors to your website.

This problem happens because your domain is not connected to the new web host. You have several options on how to solve this issue, but in practice, we only recommend using one method.

You can transfer the domain to the new hosting provider. However, domain transfer usually includes additional charges as the domain will be renewed for another year. The domain renewal price depends on the TLD you are using. For .com it is $13.99/year.

The second option is to update the domains DNS A record with your new IP address. Nevertheless, since A records are designed to point to static IP addresses, its advisable not to use this method. If the IP changes, your website will stop working until you update the record.

The last method is changing the domains nameservers. This is the most recommended option as you can transfer your domains DNS control to the new hosting provider without changing your registrar.

Be Careful If Godaddy Is Providing You With Free Dns Service

If youre signing up for our hosting service, and GoDaddy is currently providing you with hosting service, the transfer will go smoothly. GoDaddy will not disable their hosting and DNS service when you transfer the domain name, allowing a smooth overlap.

Theres also no problem if your GoDaddy domain name uses DNS nameservers that point outside of GoDaddy.

However, theres one rare situation that can lead to problems. If youre currently using GoDaddys DNS service but youre not paying GoDaddy to host your website or email, they will stop providing the DNS service as soon as you transfer the domain name.

If youre in this situation, you can avoid downtime by updating the DNS nameservers at GoDaddy before you approve the transfer of the domain name itself:

  • Sign up with us to transfer the domain name, but dont approve the domain name transfer yet.
  • When youre ready to point your site at our servers, go to the GoDaddy DNS nameserver management screen, choose custom nameservers, and replace the GoDaddy nameservers with our nameservers.
  • Wait 48 hours so that the change propagates across the entire Internet, meaning that every computer on the Internet knows only about the new nameservers. During this period, some DNS requests may still reach the old GoDaddy servers, but those requests will still be handled as long as you havenât yet transferred the domain name.

For example, if youre moving your domain to HostGator, your nameservers might be:

Will My Website Go Down During A Domain Name Transfer

    Nope!

When you transfer a domain name from one registrar to another, thats literally all youre doing. Youre not moving your email or hosting. During the domain transfer process, your nameservers dont change theyll stay pointed to the same pre-transfer nameservers.

Now, its another story if youre changing your hosting provider along with your domain registrar. If you decide to change your website host, follow these steps to avoid site downtime:

    • Import your DNS records to your new hosting provider
    • Double-check to make sure the DNS information is correct.
    • Change the nameservers at the originating registrar.
    • You may have to wait for propagation it could take 24-48 hours.

Another scenario to consider is if youre using the default nameservers of your current registrar. Many registrars offer access to free nameservers so long as your domain remains registered with them. If you decide to transfer your domain, you could lose access to those nameservers.

If youre unsure whether youre using default nameservers, ask your registrar BEFORE you transfer your domain. We recommend keeping your domain pointed to your hosting providers nameservers.
