How Much Does Changing Your Domain Name Hurt Your Shopify Seo
Last week a JSON-LD for SEO customer replied to my article about the impacts of changing your Shopify domain with a few questions.
We currently have the domain example.com as our primary domain but I really would like to change it to example.net still have example.com as a secondary domain.
How bad is that. Shopify tells me no problem. My tech guy is telling me dont do it.
So there are multiple sides to this.
Shopify is correct in that changing your domain is no problem. You just change it in their backend and point the new domain to Shopify.
Easy right?
Except that will wipe out your SEO. Whoops!
I have an SEO consultant friend who has setup and done domain moves like this. Weve talked about this topic a lot.
He says even if you do everything correctly youre still looking at a minimum of 6 months of lower/no organic traffic while Google refreshes things. Maybe even a year before your back to where you are now.
Sometimes domain moves are good for brand or company reasons but it will always have a major impact on SEO.
Id agree more with your tech guy.
You absolutely can switch domains but Id recommend
One thing that is useful is to register the new domain and put a simple HTML landing page on it with a link to your main store.

Is My Shopify Store Name Important
When you sign up to Shopify youâre asked to choose a store name when creating an account. The store name you choose is used to dynamically create your Shopify sub-domain in the format https://yourstorename.myshopify.com. This sub-domain is intended to be used for internal purposes like logging into your Shopify account and setting up and managing your online store.
You may keep this sub-domain as the public facing URL for your online store but we donât recommend it. We advise you to use your own custom domain to build credibility and trust, one that reflects your brand and is memorable.
However, if you decide to ignore our advice and keep your myshopify sub-domain as your customer facing URL, you can change your store name but you wonât be allowed to change your myshopify sub-domain. Instead, youâll need to create a new Shopify store.
If you use or are planning to use your own custom domain you can change your Shopify store name for cosmetic reasons but it wonât affect either your custom domain or myshopify sub-domain.

What Do Do With Your Old Domain Name
Now that you have a new domain in place, you may also now be wondering what to do with your old and no longer required domain.
- If it was a .myshopify.com URL there is nothing you need to do.
- If it was a domain you purchased from Shopify, then you can let it expire. Just make sure it is not set to automatically renew
- If the domain is hosted at an external provider, you can reassign the domain to another website, let it sit or finally you can sell it.
- There are plenty of online marketplaces like Flippa, whereby you can sell your unwanted domain. In some cases, depending on the domain and how unique and in demand it will be, you can fetch a high price.
Getting Shopify Out Of Your Url
If youve just finished signing up to Shopify, then youll notice that your store has a Shopify URL. The store name you used while signing up will be tied to this URL, for instance: allfor10bucks.myshopify.com.
Now, you can work with that URL. You can sell your items and manage your store itll work just like it should. The problem here is that it doesnt really look professional, and itll make branding nearly impossible.
Thats why you want to use custom domains for your store, and these need to be registered with providers. This domain is what youll set as the primary domain its what your customers will see on their browsers address bar when visiting your store.
Managing your domains and assigning this primary option is just a couple of clicks. Go to Domains under your Online Store section on your admin dashboard.
